Australia v England - Fourth Test

Australia v England - Fourth Test

  • Plus, Sydney Thunder take on the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash from 8.30am on Sky Sports 3.
  • England's bowlers have been able to exact the same sort of pressure that Australia's bowlers have been doing this series. They were able to suffocate the Australia batsmen, who could not find a way to get away from the England bowlers. I think we are all a bit surprised. When England lost their last four wickets quickly this morning, we were thinking 'here we go again'!

  • We have said 'this looks a lovely pitch,  a nice covering of grass,' but the players have found it very difficult to score consistently and England have got a handy lead. Haddin is in great nick. He just goes out, not a care in the world, blasts away and he's still there.
[davidlloyd]David thinks it's a trickier wicket than it looks

  • It's been a very disappointing day. England bowled well and we were probably a little bit careless at times. It's the worst day we have had in the series so far but it happens and England are still a very good side. It's one of those surfaces where, if you bowl in good areas, it is hard to score. England bowled very well today and we got bogged down. It wasn't until Haddin came in at the end and played a few shots that we got away.

  • We knew it was a hard wicket to score on and that, if we bowled well, we might get some reward. We stuck to our plan. There are no demons in the pitch but it is hard to score on. We just tried to bang out our areas and be as boring and patient as possible throughout the whole day. In games previously maybe we've got a bit excited and gone away from our plan. That's something we concentrated on for this game.

  • This has been England's best day (of the series) by a distance. The bowlers, as they have done on so many occasions previously, stood up and bowled magnificently. There was some good catching, some good ground fielding, and England deserve to be where they are. Batsmen on both sides have struggled with confidence. That sounds a bit crazy when you are 3-0 up, as Australia are, but the hard work has been done by the bowlers.

  • England controlled the game, which they haven't really done. For the first time in the series, England went through that lower order. Their plans and methods all worked out perfectly. Bairstow was good. I always think if you don't notice a keeper, it's a good thing, because it means they have not done anything wrong.

  • Preview: It was a rare 'winning day' for England on day two but as the old saying goes 'one swallow doesn't make a summer' and England will need to string another solid couple of days together if they are to end Australia's hopes of a series whitewash. England will take a 91-run lead into the third day but with Brad Haddin (43*) still at the crease, Australia remain dangerous.
    12/27/2013 10:40:11 PM
  • Nasser warns of the the threat of Haddin this morning:
[nasserhussain] It's the first time in this series that England have gone into day three ahead and they've got to make this advantage pay. The first priority is to get rid of Haddin or Lyon quickly, 91 runs ahead may seem like a lot but an hour of Haddin won't make it count for much. Then when they bat they have got to be more positive. It's going to be hot and Australia might be a bowler down - we don't know about the fitness of Shane Watson - so keep them out in the field for as long as possible.

  • England are hunting for the final Australia wicket at the MCG. Join us on SS2 HD and follow online:… #ashes #stayup
  • Over 74 - Australia 164/9 (Haddin 43, Lyon 0)
Last man Nathan Lyon survives the final three balls of the Stuart Broad over that was cut short halfway through last evening by the wicket of Peter Siddle.
He takes the last delivery on the body, only unlike Piers Morgan yesterday tea time he's not backed away. Haddin now on strike to Anderson - field set to spread.
    12/27/2013 11:32:10 PM
  • Over 75 - Australia 168/9 (Haddin 47, Lyon 0)
Haddin gets the first runs of the morning, albeit with an outside edge that goes between Bairstow and Cook, who is at a wide first slip position.
Probably wouldn't have carried anyway. Anderson had beaten him twice to start the over, and most importantly makes sure the wicketkeeper-batsman can't get a single off the last to pinch the strike.

    12/27/2013 11:38:12 PM
  • Over 76 - Australia 169/9 (Haddin 47, Lyon 1)
Broad can't remove Lyon, but at least he does allow him to get a single off the last ball of the over.
The no 11 had seemed set to get off the mark with a lovely on-drive earlier on, only for Anderson to produce a superb diving stop. Good cricket all round.
    12/27/2013 11:40:47 PM
  • Over 77 - Australia 175/9 (Haddin 48, Lyon 6)
England pay dearly for no third man, an outside edge from Lyon - albeit going down along the turf - darting down in the gap between second slip and gully for four. To be fair, the tail-ender has looked in better touch so far this morning than Haddin, who did attempt to smear one delivery from Anderson but ended up bunting it out towards the fielder at deep point for a single
    12/27/2013 11:44:06 PM
  • Nathan Lyon takes evasive action at the start of day three

    12/27/2013 11:48:09 PM
  • Over 78 - Australia 180/9 (Haddin 49, Lyon 10)
Another streaky boundary for Lyon, this time an attempted drive off Broad going high over the head of a leaping Carberry at backward point.
No chance of a catch, no chance of catching up with it before it reaches the rope. Australia now trail by 75 runs and this last-wicket stand is worth 16 from 27 deliveries.
