England v India - Fifth Test

The Oval

  • Pujara b Broad 4 [wicket]

Pujara is bowled through the gate. He was surprised by the ball seaming back and bouncing more than expected.
    8/15/2014 10:58:55 AM
  • [shanewarne] England’s bowlers are right on top and justifying Cook’s decision to put India in. It was a good cherry from Broad that nipped back and was too good for Pujara. It’s going to be tough for India.

    8/15/2014 11:02:19 AM
  • Over 6 - India 10/2 (Vijay 6, Kohli 0)
England have taken advantage of good bowling conditions in the first half-hour, bringing Virat Kohli to the crease nice and early.
    8/15/2014 11:03:58 AM
  • Over 7 - India 11/2 (Vijay 7, Kohli 0)
Vijay leaves alone as much as possible during another over of Anderson outswingers. He keeps the strike with a single into the off side from the final ball, Kohli has to wait a bit longer to face his first delivery...
    8/15/2014 11:06:24 AM
  • Over 8 - India 11/2 (Vijay 8, Kohli 0)
Another single for Vijay brings the out-of-form Kohli onto strike for the first time... England are immediately appealing for caught behind but it flicked Kohli's pad only on the way through. Kohli is then beaten outside off-stump but survives the over. Excellent over from Broad.
    8/15/2014 11:09:26 AM
  • Pujara - castled by Broad for just four

    8/15/2014 11:12:55 AM
  • Over 9 - India 16/2 (Vijay 8, Kohli 0)
Vijay pads up to a big inswinger but umpire Paul Reiffel is unmoved by Anderson's lbw appeal. It was arguable whether Vijay was playing a shot there, certainly struck his pads outside the line of off-stump and probably a bit too high. Anderson donates four byes to India's cause with an even bigger inswinger that disappears to fine-leg, well out of a diving Buttler's reach.
    8/15/2014 11:15:09 AM
  • Over 10 - India 18/2 (Vijay 9, Kohli 1)
Kohli gets off the mark with a single, dropping a short ball from Broad into the covers. There is also a single for Vijay, turned to fine-leg.
    8/15/2014 11:17:12 AM
  • Over 11 - India 19/2 (Vijay 10, Kohli 1)
Vijay's been India's standout batsman on this tour and he's again giving a good account of himself in difficult circumstances, playing the ball late and with soft hands. Kohli looks less secure against the sideways movement, going after it with his hands.
    8/15/2014 11:22:09 AM
  • Over 12 - India 21/2 (Vijay 12, Kohli 1)
Vijay skews a drive towards midwicket for a couple and is then becalmed for the remainder of Broad's over.
    8/15/2014 11:26:10 AM
  • Over 13 - India 21/2 (Vijay 12, Kohli 6)
More like it from Kohli, driving a full delivery from Anderson through extra cover for four, the first boundary off the bat this morning. Both Anderson and Broad have a short-leg in place, unusual for them but there is certainly some extra bounce and seam movement - so the bat-pad is in play.
    8/15/2014 11:30:03 AM
  • Kohli lbw b Jordan 6

[wicket]Kohli's horror series continues, falling lbw in Jordan's first over. Looking to leave the ball on the back foot, and Jordan got it to nip back just enough to convince Kumar Dharmasena to raise the finger. Hawk-Eye confirms it was hitting off stump.

  • DRINKS - here's another chance to see the TOSS...
    8/15/2014 11:36:19 AM
  • Over 14 - India 26/3 (Vijay 12, Rahane 0)
Great start for Jordan. India's best two batsmen in this series, Vijay and Rahane, now facing a huge rebuilding job.
    8/15/2014 11:39:01 AM
  • [davidgower] It was a very close call and Hawkeye showed that the umpire’s decision was justified – but had he given it not out, then that would have been fair enough too.”

    8/15/2014 11:39:41 AM
  • Over 15 - India 28/3 (Vijay 14, Rahane 0)
Important for England that the back-up seamers keep the pressure on after those fine new-ball spells from Anderson and Broad. Early signs are promising, with Jordan taking the wicket of Kohli and Chris Woakes close to adding Vijay to the list of Indian woe this morning with a big lbw appeal turned down by Paul Reiffel. Clipping the top of leg stump according to Hawk-Eye. Decent shout. Last ball of the over finds the outside edge but it lands short of the cordon and beats the fielder to allow Vijay to complete two.
    8/15/2014 11:44:04 AM
  • Rahane c&b Jordan 0

[wicket]India once again in heaps of trouble as Rahane chips one back to Jordan. Hard to think of a bowler it's less wise to chip the ball back to. Jordan swallows the catch, India 28/4.
    8/15/2014 11:48:38 AM
  • [davidgower] Rahane was just a little early on the shot, trying nothing more than to push the ball back. It was good athleticism from Jordan who now has excellent figures of 2-2-0-2.

