  • K NISHIKORI* 2-3 D FERRER
Ferrer tries a drop shot but his plan goes awry when he puts the attempted pass long. 30-30. The Spaniard then delivers his second ace but we go to deuce when he nets a backhand after a good return. Nishkori leathers a forehand into the corner, which Ferrer puts long, but Nishikori puts a backhand into the net on break point. Two more errors follow and Ferrer hangs on.

  • We weren't expecting to see this fellow today!

  • K NISHIKORI 3-3 D FERRER*
Ferrer earns a break point this time but puts a backhand long as Nishikori holds his nerve. The Japanese player then tamely finds the net but saves another break point with an audacious crosscourt drop shot, which skims the net cord. He scores again with a stretching backhand volley and then claims the game with a beautiful forehand winner. Great match so far, the crowd are loving it!
    11/13/2014 2:49:39 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-3 D FERRER
More good tennis from Nishikori but he then misses on a pair of returns and Ferrer goes up 40-30. The Spaniard nets a backhand however and Nishikori reaches break point with a brilliant backhand volley, on the stretch. Another superb forehand winner follows and Nishikori has broken through![break]
    11/13/2014 2:54:26 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-4 D FERRER*
Ferrer hits back! Nishikori is going for the lines here but he starts this game with a couple of errors, before sending a fine backhand flying into open court. Ferrer then sends a return long but finds himself at break point when Nishikori misses with a forehand, and converts with a fine forehand of his own, which Nishikori can only return into the net at the end of another exciting rally.
    11/13/2014 3:00:52 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-5 D FERRER
Ferrer looking good now. Aided by a fine winner and a wild Nishikori forehand, he holds to love and is back in front. Good news for Murray fans because a Nishikori win, especially in straight sets, would not help the Brit's cause.

    11/13/2014 3:02:51 PM
  • Kei has a fight on his hands here!

    11/13/2014 3:04:02 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 D FERRER*
Good leave from Ferrer and Nishikori is under pressure on serve again at 15-30. He double-faults and it is two set points ... and Nishikori then puts an easy smash into the net! Amazing. Ferrer wins three games in a row to take the set![set]
    11/13/2014 3:07:44 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 D FERRER*
Hats off to Ferrer, who is playing in this match at short notice, following Raonic's withdrawal and has now won the first set. Good news for Andy Murray, who is out whatever if he loses to Federer tonight, but will go through with a win if Ferrer triumphs here. It's all happening!
    11/13/2014 3:09:39 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-6 1-0 D FERRER
Nishikori starts set two like a man on a mission and a brilliant backhand pass helps him on his way to a 0-40 lead. Ferrer saves break point one with a good forehand and number two goes begging when a Nishikori lob drifts long but a Ferrer forehand then goes out and Nishikori breaks! Ferrer winning the first set means Roger Federer is definitely through to the semis.[break]

  • 11/13/2014 3:13:54 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 2-0 D FERRER*
Nishikori firmly in charge now and he holds to love thanks to some penetrating forehands. First three-setter of the week looming?
    11/13/2014 3:15:22 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-6 2-1 D FERRER
Ferrer not planning to lie down in this set and he manages a hold to love of his own when Nishikori puts an attempted backhand winner too long.
    11/13/2014 3:17:55 PM
  • David Ferrer is enjoying himself out here!

    11/13/2014 3:20:14 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 3-1 D FERRER*
Fantastic backhand pass from Ferrer, although he graciously apologises as it clipped the net cord. Nishikori is unperturbed and holds serve when a Ferrer return goes long.
    11/13/2014 3:22:19 PM
  • RAONIC PULLS OUT
    11/13/2014 3:23:07 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-6 3-2 D FERRER
Two really well-played rallies from Nishikori and he gets back to 30-30 but then puts a return wide. However, a delicious whipped forehand gets him to deuce, only for Ferrer to score with a booming serve out wide, and the Spainard stays very much in the set when a Nishikori lob is just too long.
    11/13/2014 3:27:17 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 4-2 D FERRER*
Big serve there from Nishikori and Ferrer does well to even get a racket on it. That's another hold for Nishikori, who will now be keen to bag a double-break.
    11/13/2014 3:30:40 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-6 4-3 D FERRER
Ferrer sticks a backhand wide to drop 15-30 behind but Nishikori fails to take his chance and looks glumly at the floor after a forehand just misses. He then nets a return and puts another one wide as Ferrer stays on his tail in this crucial second set.
    11/13/2014 3:34:00 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 5-3 D FERRER*
Ferrer frustrated as a backhand fails to make it over the net and he takes it out on a running forehand, which sizzles past Nishikori. A return then finds the net though and Nishikori quickly moves within a game of levelling the match.
    11/13/2014 3:38:13 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-6 5-4 D FERRER
Nice lunging backhand volley from Ferrer to make it 40-15 and he wraps it up on the next point, forcing Nishikori to serve out the set. He faltered at the end of set one, will it be a different story this time?
    11/13/2014 3:40:31 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 6-4 D FERRER*
A powerful wide serve gets Nishikori off to the start he wanted but he then miscues a forehand. 15-15. A Ferrer return slides long and Nishikori then comes up trumps with a drop shot followed by lob combo. Set point ... and a trademark double-handed backhand winner down the line seals it. Great stuff Nishikori - we finally have a match which is going the distance![set]
    11/13/2014 3:44:34 PM
  • Nishikori has levelled the match!

