England v India - Fifth Test

The Oval

  • Beefy's Verdict... with cameos from Boycott, Strauss and Hussain

    8/15/2014 1:25:50 PM
  • Over 28 - India 44/5 (Dhoni 6, Binny 5)
Binny again has a wild swing outside his off-stump and makes no contact against Broad before collecting the first run of the afternoon with a single into the leg side.
    8/15/2014 1:26:10 PM
  • Over 29 - India 44/5 (Dhoni 6, Binny 5)
Binny continues to live dangerously, fiddling around outside his off-stump. Anderson is bang on line in that over and is producing generous away movement to the right-hander.
    8/15/2014 1:29:03 PM
  • Over 30 - India 44/5 (Dhoni 6, Binny 5)
As he did at Old Trafford, Dhoni is happy to wear a few short balls from Broad on the body. Fourth maiden out of five overs since lunch.
    8/15/2014 1:34:23 PM
  • Binny c Cook b Anderson 5[wicket]

It was coming. Anderson's been moving it both ways to Binny since lunch and it's the outswinger that finally earns the wicket via a regulation edge to first slip.
    8/15/2014 1:36:10 PM
  • Over 31 - India 48/6 (Dhoni 6, Ashwin 4)
Ravichandran Ashwin joins Dhoni in the middle and he's off the mark with a boundary from his first ball. Not convincing though, inside edging a big Anderson inswinger to fine-leg.
    8/15/2014 1:40:25 PM
  • Over 32 - India 56/6 (Dhoni 14, Ashwin 4)
Dhoni starts an Indian counter-attack by twice driving full deliveries from Broad through the covers for four. He's not moving his feet but found the middle of the bat both times.
    8/15/2014 1:44:10 PM
  • Over 33 - India 60/6 (Dhoni 15, Ashwin 7)
Ashwin guides the ball for three on the off-side by opening his wrists. Anderson continues to move it either way at will, he needs five more wickets to equal Sir Ian Botham's England Test record of 383... Dhoni is saved from being lbw to an inswinger by a thin inside edge.
    8/15/2014 1:47:29 PM
  • Over 34 - India 61/6 (Dhoni 16, Ashwin 7)
Brief delay as a pigeon decides to park itself on the pitch... Single for Dhoni into the leg side before Ashwin is beaten driving at a full delivery from Broad that seamed away.
    8/15/2014 1:53:55 PM
  • Over 35 - India 65/6 (Dhoni 17, Ashwin 10)
Ashwin is looking to be positive whenever the ball is pitched full, driving for three runs off Anderson.
    8/15/2014 2:01:15 PM
  • Over 36 - India 68/6 (Dhoni 17, Ashwin 10)
Broad is threatening both edges; outswing and seam movement the other way. Ashwin pushes for two into the covers off the back foot and drives for a single in the same area from the next ball.
    8/15/2014 2:03:33 PM
  • .@jimmy9 has pulled two more clear off Moeen Ali, who has yet to bowl today. India 68-6. #EngvInd

  • Ashwin c Root b Woakes 13[wicket]

Woakes strikes in the first over of his spell, Ashwin edging a drive to Root at fourth slip. The batsman waited for the third umpire to confirm the catch, it was a low one, but the replays are conclusive and he's on his way.
    8/15/2014 2:08:00 PM
  • Over 37 - India 68/7 (Dhoni 17, Kumar 0)
Almost two wickets in two balls for Woakes, Bhuvneshwar Kumar edging short of Root in the same position. Wicket maiden nonetheless.
    8/15/2014 2:11:37 PM
  • Over 38 - India 73/7 (Dhoni 17, Kumar 4)
Kumar gets off the mark by carving a wide delivery from Broad over the packed slip cordon for four.
    8/15/2014 2:14:40 PM
  • Over 39 - India 79/7 (Dhoni 22, Kumar 5)
Dhoni crashes a cover-drive to the fence as Woakes overpitches. Almost a wicket from the final ball of the over as Woakes jags one back at Kumar, who manages to get a thick inside edge to the ball before it reaches the stumps.
    8/15/2014 2:19:01 PM
  • How come I can hear Beaky on the commentary but clearly see him on the wicket @BumbleCricket @SkyCricket @BeefyBotham

  • Kumar c Buttler b Jordan 5

[wicket]Kumar does well to reach a really wide delivery from Jordan and get the toe of the bat to the ball. Buttler tumbles across Cook at first slip to take the catch.
    8/15/2014 2:20:26 PM
  • Last test at the Oval, India 56-6 is it too early for @BeefyBotham shiraz?

  • Woakes claimed the wicket of Ashwin in the first over of his spell

    8/15/2014 2:23:19 PM
  • Over 40 - India 79/8 (Dhoni 22, Aaron 0)
Varun Aaron the new batsman, and he takes a painful blow on the arm from a good short ball to end a wicket-maiden for Jordan. England's 'back-up' seamers now have combined figures of 15-9-22-5.
    8/15/2014 2:26:24 PM
  • Chris Jordan's pitch map... varied but he does have 3-7! #EngvInd