    8/15/2014 11:50:26 AM
  • Over 16 - India 28/4 (Vijay 14)
The kindest thing you can say about 28/4 is that it is better than 8/4. Horrible stuff from India, Dhoni strides to the middle with his side in all sorts of trouble once again. Jordan, meanwhile, has taken four wickets in his last 14 balls across two Test matches.
    8/15/2014 11:51:59 AM
  • Over 17 - India 33/4 (Vijay 15, Dhoni 4)
India so far getting out when they middle it and runs when they edge it. Good over from Woakes, but Dhoni off the mark with a thick outside edge that bounces short of the slips and runs away for four. Nothing carrying to the cordon so far this morning.
    8/15/2014 11:54:58 AM
  • Over 18 - India 36/4 (Vijay 18, Dhoni 4)
First runs off Jordan as Vijay works him into the legside for a scampered two and picks up a single to long-leg to keep the strike.

[betting] India are on the ropes - again! They need a captain's innings now from MS Dhoni who is 7/4 to hit a half century. Check out the Sky Bet's latest odds and bet in-play
    8/15/2014 11:59:54 AM
  • Vijay c Root b Woakes 18

[wicket]Another one goes. Nice outswinger from Woakes finds Vijay's edge. Root is astonishingly close at a sort of fifth slip, fine gully position - so close that he's wearing a helmet - and he takes a really smart catch at the second attempt.
    8/15/2014 12:03:46 PM
  • Over 19 - India 36/5 (Dhoni 4, Binny 0)
England's four bowlers have all been excellent, but this is shamefully poor from India. They might actually be playing worse right now than England did in Australia last winter. Big call, I know.
    8/15/2014 12:05:59 PM
  • India's partnerships, such as they are...

    8/15/2014 12:09:17 PM
  • Over 20 - India 36/5 (Dhoni 4, Binny 0)
Third maiden in four overs for Jordan. Superb spell this; the staggering thing is that it in no way stands out over the efforts of the other three. Dhoni beaten all ends up by one that jags away past the outside edge.
    8/15/2014 12:10:11 PM
  • India now half-way to equalling the West Indies record 28 ducks in a series (v Aus in 2000/01)
  • Over 21 - India 38/5 (Dhoni 5, Binny 1)
Dhoni middles one off his toes and it hits short-leg Sam Robson on the shin. Too many leg parts in that sentence. Anyway, had Robson somehow contrived to catch that, I think Dhoni and India would have just packed up and gone home. Give the whole thing up as a bad job.
    8/15/2014 12:14:07 PM
  • Woakes celebrates Vijay's downfall...

    8/15/2014 12:16:31 PM
  • Over 22 - India 39/5 (Dhoni 5, Binny 1)
India have lost their last 35 wickets for just 530 runs, at an average of 15.14 runs per dismissal.
    8/15/2014 12:18:20 PM
  • Over 23 - India 39/5 (Dhoni 5, Binny 1)
Another maiden over, from Woakes this time. He and Jordan doing a superb job of backing up Anderson and Broad. There's been absolutely no let-up from the bowlers, and no respite for the batsmen. England utterly faultless in this session.
    8/15/2014 12:22:43 PM
  • Over 24 - India 43/5 (Dhoni 6, Binny 4)
Nice shot from Binny, driving Jordan through the covers and scampering three runs as Moeen Ali does good work to slide and flick the ball back inside the rope.
    8/15/2014 12:27:54 PM
  • Over 25 - India 43/5 (Dhoni 6, Binny 4)
Another outside edge bounces well short of Ballance at third slip. If the edges were carrying, India could have been bowled out this morning.
    8/15/2014 12:30:56 PM
  • Lunch - India 43/5
[lunch]Stunning session for England, but another miserable performance with the bat from India. Salvaging this match and series already looking a forlorn hope for Dhoni's men.
    8/15/2014 12:32:49 PM
  • [andrewstrauss] It was an excellent toss to win – I think the pitch did more than we expected it to. But having said that I think India look resigned to their fate – their body language looks very poor and there were some poor shots. I thought this was their worst session of the tour so far. It was a brilliant session for England. They'll be delighted."

  • Over 26 - India 43/5 (Dhoni 6, Binny 4)
Binny starts off very correct in defence against Broad but soon loses patience and has a big swish at fresh air outside his off-stump.
    8/15/2014 1:16:58 PM
  • Over 27 - India 43/5 (Dhoni 6, Binny 4)
Anderson also back into the attack after lunch, Cook going back to his trump pairing. The ball is seaming around quite a bit as Dhoni survives another maiden.
