  • MORGAN ON CAPTAINCY
Alastair Cook's form has improved, but the debate continues as to whether he would benefit from a break. He's been a permanent fixture in the England side for eight years now. Sir Ian Botham has suggested Eoin Morgan as an able deputy to step in and lead the Test team in the short-term - and the Middlesex batsman has told Sky Sports News Radio it's something he'd definitely do.

  • Over 57 - India 129/9 (Dhoni 69, Ishant 2)
Anderson gets another go at Dhoni to open the evening session. There are 36 overs still scheduled today but at least a few will be lost as play will end at 7pm regardless. Dhoni carves a thick edge over the slips for four to finish Anderson's over.
    8/15/2014 4:07:14 PM
  • Over 58 - India 131/9 (Dhoni 69, Ishant 4)
Ishant continues to hang around, even earning himself a couple of runs with a wristy flick into the leg side as Broad drops short.
    8/15/2014 4:08:57 PM
  • Over 59 - India 137/9 (Dhoni 74, Ishant 5)
Dhoni goes aerial against Anderson, lifting a single over mid-off and then finding the boundary at mid-on. In between, Ishant steers a short ball just out of the reach of Robson at short-leg.
    8/15/2014 4:15:46 PM
  • Over 60 - India 139/9 (Dhoni 74, Ishant 7)
Ishant has looked comfortable since tea, working the final delivery of Broad's over for a couple into the leg side.

  • Over 61 - India 148/9 (Dhoni 82, Ishant 7)
Dhoni helps a short ball from Broad to the fine-leg boundary to complete a 50-run stand with Ishant from 92 balls. Dhoni adds another four later in Anderson's over, cut over backward point and then keeps the strike thanks to a bye down the leg side.

Dhoni's defiant innings comes to an end, helping a short ball straight into Woakes' hands at long-leg. India's captain has scored 55.4 per cent of his side's first-innings effort of 148 all out.

[ianbotham] You’ve got to fancy bowling on this pitch. The roller has been on and it will be a fraction quicker. India must make the most of the new ball – that’s what MS Dhoni will be telling his bowlers.

  • Over 1 - England 2/0 (Cook 1, Robson 1)
Kumar takes the first over with the new ball for India. He's immediately swinging it back into the left-handed Cook, who defends one just in front of short-leg before getting off the mark with a single to fine-leg. Robson also opens his account with a single off his pads to keep the strike.
    8/15/2014 4:38:16 PM
  • [injury]Worrying for India, Ishant is limping after the second ball of his opening over. He missed the defeats in Southampton and Manchester with an ankle injury... The groundstaff are coming out to do some work on the footmarks.
    8/15/2014 4:40:22 PM
  • He's going to carry on.
    8/15/2014 4:41:38 PM
  • Over 2 - England 2/0 (Cook 1, Robson 2)
Ishant completes his over without further incident, just a single for Robson - worked into the leg side - from it. He seems to be okay now.
    8/15/2014 4:45:53 PM
  • Over 3 - England 3/0 (Cook 1, Robson 2)
Robson, who might well be playing for his immediate Test future in this game, plays out a maiden from Kumar in defensive mode. The medium pacer is getting some good shape on his outswinger.
    8/15/2014 4:48:32 PM
  • Over 4 - England 4/0 (Cook 2, Robson 2)
Cook helps himself to a single off his pads. Ishant seems fine after that early scare, generating decent pace to sneak one past Robson's prod.

  • BENEDICT’S 200th TEST INVITATIONAL XI
Our stats man, Benedict, has come up with the following composite ‘team’ from the players who have played just one England Test on Sky across all the years…

Ian Ward, (captain - obviously!); Jason Gallian; Aftab Habib; Anthony McGrath; Matthew Maynard  (wk); Gavin Hamilton; Mike Watkinson; Eddie Hemmings; Phil Newport; Boyd Rankin; Darren Pattinson

