Australia v England - Fifth Test

Australia v England - Fifth Test

  • The commentary box seem pretty split on whether or not that carried through to Haddin. Athers and Bumble think it was out, Beefy, you probably won't be surprised to hear, didn't. But overall the decision was fair enough on the evidence given

  • You know the position of a team is in Dire Straits when the crowd applaud a player once he makes DOUBLE figures... #Ashes .
  • Over 25 - England 41/5 (Ballance 11, Stokes 11)
A brilliant diving stop from Rogers denies Stokes four runs for a cracking cover-drive. A thick inside edge takes him to 11, a score Ballance joins him on with a cracking cover-drive of his own. Nothing Rogers or anyone else can do about that one.
    1/4/2014 1:04:17 AM
  • Over 26 - England 46/5 (Ballance 15, Stokes 12)
England rattling along now. Another superb cover-drive from Ballance brings four. The 51 all out that started Andy Flower's England reign is well within reach now.
    1/4/2014 1:09:14 AM
  • Shane gives his view on the Haddin 'catch':
[shanewarne] For me you could clearly see that he got his glove underneath the ball. It went in cleanly.

    1/4/2014 1:12:10 AM
  • Over 27 - England 53/5 (Stokes 17, Ballance 17)
Getting embarrassing for Australia now as the partnership races to 30 in a flurry of strokemaking. Stokes tucks Harris past mid-on for two and then whips three more through midwicket. Another pleasing drive through the covers from Ballance brings a couple more. England are past 50.
    1/4/2014 1:12:21 AM
  • Over 28 - England 58/5 (Stokes 22, Ballance 17)
Spin for the first time as Nathan Lyon comes on to bowl. Stokes rocks back to hit him past a deep-set cover fielder for four and then gets a single off a leading edge that loops safely into the offside.

  • Ballance takes a blow on the helmet after another brutal bouncer from Johnson. A new lid arrives and he's ready to continue. Eng 60-5
  • Or maybe not... A long delay here as another helmet is called #ashes #stayup
  • Over 29 - England 61/5 (Ballance 17, Stokes 23)
Change of ends for Johnson. Stokes gets a single before Ballance gets smacked flush on the grille by a perfect bouncer. Tried to stand up and play it, but it got too big for him and he had no choice but to wear it. There's a delay while Ballance gets a new batting helmet. Always amazed that Test batsmen lug all those bats and gloves around but only have one batting helmet. Ballance isn't satisfied with the various possible lenders being brought out. Think in the end he's bolted a new grille on to his own helmet, and eventually we can continue. Don't get cleaned up playing back to a full one here... he doesn't. Short again - a no-ball it turns out - and Ballance gets back and across and plays the ball safely to ground. Repeats the trick next ball before swaying out of the way. Played those three short balls okay, so perhaps the big test will be the full one when it comes. It does from the over's final delivery, and he pushes it safely enough to mid-on.

  • Shaken, but not stirred: Ballance takes a blow to the head

    1/4/2014 1:29:41 AM
  • Lunch
[lunch]England lost four batsmen with 90+ caps each in the first hour. Two lads with five caps between them survived the second with real skill and courage. England plummeting inevitably towards a 5-0 defeat, and this session as much as any other has highlighted the fact that this is an England team that has entered - and still has some way to go to exit - a period of change and transition.

  • Durham and Yorkshire are playing well at the SCG... #Ashes
  • Betting
[betting]Australia now as short as 1/9 with Sky Bet to win this Test and wrap up their 5-0 victory. England are 9/1, with the draw right out to 14s. Stokes is 6/5 to make a half-century, Ballance 7/4. Both youngsters to score 50s is PRICE BOOSTED to 11/2.

  • Strauss analyses a morning session of two halves for England

    1/4/2014 1:58:50 AM
  • Over 31 - England 62/5 (Ballance 18, Stokes 23)
Johnson gets us under way after lunch with a short ball down the leg-side that Ballance easily evades. Johnson gets one to shoot through low under Ballance's cut before the left-hander turns a single to square-leg to get off strike.
    1/4/2014 2:14:19 AM
  • [wicket]Ballance c Haddin b Lyon 18

Ballance gets a thin edge through to the wicketkeeper after stretching forward in defence against the spinner. It turned just the right amount to kiss the outside edge.
    1/4/2014 2:17:14 AM
  • Beefy gives his view on Ballance's first Test knock:
[ianbotham] From what I saw of Ballance there he's worth persevering with. That was a good ball from Lyon. There was dip, turn and bounce and it would have got a lot of left-handers out.

    1/4/2014 2:19:09 AM
  • Over 32 - England 62/6 (Stokes 23, Bairstow 0)
That was a decent ball from Lyon, drew Ballance forward and turned quite sharply off the pitch.
    1/4/2014 2:20:55 AM
  • Over 33 - England 67/6 (Stokes 23, Bairstow 0)
Ouch! Stokes gets hit on the top of the boot by a slower-ball yorker from Johnson. Australia briefly consider a review but was heading past leg-stump. Johnson follows up with five wides, short and down the leg-side, no chance for Haddin.
    1/4/2014 2:24:41 AM
  • Over 34 - England 72/6 (Stokes 25, Bairstow 3)
Lyon is taken straight out of the attack after his breakthrough. Bairstow opens his account with a single into the leg-side off Siddle and follows up with another couple turned into the same area.
    1/4/2014 2:29:56 AM
  • The 'Benaud Bay' are enjoying what they're seeing today

