Australia v England - Fifth Test

Australia v England - Fifth Test

  • The players make their way out for the evening session

    1/3/2014 4:37:52 AM
  • Over 54 - Australia 218/5 (Smith 53, Haddin 71)
Stokes starts after tea. Haddin is straight back into his stride, leaning back to drive in the air through cover for four and then smashing the final ball of the over back past Stokes for another boundary.
    1/3/2014 4:40:24 AM
  • Over 55 - Australia 224/5 (Smith 54, Haddin 75)
Haddin is on the charge, smashing another short ball from Broad to the straight midwicket fence.
    1/3/2014 4:45:29 AM
  • [wicket]Haddin c Cook b Stokes 75

Haddin goes for one shot too many, edging a big drive to first slip. No worries for Cook this time, pouching a straightforward chance. Haddin was slightly late in coming forward to bring his weight into the shot.
    1/3/2014 4:47:11 AM
  • [mikeatherton] That was another fantastic innings from Brad Haddin. England now need to do to Australia's tail what they have been doing to theirs.

    1/3/2014 4:50:34 AM
  • Over 56 - Australia 226/6 (Smith 55, Johnson 0)
Johnson comes out to join Smith and gets off strike via a leg-bye. Half-appeal for caught behind against Smith from the final ball of Stokes' over. The batsman was undone by low bounce as he looked to pull and there was a noise - but Stokes wasn't particularly interested.
    1/3/2014 4:52:05 AM
  • Over 57 - Australia 228/6 (Smith 55, Johnson 2)
Broad doesn't miss the chance to give Johnson a taste of his own medicine with some short stuff. Johnson ducks late to avoid one, is hit on the gloves playing half-forward and then fends off another for a couple of runs to open his account.
    1/3/2014 4:54:56 AM
  • Over 58 - Australia 233/6 (Smith 60, Johnson 2)
Smith cuts late and hard for his 11th four after Stokes offered some width. A full toss later in the over is bunted into the leg-side for a single.
    1/3/2014 4:58:31 AM
  • Over 59 - Australia 237/6 (Smith 64, Johnson 2)
Smith dispatches another four - the 12th of his innings - through the covers from a gentle Anderson offering. Smith has scored 48 of his 64 in boundaries.
    1/3/2014 5:04:38 AM
  • Over 60 - Australia 239/6 (Smith 64, Johnson 4)
Johnson picks up a couple into the leg-side before Stokes is briefly interested in an lbw shout. Was too high.
    1/3/2014 5:08:12 AM
  • Brad Haddin's counter-attacking 75 has rescued Australia at the SCG

    1/3/2014 5:08:48 AM
  • Over 61 - Australia 240/6 (Smith 65, Johnson 4)
Just a single for Smith, behind square on the leg-side from Anderson's latest over.
    1/3/2014 5:21:52 AM
  • Rankin injured

Rankin returns to the attack but only for one delivery before the physio is called back out. After a discussion, Rankin leaves the field for the second time clutching his left hamstring. Think that will be the last we see of him for today... possibly for the match.
    1/3/2014 5:23:00 AM
  • Over 62 - Australia 242/6 (Smith 66, Johnson 5)
Stokes finishes off Rankin's over, just a single for Smith into the leg-side from it. Cook is now in a tricky situation juggling his bowling attack. Broad, Anderson and Stokes have already put in a decent shift today - and in the series as a whole... Does he risk another spell for Borthwick?
    1/3/2014 5:23:25 AM
  • Over 63 - Australia 245/6 (Smith 69, Johnson 5)
Smith collects three with a well-timed push that beats backward point before playing out the remainder of Anderson's over in defence.
    1/3/2014 5:25:13 AM
  • Over 64 - Australia 253/6 (Smith 73, Johnson 9)
Smith brings up Australia's 250 with a flamboyant drive back over mid-off and keeps the strike with a single into the covers from Stokes' final ball.
    1/3/2014 5:27:56 AM
  • Over 65 - Australia 260/6 (Smith 80, Johnson 9)
Smith is playing some outrageous shots at the moment, driving Anderson back over his head for four with a huge backlift and full, flowing follow-through. Mis-field in the covers allows Smith to keep the strike.
    1/3/2014 5:31:10 AM
  • Borthwick is back for a second spell. Plenty of protection with men out deep on both sides.
    1/3/2014 5:31:57 AM
  • Smith (81*) has picked up the mantle since Haddin's departure

    1/3/2014 5:33:26 AM
  • Over 66 - Australia 262/6 (Smith 81, Johnson 10)
Borthwick is back for a second spell. Plenty of protection with men out deep on both sides. A much better over, passing Smith's outside edge with a delivery that drew him forward then spun away, and beating Smith's drive with a non-turning leg-break (possibly intentional, possibly not - didn't look like a googly).
    1/3/2014 5:36:43 AM
  • Over 67 - Australia 267/6 (Smith 85, Johnson 11)
Broad returns for another spell, his pace has been slightly down on usual today - and he also had a brief spell off the field during the morning session. Smith guides another four - his 14th - down to third-man with sweet timing.
    1/3/2014 5:40:44 AM
  • [wicket]Johnson c sub (Root) b Borthwick 12

Johnson slogs high in the air and Root - on the field as sub for Rankin - takes the catch after moving in off the long-on boundary. A maiden Test wicket for Borthwick.
    1/3/2014 5:42:40 AM
  • [ianbotham] That wicket will do Borthwick's confidence the world of good. He's only had to wait 4.3 overs to take his first Test wicket - if he keeps that up he'll do alright!

