England v India - Fifth Test

The Oval

    Over 54 - England 176-1 (Cook 70, Ballance 53)
Aaron is getting the ball to tail in nicely to the left-handers from round the wicket and almost forces Cook to drag a drive back on to his stumps. Instead, he nabs a single. India building some pressure...
    8/16/2014 1:14:11 PM

Go to the top of the class, Mr Cook.

    8/16/2014 1:15:40 PM
    Over 55 - England 179-1 (Cook 71, Ballance 55) [dropped-catch]
Drop! Another life for Cook! This one slightly tougher but Rahane, standing at first slip, got a hand to it after Cook was late on his cut shot off Ashwin. Dropped on 65 & 70, surely Cook is destined to make a century now??
    8/16/2014 1:18:21 PM
    Over 56 - England 182-1 (Cook 74, Ballance 55)
Cook comes forward and jabs Aaron for two down the ground and then works a full ball off middle and off through midwicket for a single. Cook struggling a little here and could do with a spell at the non strikers' end

    Over 57 - England 187-1 (Cook 75, Ballance 59)
Ashwin tries to sneak another over through quickly but Ballance dispatches the final delivery through extra cover with aplomb to find the fence
    8/16/2014 1:26:12 PM

Cook ct Vijay bld Aaron 79 [wicket]

Third time lucky for India as Vijay this time clings on at first slip to send England's captain on his way and hand Aaron a deserved wicket
    8/16/2014 1:27:31 PM
[andrewstrauss] It was a curious innings from Cook. Although he scored 79 it was one of those innings where you wonder if you are in better or worse nick at the end of it. A century is proving very difficult to come by for him.

    Over 78 - England 257-5 (Root 18, Buttler 14)
Ashwin and Binny bowling well in tandem here and keeping the scoring rate down with the second new ball imminent. Just a Root single to report off the latter, and a strangled lbw appeal on Buttler. Sliding down

    8/16/2014 3:21:05 PM
    Over 79 - England 260-5 (Root 21, Buttler 14)
Root whips Ashwin for two through square-leg and then nudges one into the covers to extend England's lead to 112. Binny to bowl the final over before India take the new ball, you'd think?
    8/16/2014 3:24:26 PM
    Over 80 - England 265-5 (Root 26, Buttler 14)
Lovely batting from Root, who just opens the face of the bat and places his drive through the covers for four - his first of the innings. He adds a single to keep strike. India take the new ball
    8/16/2014 3:27:23 PM
    Over 81 - England 268-5 (Root 29, Buttler 14)
Root is enjoying this bouncy Oval pitch and rocks back and works Kumar for three through midwicket off the first delivery with the second new nut. England's lead up to 120

    Over 20 - India 53-5 (Kohli 17, Binny 6)
Binny likes to play his shots and drives Broad powerfully back past mid-off for an eye-catching boundary. India may as well go down swinging here, the position they find themselves in - still 285 runs behind - is about as bleak as it gets
    8/17/2014 2:34:48 PM
    Over 21 - India 54-5 (Kohli 18, Binny 6)
Woakes is just too straight this over and Kohli works the final ball of the over to long leg for a single. A reminder that tea will be take at 4.40pm due to the rain break we had before, during and after lunch
    8/17/2014 2:38:47 PM
    Over 22 - India 55-5 (Kohli 19, Binny 6)
Jordan replaces Broad (1-22) and almost picks up the wicket of Kohli when he clips the ball high off his hip just short of Moeen, running in from fine leg. Just that single off Jordan's opening over and drinks are called

    Over 23 - India 62-5 (Kohli 20, Binny 12) [dropped-catch]
Drop! Kohli laces a drive on the up back at Woakes, who can't cling in to the low chance on his follow-through. Tough, but he got his hands there and you've seen them taken... Binny then receives some luck when an inside edge narrowly evades leg stump and brings him two. A more assured end to the over, though, as Binny drives through the covers for four
    8/17/2014 2:49:48 PM

Ashwin ct Bell bld Jordan 7 [wicket]

England closing in! Ashwin joins the procession when edging Jordan into the cordon, Ballance parries and Bell bails out his buddy by mopping up!
    8/17/2014 2:52:45 PM
    Over 24 - India 66-6 (Binny 12, Ashwin 4)
Kohli paid the penalty for not playing straight and England's catching in the slips has been exemplary. Ashwin makes a confident start to his innings, driving Jordan back down the ground for four to get up and running
    8/17/2014 2:55:14 PM
@cpfcpatriot : @BumbleCricket Indian fans are quiet, Bumble?” Thought this was supposed to be 0-5
    Over 25 - India 70-6 (Binny 13, Ashwin 7)
Woakes has been really impressive in this Test match and twice beats Binny on the outside edge after Ashwin had driven for three more down the ground
    8/17/2014 3:00:08 PM
    70-7 .. Start the car

Kumar ct Bell bld Jordan 4 [wicket]

Straight in this time. A regulation edge from Kumar and Bell catches comfortable in front of his eyes at second slip
    8/17/2014 3:03:23 PM
Kohli's too talented a player not to thrive in the years ahead, but for the time being he's averaged 13 in 10 Test innings here
[mikeatherton] England have been irresistible from the moment that Joe Root started to flay India’s bowlers to all part. England are a team playing with utmost confidence now; it’s been a remarkable turnaround in three Tests. India have utterly disintegrated.

    Over 26 - India 74-8 (Binny 13, Aaron 0)
India are sinking without a trace here. It's been a swing and seam bowling masterclass from England and India are spiralling towards a heavy innings defeat

Jordan polishes off the innings with a nasty short ball which Ishant can only lob straight into Ali's hands
    8/17/2014 3:11:58 PM
    Over 27 - India 84-9 (Binny 18, Ishant 0)
What a day this has been for England! India have been trampled all over from start to finish and Jordan will now try and finish off the second innings inside 28 overs!
    8/17/2014 3:14:07 PM

Jordan - his three wickets have put England on the brink

    8/17/2014 3:15:31 PM
    Over 28 - India 93-9 (Binny 25, Ishant 2)
Binny treats the crowd to a rare piece of flamboyant Indian strokeplay with a sumptuous cover drive to the boundary. At 25 not out he is the top-scoring batsman in this atrocious innings