    1/4/2014 2:32:44 AM
  • Over 35 - England 72/6 (Stokes 25, Bairstow 3)
Johnson twice beats Bairstow outside off-stump, very loose from the England batsman, should be leaving those alone.
    1/4/2014 2:34:58 AM
  • Over 36 - England 73/6 (Stokes 26, Bairstow 3)
Lyon took a wicket, got taken off but is now back on after just one over from Siddle! Clarke mixing things up. There is not much middle ground when Stokes is batting against the spinner, blocks or attempts a big shot. Just a single into the covers for the Durham all-rounder from the over.
    1/4/2014 2:37:38 AM
  • Over 37 - England 81/6 (Stokes 29, Bairstow 7)
Stokes pushes for three into the covers off the back foot to start Johnson's over. Bairstow is trying to stay leg-side of the ball against the left-arm seamer to open up the off-side. It sort of works for him, flashing an edge over the slips and away for four, safe enough shot, plenty of bat on it.
    1/4/2014 2:41:56 AM
  • Over 38 - England 86/6 (Stokes 31, Bairstow 10)
Bairstow whips a straight delivery from Lyon (operating from round-the-wicket) for a couple behind square, not a high percentage shot with a short-leg and leg-slip in place. He then advances down the track to drive for a single to midwicket, more like it. Stokes sweeps for a single to keep the strike.
    1/4/2014 2:45:20 AM
  • Over 39 - England 88/6 (Stokes 33, Bairstow 10)
England have survived another Johnson spell, Siddle on now to replace him. Stokes leans into a cover drive for a couple runs.
    1/4/2014 2:50:32 AM
  • Over 40 - England 90/6 (Stokes 34, Bairstow 11)
Bairstow misses out on a full toss from Lyon, only gets a single. Stokes keeps the strike with a single of his own, punched off the back foot towards mid-off.
    1/4/2014 2:53:38 AM
  • The Johnson fan club are already celebrating 5-0

    1/4/2014 2:54:08 AM
  • Over 41 - England 95/6 (Stokes 39, Bairstow 11)
Stokes flashes a cut to the boundary, bit edgy but nobody was catching that. Poor delivery from Siddle, short and wide. Stokes drives down the ground for a single in text-book fashion - still head, high elbow.
    1/4/2014 2:56:27 AM
  • [umpire-review]Stokes is hit on the pad by Lyon playing forward in defence and Australia decide to review. Stays not out, Stokes was hit outside the line of off-stump and playing a shot. Wasn't much in it. Australia are out of reviews until 80 overs, when they get two new ones.
    1/4/2014 3:00:26 AM
  • Over 42 - England 97/6 (Stokes 39, Bairstow 12)
[dropped-catch]Bairstow advances to drive against Lyon, doesn't quite get to the pitch but follows through with the shot anyway. Lyon dives to his right and parries it one handed. Tough chance, more of a half-chance. Eventful over.
    1/4/2014 3:02:45 AM
  • Over 43 - England 99/6 (Stokes 39, Bairstow 14)
Bairstow takes on a short ball from Siddle and picks up two runs, bit top edgy but fell short of the fielder back on the fence.
    1/4/2014 3:06:35 AM
  • Over 44 - England 101/6 (Stokes 40, Bairstow 15)
Single for each batsman on the leg-side during Lyon's latest over. Huge cheer as England move to a collective three figures. Haddin is trying to engage Stokes in some (friendly) chat. Peace has broken out for the time being.
    1/4/2014 3:09:49 AM
  • Over 45 - England 101/6 (Stokes 40, Bairstow 15)
Bairstow happy to leave a succession of deliveries outside off-stump from Siddle. Game of patience. Maiden takes us through to drinks.
    1/4/2014 3:12:14 AM
  • @FredBoycott : Just back from t'nets. 'Ave I missed owt' ?” Young uns doing fine , Fred
  • Over 46 - England 103/6 (Stokes 41, Bairstow 16)
Two singles from Lyon's over. Stokes with a calm clip to leg, Bairstow in less secure fashion via a big mow. No harm done, though.
    1/4/2014 3:17:54 AM
  • @FredBoycott : @BumbleCricket How did the old uns' do? Did KP play a determined responsible innings or was he out sloggin'” Nicked off ...
  • Over 47 - England 106/6 (Stokes 43, Bairstow 17)
Siddle picked off for three singles. Such an impressive effort again from Stokes here.
    1/4/2014 3:22:35 AM
  • [davidgower] Ben Stokes continues to enhance his reputation match by match. He's been a real positive for England on this tour

    1/4/2014 3:24:07 AM
  • Over 48 - England 111/6 (Stokes 47, Bairstow 18)
Whack. Stokes down on one knee to absolutely hammer a sweep shot to the midwicket boundary off Lyon. Close to being a one-man show this.
    1/4/2014 3:26:34 AM
  • Bairstow c Bailey b Siddle 18

[wicket]Painfully soft dismissal. There's a man catching at close mid-on. Bairstow chips the ball straight to him. It actually looks like he's trying to do it.
    1/4/2014 3:27:38 AM
  • Stokes b Siddle 47

[wicket]Two in the over for Siddle as Stokes, who has batted so well, inexplicably leaves a straight one. Hits the inside of off stump. As bad a leave as Cook's. Follow-on right back in the equation now if Australia fancy a stab at wrapping this match up today.
    1/4/2014 3:33:33 AM
  • Over 49 - England 112/8 (Borthwick 1, Broad 0)
In between those dismissals, Scott Borthwick scored his first Test run. So... every cloud.
    1/4/2014 3:34:32 AM
  • [davidlloyd] One brings two for Australia. I'm baffled at the number of batsmen who leave straight balls. The Stokes dismissal came from nowhere. Why would you want to leave that?