  • Over 41 - India 83/8 (Dhoni 26, Aaron 0)
Dhoni flays Woakes over point for four, but can't get a single off the last ball of the over to keep the strike. Woakes stuffed it way down leg. Could easily have been called a wide.
    8/15/2014 2:31:21 PM
  • Over 42 - India 83/8 (Dhoni 26, Aaron 0)
Aaron plays and misses six times in the over, including one that misses the bails by 1mm according to Hawk-Eye. One that misses the bat by considerably more than that prompts bafflingly confident appeals from England and a puzzled shake of the head from Kumar Dharmasena.
    8/15/2014 2:36:22 PM
  • Over 43 - India 83/8 (Dhoni 26, Aaron 0)
Four dot balls from Woakes to start the over. Field comes in to try and prevent Dhoni getting a single. A short ball and a wide, full one do the trick.
    8/15/2014 2:39:27 PM
  • MS Dhoni - 26no off 79 balls - very much playing a lone hand

    8/15/2014 2:39:45 PM

    8/15/2014 2:44:20 PM
  • Over 44 - India 90/8 (Dhoni 32, Aaron 1)
Aaron gets a single from the first ball of Jordan's over, before Dhoni clips through midwicket for two (turning down an easy third). A cut through point brings four more.
    8/15/2014 2:44:57 PM
  • Aaron c&b Woakes 1

[wicket]Aaron gets a leading edge trying to work the ball to leg. Simple return catch for Woakes.
    8/15/2014 2:49:20 PM
  • Over 45 - India 90/9 (Dhoni 32, Ishant 0)
Ishant Sharma blocks out the last ball of the over. Over to Dhoni to try and get India to three-figures...
    8/15/2014 2:50:41 PM

  • England's seamers have made the most of helpful conditions at The Oval

    8/15/2014 2:54:40 PM
  • Over 46 - India 94/9 (Dhoni 36, Ishant 0)
Swing and a miss from Dhoni to start the over... or was it? A noise as the ball passed the bat is picked up on Snicko, but there's nothing on Hot Spot. Most importantly, England didn't appeal so it's irrelevant anyway. No decision for the umpire to make. Dhoni steers a full delivery behind point for four but can't get a single to keep the strike
    8/15/2014 2:55:20 PM
  • Over 47 - India 95/9 (Dhoni 36, Ishant 1)
Ishant takes a desperate single to get off strike. Would've been out by miles had Broad's throw from midwicket hit the target. But he misses. Dhoni unable to cash in, though, and another ball down the legside prevents a single from the last ball of the over. Ishant again exposed to the bowling.
    8/15/2014 3:00:42 PM
  • Over 48 - India 100/9 (Dhoni 40, Ishant 2)
Drop! First real blemish for England as Bell drops a relatively straightforward chance at second slip offered by Ishant. A single gets Dhoni back on strike, and India's skipper smashes one over the offside for four to bring up three figures for India.
    8/15/2014 3:05:01 PM
  • Over 49 - India 100/9 (Dhoni 40, Ishant 2)
Ishant prods, pokes, misses and edges his way through a maiden over from Woakes.
    8/15/2014 3:08:56 PM
  • With India nine down, tea can be delayed by up to 30mins - so the break will now be at 4.40pm, at the latest. #EngvInd
  • Over 50 - India 103/9 (Dhoni 43, Ishant 2)
Dhoni swats the fifth ball of the over through midwicket. Not timed, but will get three runs for that, which is a decent result. Huge appeal for lbw against Ishant to end the over. Full and straight enough from Jordan, but a big inside edge spotted by Dharmasena.
    8/15/2014 3:14:28 PM
  • Over 51 - India 113/9 (Dhoni 53, Ishant 2)
Dhoni bops Woakes down the ground for four, and then picks up two more runs through the offside to reach 49 not out. Turns down a single that would've got him to 50, but flicks the last ball of the over away for four more to reach the landmark. Scorecard looks a horrible mess anyway; would look worse still without the skipper's effort.
    8/15/2014 3:18:54 PM
  • MS Dhoni's wagon-wheel as he passes fifty. #EngvInd Top effort from the skipper.

  • Over 52 - India 113/9 (Dhoni 53, Ishant 2)
Ishant steers one to gully, where Root is in close with the helmet on again. Still doesn't carry.
    8/15/2014 3:23:23 PM
  • Over 53 - India 118/9 (Dhoni 58, Ishant 2)
Cook turns to Anderson to try and get this final wicket. This partnership just starting to irritate England. Dhoni biffs four down the ground and picks up a single from ball five. Anderson hoops the final ball of the over into Ishant's pads, but it's swinging too much and would've missed leg stump.
    8/15/2014 3:28:07 PM
  • Over 54 - India 124/9 (Dhoni 64, Ishant 2)
Four dot balls to start the over. Field then comes up, so Dhoni slams one over long-off for six.
    8/15/2014 3:32:45 PM
  • Over 55 - India 124/9 (Dhoni 64, Ishant 2)
Anderson swinging the ball this way and that, but Ishant manages to get either the middle of the bat or none of it on every ball.
    8/15/2014 3:36:44 PM
  • Over 56 - India 125/9 (Dhoni 65, Ishant 2)
Spin for the first time as Moeen Ali bowls the final ball before the tea interval. Tea's been delayed by 30 minutes for England to get this final wicket, but they've not been able to do it. Dhoni gets a single from the final ball of the session. He's launched quite a fightback for India from 90/9, but they are still in the soup.
    8/15/2014 3:41:05 PM
  • Tea - India 125/9
[tea]Excellent, intelligent batting from Dhoni aside, another superb session for England. What will please the management is the way Woakes and Jordan have played full parts in the rout.
