Australia v England - Fifth Test

Australia v England - Fifth Test

  • Nothing a Captain can do when bowlers badly..... #justsaying
  • Over 41 - Australia 151/5 (Smith 23, Haddin 38)
Haddin on the charge here after Smith gets him back on strike with a quick single. Rankin attacks him with the short stuff and gets smacked over mid-on for four and whacked to deep square-leg for a single. Smith adds another quick single. You can set your watch by Australia's first-innings batting in this series. Top-order nonsense, Haddin-inspired recovery.

  • "@MKA91 : @BumbleCricket spinner spinner spinner" No! Just bowl properly
  • Over 42 - Australia 155/5 (Smith 27, Haddin 38)
Smith gets a whack on the finger from a ball that bounces dramatically from a good length. Rattled, he's camped on the back foot and has an ugly swipe at a full delivery outside the off stump. Somehow, and Smith himself may not quite be able to tell you how, the ball races off the middle of the bat through point for four.
    1/3/2014 3:29:16 AM
  • With leg-spinner Borthwick on for his first bowl. Bumble says...:
[davidlloyd] He'll be very excited to get into the attack but he's coming on during the first innings on a green pitch when the quick bowlers have just had a really poor spell.

    1/3/2014 3:30:13 AM
  • Over 43 - Australia 160/5 (Smith 31, Haddin 39)
Here it is. A man is bowling legspin in a Test match for England. Borthwick's first over is a mixed bag. A short ball that Haddin cuts away for one. A full-toss that Smith hits straight back to the bowler. A long-hop that he plays carefully to mid-on in the manner of a man who's bowled plenty of similarly rubbish deliveries and seen them take wickets. A good ball is in there to keep everyone interested before a full-toss to end the over that Smith flips past mid-on for four.
    1/3/2014 3:33:45 AM
  • Rankin leaves the field one ball into his ninth over. Looks like a hamstring injury. Big blow #ashes
  • Over 44 - Australia 163/5 (Smith 31, Haddin 42)
Couple of gentle looseners from Broad. Haddin gives himself room before steering the ball past gully for two and adds a quick single next ball. Big test for Cook's captaincy if he has to get through the rest of the day - possibly even the match - with just his three seamers and a rookie legspinner.
    1/3/2014 3:39:41 AM
  • [benedictbermange] Since 1970, England leg-spinners have taken just 24 wickets. Two of those were claimed by our very own Michael Atherton

    1/3/2014 3:41:48 AM
  • Over 45 - Australia 170/5 (Smith 35, Haddin 45)
They're going after the legspinner, to no-one's great surprise. Haddin dabs a delicate late cut past slip for three before Smith thumps a drive down the ground for four.
    1/3/2014 3:43:04 AM
  • Over 46 - Australia 170/5 (Smith 35, Haddin 45)
Hard to escape the notion that England have massively let Australia off the hook in helpful bowling conditions here. Broad sends balls jagging past Haddin's outside and inside edges in a fine maiden over.
    1/3/2014 3:47:17 AM
  • Over 47 - Australia 179/5 (Smith 40, Haddin 49)
This is brutal. Smith hammers a full-toss through the covers for four and looks set to add another boundary with a hammer of a straight drive that Broad does well to cut off at mid-on. Haddin smacks the last ball of the over past mid-off for four more.
    1/3/2014 3:50:21 AM
  • Over 48 - Australia 181/5 (Smith 40, Haddin 49)
Confirmation from the ECB that Rankin has an injury to his left hamstring. Injury currently being assessed. Maiden over from Broad, although Australia get two byes as Bairstow is deceived by some movement after the ball passes the bat.
    1/3/2014 3:54:36 AM
  • 50! Haddin is tormenting England once again. He moves along to 50* following on from series scores of: 94, 53, 118, 55, 5, 65 #ashes #stayup
  • [nasserhussain] Haddin is in one day mode. He knows England are going to bowl full so he can clear that front foot and hit through the line. He is trying to frustrate England, who will have regrouped at tea

    1/3/2014 3:59:28 AM
  • Over 49 - Australia 184/5 (Smith 40, Haddin 50)
[50]He's done it again. AGAIN. Comes to the crease with his side in trouble, counterpunches 50 like it's nothing at all. He's not even scored all of them with the edge this time. Couple of good short balls from Stokes to Smith, but the all-rounder is called for two no-balls. First for overstepping, then for another breach of Finn's Law.
    1/3/2014 3:59:38 AM
  • Over 50 - Australia 188/5 (Smith 40, Haddin 54)
Anderson back on. Haddin smacks him over mid-on for four more. Hard work for England's three remaining bowlers here.
    1/3/2014 4:03:55 AM
  • Over 51 - Australia 193/5 (Smith 45, Haddin 54)
Glorious shot from Smith, leaning into a cover-drive and dispatching the ball to the fence. A clip to leg brings a single, and this pair sense they've got control of the match right now. On the plus side, no crease or stump-bothering infractions from Stokes in that over.
    1/3/2014 4:08:05 AM
  • Over 52 - Australia 201/5 (Smith 48, Haddin 59)
Smith pulls an Anderson long-hop through midwicket for three. Haddin repeats the shot with better timing and gets four. The 200 is up, and so too is the 100 partnership. Desperate session for England.
    1/3/2014 4:12:33 AM
  • The ECB announce that Rankin will return to the field later today #ashes
  • Nasser believes England have bowled too short at Haddin

