Australia v England - Fifth Test

Australia v England - Fifth Test

  • Andrew thinks Carberry could have played his last Test innings:
[andrewstrauss] Carberry played really well today, he showed much more attacking intent but the end result was still the same. It's another score in the 40s for Carberry, who in essence was playing for his place in the side and I don't think he's quite done enough.

  • Over 22 - England 90/5 (Stokes 3, Bairstow 0)
In between the wickets of Carberry and Ballance, Stokes was able to get off the mark with three to midwicket. Plenty of chat for the Durham man, who gave Johnson a send-off when he dismissed him earlier in the day. Bairstow almost turns his first ball straight to Warner at leg-slip, dropped just short.

  • [wicket]Bairstow c Bailey b Lyon 0

Another good catch for Bailey at short-leg as Bairstow joins the post-tea procession. He was stretching forward in defence but got an inside edge and Bailey reacted quickly to readjust his hands and reach up.
    1/5/2014 4:42:33 AM
  • [wicket]Borthwick c Clarke b Lyon 4

Borthwick becomes the fourth wicket in 12 balls since tea, Clarke at slip taking the catch one handed just above the turf. Superb. Borthwick was looking to work into the leg-side and was surprised by the turn.

  • Over 23 - England 95/7 (Stokes 3, Broad 0)
Broad comes out to join Stokes, stopping for a drink on the way. Carnage.

  • Officially pathetic...
  • Over 24 - England 96/7 (Stokes 5, Broad 0)
Stokes pushes the first ball of the over into the covers for a single to bring Broad onto strike against Johnson. Broad is persisting with his jump across the stumps as the left-armer releases the ball but Johnson fails to get his yorkers on target.
    1/5/2014 4:51:35 AM
  • Over 25 - England 96/7 (Stokes 6, Broad 4)
Stokes top-edges a sweep short of the man at deep backward-square leg. Broad appears marginally more comfortable against Lyon, slog-sweeping to the boundary to get off the mark before failing to make contact attempting to repeat the dose.

  • [nasserhussain] It looks like the England fans will be spending the next couple of days on the beach wondering where it all went wrong

    1/5/2014 4:56:51 AM
  • Over 26 - England 102/7 (Stokes 7, Broad 4)
Again Stokes is happy to take a single from the first ball of Johnson's over and again Broad is able to safely negotiate the remainder, although it is far from convincing stuff, playing and missing at a slower ball and twice Johnson is up for half-shouts for lbw.

  • [6]Over 27 - England 122/7 (Stokes 27, Broad 4)
Stokes tees off against Lyon hitting two sixes and two fours back down the ground during an over costing 20 runs. Impressive power and timing from the Durham man.
    1/5/2014 5:03:12 AM
  • Over 28 - England 122/7 (Stokes 27, Broad 9)
Some rare success for Broad against Johnson, leaning back to drill a drive over cover for four.
    1/5/2014 5:06:48 AM
  • [6]Over 29 - England 139/7 (Stokes 32, Broad 16)
Stokes advances down the pitch to Lyon and, although he didn't get close to the ball, follows through to send a drive over extra cover for four. Broad gets involved in the fun, planting a slog-sweep into the midwicket stand for six.
    1/5/2014 5:10:15 AM
  • [wicket]Stokes b Harris 32

Stokes drags a big heave onto his stumps after advancing to the first delivery of Harris' spell. It was fun while it lasted.

  • [andrewstrauss] It's hard to think of a more one-sided series. Even 2006-07 wasn't as one-sided as this!

  • Over 30 - England 145/8 (Broad 21, Anderson 1)
Anderson comes out to join Broad, who pulls a short ball from Harris to the square-leg boundary and then fends another bumper from in front of his throat just over a diving Warner at backward point.
    1/5/2014 5:17:19 AM
  • [6]Over 31 - England 160/8 (Broad 36, Anderson 1)
Broad has played some sweetly-timed shots in this match, slog-sweeping Lyon for two more sixes. England going down swinging.
    1/5/2014 5:21:26 AM
  • [wicket]Broad b Harris 42

Broad adds another leg-side six - his fourth - before having his leg-stump knocked back by Harris while going for another big slog.