    8/15/2014 4:54:02 PM
  • Over 5 - England 8/0 (Cook 3, Robson 5)
Kumar stifles an lbw appeal against Cook, probably swinging past the left-hander's leg stump. Hawkeye says that was umpire's call, pitched in line and was just clipping leg stump...Robson drives down the ground for three, hauled in just short of the rope.
    8/15/2014 4:58:02 PM
  • Over 6 - England 8/0 (Cook 3, Robson 7)
Ishant, who demolished England at Lord's in his most recent outing (although it seems a long time ago now), is working up some pace, he certainly adds an extra dimension to this Indian attack. Robson gets two runs via a thick inside edge.
    8/15/2014 5:01:05 PM
  • Over 7 - England 12/0 (Cook 5, Robson 7)
Cook forces through the covers for two off the back foot as Kumar drops just a touch short during an otherwise decent over of line and length
    8/15/2014 5:04:33 PM
  • Over 8 - England 12/0 (Cook 5, Robson 7)
Good maiden over from Ishant, twice going past Robson's outside edge.
    8/15/2014 5:10:35 PM
  • Over 9 - England 20/0 (Cook 12, Robson 7)
Eventful over. Cook clips Kumar through midwicket for four and cuts through point for two. But between those two he's hit on the pad in front of his stumps, and Kumar is aghast when the lbw shout is turned down. Live it looked like it may have pitched outside leg, but Hawk-Eye shows it pitched on leg stump and would've hit the inside of off stump. Let off for the England captain.
    8/15/2014 5:13:08 PM
  • LBW let-off for Cook on nine - Hawkeye shows second ball (blue) of Kumar's over pitched in line and would have hit. http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BvGHrh9IEAEbCzY.jpg

  • Over 10 - England 20/0 (Cook 12, Robson 7)
Maiden over from Ishant, who gets one to bounce from a good length and thud firmly into Cook's box. Sore. Cook gets through the rest of the over, and can have a quick check and a recount at DRINKS.
    8/15/2014 5:19:43 PM
  • Over 11 - England 24/0 (Cook 12, Robson 11)
Good shot from Robson to end the over, punching a drive between cover and mid-off as Kumar overpitches.
    8/15/2014 5:24:48 PM
  • Over 12 - England 30/0 (Cook 13, Robson 16)
Four more for Robson, but streakier this time as a genuine edge flies away wide of the slip cordon and down to the fence. Both England openers collect legside singles.
    8/15/2014 5:28:52 PM
  • Over 13 - England 39/0 (Cook 13, Robson 21)
Another lovely cover-drive brings Robson four. Got his head right over that, sniffing it out. Shot of the day. Kumar bungs one down the legside, and Dhoni can't gather it. Four byes. Big, hooping inswinger from Kumar is clipped to midwicket for a single.
    8/15/2014 5:32:46 PM
  • Over 14 - England 41/0 (Cook 13, Robson 23)
Robson tries to work Ishant into the legside but gets a leading edge that flashes past gully and brings two lucky runs. Tight leave from Robson to end the over, but the bails remain undisturbed on this occasion.
    8/15/2014 5:37:49 PM
  • Kumar appeals in vain for the wicket of Cook - but does scatter the pigeons

    8/15/2014 5:40:16 PM
  • Over 15 - England 48/0 (Cook 16, Robson 27)
Robson growing in confidence here. Another firm drive brings him four from the final ball of Aaron's first over.
    8/15/2014 5:43:09 PM
  • Over 16 - England 51/0 (Cook 19, Robson 27)
Bit of Binny for a few overs before the close. Gentle Medium Pace. Cook clips him away through the legside for a two and a single as England ease past 50 without loss. India lost six wickets getting there.
    8/15/2014 5:47:11 PM
  • Over 17 - England 54/0 (Cook 20, Robson 29)
Another delay for repairs to the bowler's footholds. Aaron's turned his ankle in delivery, which is no doubt sore, but it's getting ridiculous how much time is wasted with tish and fipsy on a typical Test match day. We've got eight minutes left to bowl the last nine overs today...
    8/15/2014 5:53:17 PM
  • Over 19 - England 62/0 (Cook 24, Robson 33)
Robson gets four off a thick inside edge that flashes past the stumps and down to the fence. Robson solidly blocks out the rest of the over to conclude a highly satisfactory day for England.
    8/15/2014 5:58:24 PM
  • And that's stumps, with Eng 62-0 (Cook 24no, Robson 33no) - they trail India by 86. Reaction to follow on SS2, plus today's podcast #EngvInd
  • Close - England 62/0, trailing by 86 runs
[close]As they have since the third Test, everything is going swimmingly for England. India's top order once again failed the examination on the first morning and, despite a superb counter-punching 82 from MS Dhoni, India mustered a woefully sub-par 148 all out. Cook and Robson have had their moments of good fortune, but have already wiped out a good chunk of those India runs without any loss.
