Australia v England - Second Test

Australia v England - Second Test

  • Hello and welcome to build-up to day one of the second Ashes Test of the 2013/14 series in Adelaide. Both sets of players are going through their final practice sessions before day one and excitement is building in the city ahead of the game.

  • Michael Carberry will be keen for some runs at the top of the order

    12/4/2013 4:35:57 AM
  • Will Monty be called up as a second spin option?

    12/4/2013 4:36:44 AM
  • And what chances of a debut for this man?

    12/4/2013 4:37:21 AM
  • So England have plenty to think about over the next few hours. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on which side should and will play. Michael Atherton believes Gary Ballance and Tim Bresnan will come in for Jonathan Trott and Chris Tremlett. Nasser Hussain thinks Ian Bell should step up to number three, David Lloyd thinks two spinners would be just 'too radical' for England. We will only know at the toss tomorrow what England have chosen to do

  • Tim Bresnan swats Steven Finn through the covers

  • Michael Clarke has cheekily named the England team, while Alastair Cook has opted keep his options open

    12/4/2013 7:45:05 AM
  • Australia captain Michael Clarke has cheekily named both teams for the second Ashes Test, almost 24 hours before England's will be confirmed.
I think they'll go 'safety'. I think they'll go Bresnan, and Ballance... so yes, I do have a team for you. Joe Root three, Ballance six, Bresnan at eight or nine or something like that.

    12/4/2013 7:49:08 AM
  • David Gower doesn't want to see players cross the line when sledging.

  • Matt Prior dives for the ball during England's net session

    12/4/2013 9:44:31 AM
  • Australia skipper Michael Clarke

    12/4/2013 9:56:36 AM
  • England captain Alastair Cook will not reveal who will replace Jonathan Trott at No 3 in the order until before the toss.
We're clear in our own mind. It's a tough, crucial position to fill. Trotty has done it 49 times... and was outstanding for us at three and gave us a lot of amazing contributions. It's a big hole to fill, so someone has to stand up and (do that).

  • The scars of England's brutal defeat in Brisbane have faded a little thanks to a week off before this, the second Test of the 2013/14 Ashes series. • Benedict has filed his stats pack ahead of day one. Here are the key pointers:
    [benedictbermange]
    • Two first-class matches have been played at the Adelaide Oval since the start of the use of drop-in pitches, and both ended drawn with an average of 45.87 runs scored per wicket.
    • The last 21 teams to win the toss in Test Matches at Adelaide have chosen to bat first.  The last captain who chose to field was Mohammad Azharuddin in January 1992.  India bowled Australia out on the first day for just 145 but ended up losing by 38 runs.
    • In the last 11 Tests here have been 12 totals of more than 500.
    • Michael Clarke has scored five centuries in eight Adelaide Tests.  One more would equal Ricky Ponting’s total of six at the venue in 17 matches.
    • Kevin Pietersen will try to emulate Jack Hobbs as the only visiting player to score three centuries at the Adelaide Oval.

  • Bumble, out of pocket, previews Day One

    12/4/2013 10:29:55 PM
  • [rain] A sharp shower has just had the groundstaff scampering for the covers. It's very cold and blustery here so hopefully it will blow over quickly and the start time won't be affected
    12/4/2013 10:37:36 PM
  • Beefy gives his view after seeing the pitch (before the shower):
[ianbotham] The pitch is very, very dry, perhaps even drier than the groundstaff expected. With that in mind, I'd expect England to play two spinners.

    12/4/2013 10:47:59 PM
  • A flyover of the new-look Adelaide Oval

    12/4/2013 10:53:43 PM
  • [sunny] I'm pleased to report that the sharp shower has blown over and the players are back on the outfield going through their warm-up routines. The forecast is for the odd shower on this first day, but it is set to improve as the Test match goes on into the weekend

  • Ben Stokes presented with England cap by Andrew Strauss #ashes
  • So it looks like a debut for Stokes. Athers' assessment of the Durham all-rounder:
[mikeatherton] He provides skiddy pace and bowls quite sharply around mid to high 80s. He’s an aggressive hard-hitting batsman who offers great potential, but he’s raw and an unknown quantity

    12/4/2013 11:08:53 PM
  • Awaiting confirmation but it looks like Panesar will play as the second spinner #ashes #stayup
  • Bet live in-play with Sky Bet throughout the night. Before then we have boosted England to 3/1 to come out on top in Adelaide and square the series. See all our 2nd Test markets here

    12/4/2013 11:24:03 PM
  • Two changes for England. Stokes in for Trott. Panesar replaces Tremlett. Australia unchanged. #ashes
  • England: Cook*, Carberry, Root, Pietersen, Bell, Stokes, Prior, Broad, Swann, Anderson, Panesar.
  • Australia win the toss and will bat first here in Adelaide #ashes
  • Australia: Rogers, Warner, Watson, Clarke*, Smith, Bailey, Haddin, Johnson, Siddle, Harris, Lyon #ashes #stayup
  • Don't panic England fans. Remember what happened here three years ago #ashes
  • It looks a very good wicket and can draw strength on what we did here last time. The toss is important but it's what you do in that first hour.
    Alastair Cook
    12/4/2013 11:35:31 PM
  • It looks a very, very dry wicket. There hasn't been too much help for the seamers so far at these drop-in wickets in Adelaide. We are very lucky to have Monty to come in.
    Alastair Cook
