    PAPER REVIEW
England’s day one supremacy makes for some brutal reading in this morning’s papers, the image of a black-eyed Stuart Broad a natural tie-in for some.
    8/16/2014 9:37:25 AM

    A selection of today's headlines...

    8/16/2014 9:38:07 AM
Monday sounds good....after the game maybe ?? Beefy
Under the screaming headline ‘Battered’, Ali Martin, writing in the Sun, writes that “Alastair Cook’s fast bowling bullies beat up India once again” and, with a nod to the forecast, reckons the players (and our pundits) may have to find alternative pursuits at the start of next week.

The England captain may well have dodged a plumb lbw on nine but bat well today and, weather permitting, his troops can spend Monday and Tuesday making inroads into their golf handicaps.”

    8/16/2014 9:39:00 AM
Beefy seems to be making alternative plans already… Meanwhile, Paul Newman, Cricket Correspondent of the Daily Mail, highlights the contribution made by Chris Woakes (3-30) and Chris Jordan (3-32) who capitalised on the early in-roads made by James Anderson and Stuart Broad, justifying their selection at a time when others were calling for Ben Stokes and/or Steven Finn.

This was the bowling performance England badly wanted after naming an unchanged side, with Chris Jordan and Chris Woakes vindicating the faith placed in them by playing a full role in support of jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad. Between them England’s attack were far too hot for a deflated India to handle on a greener than usual Oval pitch.

    Over 43 - England 140-1 (Cook 52, Ballance 36)
England will have one eye on lunch, which is six minutes and probably two overs away. Cook pushes a quicker delivery from Ashwin off his pads for the only run off the over

A look at Cook's wagon-wheel as the skipper's fifty puts England on the brink of overtaking India's first inns total http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BvKIUmrIUAA-zCT.jpg

    Over 44 - England 144-1 (Cook 56, Ballance 36)
Cook is looking well-balanced at the crease and whips Kumar for four more through midwicket, aided by a lazy piece of fielding from Binny. Ashwin to bowl the last over before lunch...
    8/16/2014 11:59:31 AM
    Over 45 - England 148-1 (Cook 56, Ballance 40)
Ballance takes England to lunch with a glorious cover drive for four which levels the scores!
    8/16/2014 12:01:03 PM
    Lunch [lunch]
Almost the perfect session for England, who lost Sam Robson in the second over of the day, bowled by Aaron for 37. Since then, left-handers Cook 56* and Ballance 40* have effortlessly maintained England's firm grip on this Test and will resume after lunch with the scores level. Stay tuned for more updates from the Kia Oval...

A few quick words from Warney as the afternoon session begins...

    8/16/2014 12:40:41 PM
    Over 46 - England 152-1 (Cook 60, Ballance 40)
Cook tickles the first ball of the afternoon session fine past Dhoni, who opts against a dive, and away for four. England take the lead! Bumble in the commentary box believes the five-match series is catching up with Kumar, who is "running out of steam". I'd have to agree. He's been off-colour so far today
    8/16/2014 12:45:24 PM
    Over 47 - England 157-1 (Cook 60, Ballance 45)
You get the feeling this is going to be a long day for India... The sun is out, the pitch is flat and outfield fast. Ballance cuts Ashwin to the rope and then dabs a single. The partnership is now 91 and the lead is nine
    8/16/2014 12:48:49 PM

Gary Ballance acknowledges the generous applause for his fifty. #EngvInd http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BvKVJE-IYAASgUu.jpg

    Over 48 - England 165-1 (Cook 60, Ballance 53) [50]
50 for Ballance! What a start this man is having to his Test career! He has now made three 100s and three 50s in eight Tests, reaching his latest half-century off 77 balls with 11 fours. Two more in this over, one clipped to long-leg, the next guided over the slip cordon after a bang-in ball from Kumar. Great improvisation
    8/16/2014 12:54:21 PM
    Over 49 - England 166-1 (Cook 61, Ballance 53)
Just a Cook single off Ashwin but almost an edge behind after a loose cut from the England skipper, who momentarily loses concentration
    8/16/2014 12:56:04 PM