    1/3/2014 5:46:27 AM
  • Over 68 - Australia 272/6 (Smith 89, Harris 0)
Harris makes his way to the middle but is not on strike as the batsmen crossed. Smith finishes Borthwick's over by slapping a full toss for three towards midwicket, just pulled in short of the rope.
    1/3/2014 5:47:55 AM
  • Over 69 - Australia 276/7 (Smith 92, Harris 0)
Big gap at mid-on, and Smith wristily works a full-length delivery from Broad through that gap to pick up three runs and move into the 90s. Harris evades a couple of short balls and doesn't evade one, which loops over short-leg off some part of body, bat or glove. An innovative hook-duck from Harris is 50 per cent successful. The successful part was the duck.
    1/3/2014 5:52:08 AM
  • Over 70 - Australia 289/7 (Smith 104, Harris 1)
[100]It's been a superb innings for 90 runs, and then an absolute gift for the last 10 as Smith whacks a six over long-on and then, on 99 not out, is served the biggest, loopiest, easiest full-toss to whack to the fence to bring up his landmark. Will probably by slightly annoyed to only hit it for four. Takes an easy single from the last ball of the over to keep the strike.
    1/3/2014 5:56:30 AM
  • David on Smith's innings today:
[davidgower] His driving has been sweet, his timing has been sweet and if you're looking for a ball to get to your hundred that was it. A high full toss from Borthwick, the perfect New Year's gift

    1/3/2014 5:57:11 AM
  • Over 71 - Australia 294/7 (Smith 105, Harris 1)
Slightly different examinations here for the batsmen. Borthwick lobbing gentle full-tosses at one end, Broad bowling bouncers at Harris' head at the other. Harris senses what's coming when Broad goes round the wicket and backs away to have a big wipe to leg. Misses, but the ball climbs after passing the swishing blade and away for four byes as Bairstow can only tip it over the bar.
    1/3/2014 6:02:22 AM
  • Over 72 - Australia 302/7 (Smith 112, Harris 2)
This is painful to watch. Couple of early singles before Smith swipes a long-hop to deep midwicket for a scampered two before collecting four more easy runs from a thigh-high Borthwick full-toss.
    1/3/2014 6:05:41 AM
  • 1/3/2014 6:06:42 AM
  • Over 73 - Australia 312/7 (Smith 112, Harris 12)
Harris now smacking Anderson around. What a day for England. Gets a bit lucky with a top-edged pull over the slips but then plays two nice back-foot punches. The first brings two, the second is really sweetly timed and runs away to the boundary.

  • Over 74 - Australia 318/7 (Smith 115, Harris 15)
Would be harsh to criticise Stokes, who continues to run in hard but with diminishing returns on a tiring day. Looks close to spent here and is picked off for six runs by Smith and Harris.
    1/3/2014 6:14:44 AM
  • Over 75 - Australia 325/7 (Smith 115, Harris 22)
Huge from Harris. A short ball from Anderson sits up to be hit, and Harris obliges, sending the ball several rows back at midwicket. England being destroyed here.
    1/3/2014 6:18:27 AM
  • Harris c Anderson b Stokes 22

[wicket]A fourth wicket for the persevering Stokes as Harris chips a drive to Anderson at cover.
    1/3/2014 6:21:49 AM
  • WICKET! Make that five for Stokes! Two in two balls! Siddle nicks his first delivery through to Bairstow. Great effort. Aus 325-9 #ashes
  • Brilliant from @benstokes38 ... The shining light of the tour for England... #Ashes
  • Siddle c Bairstow b Stokes 0

[five-wicket-innings]Siddle goes first ball, and Stokes has a five-wicket haul to go with his Perth century. What a beacon of shining light he has been among the unending shod of England's series.
    1/3/2014 6:25:05 AM
  • WICKET! Six for @benstokes38 ! Smith (115) is the third man dismissed in the over and Australia are all out for 326 #ashes
  • Smith c sub (Root)  b Stokes 115

[wicket]Three wickets in the over for Stokes, who now has six-fer. Australia all out for 326.
    1/3/2014 6:27:20 AM
  • Michael reflects on a day to remember for Stokes:
[mikeatherton] What I've liked about Ben Stokes is that he has just rolled up his sleeves and got on with it today. England have been a bowler down for most of the day but he has just got on with it. Out of the rubble of the Ashes England have found one or two cricketers to persevere with and he is certainly one.

    1/3/2014 6:27:40 AM
  • Stokes finishes with career-best figures of 6-99. England's openers now face a tricky spell before the close #ashes
  • Shane believes Australia are strong favourites now:
[shanewarne] I think Australia have done unbelievably well to get 326. Smith and Haddin played outstandingly well. I think England were one wicket away from bowling Australia out for 150 but they just didn't get it. I expect England to be jumping and hopping all over the place in this spell.