  • SELFIE-TIME!

    11/13/2014 3:46:21 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-6 6-4 1-0 D FERRER
Here we go then ... and Nishikori wins a great point to start the final set. He has a superb record in deciding sets this year and has early break points when Ferrer nets after a punishing exchange. Ferrer then puts a backhand long and Nishikori has seized the advantage![break]
    11/13/2014 3:52:41 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 6-4 2-0 D FERRER*
Close but no cigar for Ferrer as an attempted forehand winner just misses. Nishikori is a bit wild on the forehand on the next point and it is 40-30 but he wins the game when Ferrer nets a backhand. Victory would give Nishikori a great chance of reaching the semis and he is on course!
    11/13/2014 3:55:52 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-6 6-4 3-0 D FERRER
Ferrer seems to be crumbling and a double-fault makes it 0-30. He is not happy, to say the least, and Nishikori sets up two more break points with a nice forehand winner. His next shot is called in but surely it was wide and Ferrer challenges correctly, only to lose serve again when Nishikori reaches into his bag of tricks and pulls out a wonderful cross-court backhand winner. Sweet![break]
    11/13/2014 4:00:40 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 6-4 4-0 D FERRER*
Wham-bam-thank you forehand winner down the line says Nishikori, who is rampant. He holds to love and Ferrer's resistance appears to have been broken.
    11/13/2014 4:02:50 PM
  • K NISHIKORI* 4-6 6-4 4-1 D FERRER
Nishikori has it on a bit of string and Ferrer is rooted to the spot as a forehand return winner whizzes past. The Spaniard, brave as ever, battles back though, and it is 40-30 when Nishikori goes long. A net-cord takes a Ferrer forehand out but he is undeterred and wins the next two points to open his account for the set. The crowd roar their approval.
    11/13/2014 4:07:17 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 6-4 5-1 D FERRER*
Nishikori throws in his fifth double fault of the match and then nets a pair of forehands. 15-40. A solid approach shot and smash save one break point and Ferrer then nets a forehand when he had a chance to power home a winner. Cruel! A big Nishikori serve saves a third break point and then he saves a fourth with an athletic volley at the net. Great stuff! Break point five is squandered by an off-target Ferrer return and Nishikori then takes the game with a drop shot of sheer genius. What a game! Surely it's all over now!
    11/13/2014 4:14:45 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 6-4 5-1 D FERRER*
Ferrer does not know when he is beaten and chunters at himself after an error. He then puts a forehand wide though and Nishikori sets up match point with a fine forehand ...
    11/13/2014 4:17:05 PM
  • It's all over, Nishikori prevails![game-set-match]
    11/13/2014 4:17:34 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 6-4 6-1 D FERRER
A Ferrer shot floats long and he is beaten after a game effort. Great display from Nishikori, who now has to wait and see whether he has done enough to reach the semis. He wins in four minutes short of two hours.

  • 11/13/2014 4:19:51 PM
  • K NISHIKORI 4-6 6-4 6-1 D FERRER
Reserve or no reserve, that was the best match of the week so far in terms of overall quality. Great credit to Ferrer for playing so well after being called into duty at short notice but he did not have the attacking armoury of Nishikori.

The fourth seed was on top for most of the match and only ceded the first set when he lost his way somewhat, having been a break up. He finishes the group stage with two wins from three matches and it will take an inspired Murray display tonight to deny him a semi-final place.

  • GREAT WAY TO SPEND A THURSDAY AFTERNOON!

    11/13/2014 4:30:07 PM
  • HOW ABOUT STAT?
Nishikori was the aggressor in that one and he finished with a sterling tally of 41 winners. OK, there were 37 unforced errors too, but that is a ratio far better than most have managed this week so far. Ferrer had 14 winners and 19 unforced errors.

Nishikori led the ace count 4-2 but also the double-fault count 6-3.

  • QUALIFICATION SCENARIOS:
So, Roger Federer is through to the semis and Andy Murray has to win in straight sets tonight to join him ... and he is playing Federer! Tall order, can't wait to see how he gets on! Kei Nishikori goes through if Murray loses or wins in three.
    11/13/2014 4:38:38 PM
  • POST-MATCH REACTION FROM FERRER:
We played at a good level, Kei is very good at the moment. He is very confident and, in the third set, I was a little bit tired. He has improved his serve and his fitness. He has a good future and could be in the top 10 for many years to come.

    11/13/2014 5:11:03 PM
  • FERRER ON PLAYING AS A RESERVE:
It was different. Last week I was on holiday but I practiced for four days after arriving on Sunday. I was one out of qualifying to play here and it was good that I got to play a match in London. It would have been perfect if I had won. Of course, my goal is to play here again next year.

  • KEEP IT HERE!
Kei Nishikori press conference not coming up for a while so I'm going to take 20. Stay with us though, we have Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin v Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in doubles from six plus plenty of build-up as we get ready for Roger Federer v Andy Murray. Don't really have to sell that one, do I?!

  • NISHIKORI ON HIS MATCH AGAINST FERRER:
It's never easy against David because he is very consistent from the baseline. From the second set, I was more aggressive. I took some risks, was using forehands a little more, and served well. The final set was almost perfect. I tried to step in a little more and I think I won almost every point when I came to the net.

  • WILL NISHIJKORI WATCH THE MATCH TONIGHT:
I don't think so. I'm just going to wait for the result because I want to eat a good dinner today and it's going to be at the same time! I think I will just see the result.