And that's the century stand up between Cook & Ballance. #EngvInd http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BvKVsEkIYAAee-z.jpg

    Over 50 - England 172-1 (Cook 66, Ballance 53) [dropped-catch]
Drop! Cook dropped on 65! What a miss from Vijay at first slip. It was the perfect height after Aaron had squared up the England skipper but his buddy in the cordon let him down. Cook, who had earlier cut away for four through backward point, regroups and works a single through midwicket. Forlorn looks from Aaron and the India fielders
    8/16/2014 1:02:08 PM
    Over 51 - England 173-1 (Cook 67, Ballance 53)
Ashwin races through another over to Cook, conceding just a single
    8/16/2014 1:04:51 PM
    Over 52 - England 174-1 (Cook 68, Ballance 53)
Cook is more than happy to work the singles after that earlier let-off. Just a single off Aaron, who continues to steam in with plenty of endeavour
    8/16/2014 1:09:41 PM

What might have been... Plenty for Murali Vijay and India to ponder.

    8/16/2014 1:09:52 PM
    Over 53 - England 175-1 (Cook 69, Ballance 53)
A third successive over with just a Cook single to report. England's lead is 27
    8/16/2014 1:11:10 PM
    Over 54 - England 176-1 (Cook 70, Ballance 53)
Aaron is getting the ball to tail in nicely to the left-handers from round the wicket and almost forces Cook to drag a drive back on to his stumps. Instead, he nabs a single. India building some pressure...
    8/16/2014 1:14:11 PM

Go to the top of the class, Mr Cook.

    8/16/2014 1:15:40 PM
    Over 55 - England 179-1 (Cook 71, Ballance 55) [dropped-catch]
Drop! Another life for Cook! This one slightly tougher but Rahane, standing at first slip, got a hand to it after Cook was late on his cut shot off Ashwin. Dropped on 65 & 70, surely Cook is destined to make a century now??
    8/16/2014 1:18:21 PM
    Over 56 - England 182-1 (Cook 74, Ballance 55)
Cook comes forward and jabs Aaron for two down the ground and then works a full ball off middle and off through midwicket for a single. Cook struggling a little here and could do with a spell at the non strikers' end

    8/16/2014 1:24:53 PM
    Over 57 - England 187-1 (Cook 75, Ballance 59)
Ashwin tries to sneak another over through quickly but Ballance dispatches the final delivery through extra cover with aplomb to find the fence
    8/16/2014 1:26:12 PM

Cook ct Vijay bld Aaron 79 [wicket]

Third time lucky for India as Vijay this time clings on at first slip to send England's captain on his way and hand Aaron a deserved wicket
    8/16/2014 1:27:31 PM
[andrewstrauss] It was a curious innings from Cook. Although he scored 79 it was one of those innings where you wonder if you are in better or worse nick at the end of it. A century is proving very difficult to come by for him.

    8/16/2014 1:29:38 PM
    Over 78 - England 257-5 (Root 18, Buttler 14)
Ashwin and Binny bowling well in tandem here and keeping the scoring rate down with the second new ball imminent. Just a Root single to report off the latter, and a strangled lbw appeal on Buttler. Sliding down

    8/16/2014 3:21:05 PM
    Over 79 - England 260-5 (Root 21, Buttler 14)
Root whips Ashwin for two through square-leg and then nudges one into the covers to extend England's lead to 112. Binny to bowl the final over before India take the new ball, you'd think?
    8/16/2014 3:24:26 PM
    Over 80 - England 265-5 (Root 26, Buttler 14)
Lovely batting from Root, who just opens the face of the bat and places his drive through the covers for four - his first of the innings. He adds a single to keep strike. India take the new ball