    1/3/2014 4:14:21 AM
  • Tea
[tea]Just the 107 runs at better than four an over in that session. England are a bowler down, Borthwick looks way out of his depth, and Haddin is Haddining things again. Australia past 200 on a pitch that has offered plenty of assistance to bowlers not bowling half-volleys, full-tosses and long-hops. Broad and Anderson bowled superb spells straight after lunch, but England have let things slip horribly since then.
    1/3/2014 4:14:27 AM
  • The ECB hope* that Rankin will return to the field later today #ashes
  • Betting
[betting]Big change in the betting after another Haddin-inspired Aussie fightback. The 5-0 whitewash now just 1/2 with Sky Bet. England out to 100/30, and the draw coming back in slightly to 5/1. Haddin's 5/4 for another century in his astonishingly good series.
    1/3/2014 4:18:23 AM
  • Key wicket - Hussey falls to a ripper of a catch by Craig Simmons on the third man boundary. Thunder 78-3 #BBL03
  • Eoin Morgan looking to cash in after being dropped by Brad Hogg on 0. The England batsman going well now though 26 off 19 #BBL03
  • Big wicket - Morgan run out for 48. Thunder struggling on 114/5 ##BBL03
  • Morgan very unlucky to have been given out after grounding his bat before it bounced up. Could be the turning point #BBL03
  • Scorchers chasing 158 to win at the WACA. Thunder desperate to record their first win since December 2011. Game on #BBL03
  • been in contact with Lord's and actually was right decision - law change re: bat being grounded was discussed but never changed

  • The Verdict returns to SS2 HD at 9pm tonight, did England get the team selection right at the SCG? Use #AshesVerdictYes or #AshesVerdictNo
  • WATCH: Huge support for both Finn and Onions, but it was Ben Stokes who did the damage with six wickets at the SCG: bit.ly/Kotunj
  • What about the inclusion of Scott Borthwick, who took one wicket for 49 runs in his seven overs. Was it too early to pick him? #AshesVerdict
  • Over 37 - England 81/6 (Stokes 29, Bairstow 7)
Stokes pushes for three into the covers off the back foot to start Johnson's over. Bairstow is trying to stay leg-side of the ball against the left-arm seamer to open up the off-side. It sort of works for him, flashing an edge over the slips and away for four, safe enough shot, plenty of bat on it.
    1/4/2014 2:41:56 AM
  • Over 38 - England 86/6 (Stokes 31, Bairstow 10)
Bairstow whips a straight delivery from Lyon (operating from round-the-wicket) for a couple behind square, not a high percentage shot with a short-leg and leg-slip in place. He then advances down the track to drive for a single to midwicket, more like it. Stokes sweeps for a single to keep the strike.
    1/4/2014 2:45:20 AM
  • Over 39 - England 88/6 (Stokes 33, Bairstow 10)
England have survived another Johnson spell, Siddle on now to replace him. Stokes leans into a cover drive for a couple runs.
    1/4/2014 2:50:32 AM
  • Over 40 - England 90/6 (Stokes 34, Bairstow 11)
Bairstow misses out on a full toss from Lyon, only gets a single. Stokes keeps the strike with a single of his own, punched off the back foot towards mid-off.
    1/4/2014 2:53:38 AM
  • The Johnson fan club are already celebrating 5-0

    1/4/2014 2:54:08 AM
  • Over 41 - England 95/6 (Stokes 39, Bairstow 11)
Stokes flashes a cut to the boundary, bit edgy but nobody was catching that. Poor delivery from Siddle, short and wide. Stokes drives down the ground for a single in text-book fashion - still head, high elbow.
    1/4/2014 2:56:27 AM
  • [umpire-review]Stokes is hit on the pad by Lyon playing forward in defence and Australia decide to review. Stays not out, Stokes was hit outside the line of off-stump and playing a shot. Wasn't much in it. Australia are out of reviews until 80 overs, when they get two new ones.
    1/4/2014 3:00:26 AM
  • Over 42 - England 97/6 (Stokes 39, Bairstow 12)
[dropped-catch]Bairstow advances to drive against Lyon, doesn't quite get to the pitch but follows through with the shot anyway. Lyon dives to his right and parries it one handed. Tough chance, more of a half-chance. Eventful over.
    1/4/2014 3:02:45 AM
  • Over 43 - England 99/6 (Stokes 39, Bairstow 14)
Bairstow takes on a short ball from Siddle and picks up two runs, bit top edgy but fell short of the fielder back on the fence.
    1/4/2014 3:06:35 AM
  • Over 44 - England 101/6 (Stokes 40, Bairstow 15)
Single for each batsman on the leg-side during Lyon's latest over. Huge cheer as England move to a collective three figures. Haddin is trying to engage Stokes in some (friendly) chat. Peace has broken out for the time being.
    1/4/2014 3:09:49 AM
  • Over 45 - England 101/6 (Stokes 40, Bairstow 15)
Bairstow happy to leave a succession of deliveries outside off-stump from Siddle. Game of patience. Maiden takes us through to drinks.
