    8/16/2014 3:21:05 PM
  • Over 79 - England 260-5 (Root 21, Buttler 14)
Root whips Ashwin for two through square-leg and then nudges one into the covers to extend England's lead to 112. Binny to bowl the final over before India take the new ball, you'd think?
    8/16/2014 3:24:26 PM
  • Over 80 - England 265-5 (Root 26, Buttler 14)
Lovely batting from Root, who just opens the face of the bat and places his drive through the covers for four - his first of the innings. He adds a single to keep strike. India take the new ball
    8/16/2014 3:27:23 PM
  • Over 81 - England 268-5 (Root 29, Buttler 14)
Root is enjoying this bouncy Oval pitch and rocks back and works Kumar for three through midwicket off the first delivery with the second new nut. England's lead up to 120
    8/16/2014 3:32:25 PM
  • Over 82 - England 277-5 (Root 34, Buttler 18)
Aaron serves up a juicy leg-stump half-volley which Root feasts on, clipping hard through square-leg for four. Root then survives two strangled lbw appeals - he got bat on both - and Buttler then ends the over with an edge all along the floor which beats third slip and races to the fence. Expensive, but threatening over from Aaron

  • [shanewarne] You sense that if India don’t win this session they’re in a bit of trouble. They are already a long way behind in this Test but if they can knock England over for another 30-40 runs with this new ball and bat big, they may be able to get a 240-250 lead – then it’s game on.

    8/16/2014 3:39:06 PM
  • Over 83 - England 279-5 (Root 36, Buttler 18)
Root is farming most of the strike against this second new ball and times two more through wide long-on to bring up the 50 partnership from 81 balls and extend England's lead to 131
    8/16/2014 3:42:13 PM
  • Runs coming at a good rate for Root & Buttler...

    8/16/2014 3:42:37 PM
  • Over 84 - England 280-5 (Root 36, Buttler 19)
Buttler starts the over with a single off Aaron and Root is then beaten lunging at a cover drive - his first false shot of the innings. You sense England are just looking to up the ante in this final session and bat India out of the series
    8/16/2014 3:45:49 PM
  • Over 85 - England 285-5 (Root 36, Buttler 24)
Shot! Just a fraction short and a fraction wide and Buttler cuts Kumar crisply through backward point to find the boundary. A single follows and these two are doing a fine job for England, who lead by 137
    8/16/2014 3:50:09 PM
  • Over 86 - England 289-5 (Root 36, Buttler 28)
Shot! Even better from Buttler. This time it's Aaron who drops short and Buttler is on to it in a flash, cutting hard through point for four more. Runs flowing as India begin to tire
    8/16/2014 3:54:18 PM
  • Buttler - bedding in at the crease nicely...

    8/16/2014 3:57:55 PM
  • Over 87 - England 289-5 (Root 36, Buttler 28)
Kumar's gentle away swingers result in a welcome maiden for India. Ishant will replace Aaron at the Pavilion End
    8/16/2014 3:58:06 PM
  • Over 88 - England 289-5 (Root 36, Buttler 28)
Very good comeback over from Ishant, who forces Root into his most solid defence. Maiden. 21 overs left in the day. England lead by 141
    8/16/2014 4:02:20 PM
  • Over 89 - England 291-5 (Root 38, Buttler 28)
Root ends a run of 19 successive dot balls with a drive off the back foot which brings him two to end the over. Pitch still looks a belter...
    8/16/2014 4:07:06 PM
  • Over 90 - England 296-5 (Root 38, Buttler 33)
Buttler pounces on a wide half-volley from Ishant and drives back past Binny at mid-off and away for four. Lovely shot, average effort from Binny in the field. A single takes England's lead to 148
    8/16/2014 4:11:39 PM
  • Over 91 - England 303-5 (Root 38, Buttler 40)
Buttler brings up the England 300 with another boundary down the ground off Kumar and then overtakes Root with a well-timed push through the covers for three. Drinks called. India desperately need some inspiration in this final hour
    8/16/2014 4:16:11 PM
  • 200th TEST MEMORIES... it's over to ANDREW STRAUSS during drinks, for his recollections of a very special Ashes Test...

    8/16/2014 4:18:58 PM
  • Over 92 - England 304-5 (Root 38, Buttler 41)
A misfield allows Buttler to add a single off the first ball back after the drinks break. India then adopt a short-ball strategy against Root, who ducks and weaves well to see out the over. Plenty of pace and fire from Ishant, whose effort cannot be questioned
    8/16/2014 4:24:44 PM
  • Over 93 - England 309-5 (Root 38, Buttler 45)
Edge...four! Kumar brings Buttler forward and an away singer catches his edge...only for the ball to pierce the only gap in the cordon and sail away for four. India have not had much luck today. England lead by 161
    8/16/2014 4:29:07 PM
  • Buttler ct Ashwin bld Ishant 45 [wicket]

Ishant gets his reward when Buttler clips straight to Ashwin at short midwicket. Sharp catch and a deserved wicket
    8/16/2014 4:36:18 PM
  • Over 94 - England 309-6 (Root 38, Woakes 0)
Buttler was lucky to have survived a strong lbw appeal earlier in the over and India had been striving hard for that wicket, which ends a 80-run partnership and denies Buttler a third successive 50. Woakes joins Root in the middle and sees out the final two balls of the over
    8/16/2014 4:36:37 PM
  • [nasserhussain] It was good positioning by Dhoni, having Ashwin there. Sharma deserved that wicket – he’s worked hard.

    8/16/2014 4:36:49 PM
  • Woakes ct Dhoni bld Kumar 0 [wicket]

Woakes cannot believe his luck as he tickles Kumar down the leg-side and Dhoni takes a diving catch
    8/16/2014 4:40:18 PM
  • Over 95 - England 318-7 (Root 47, Jordan 0)
A first wicket in the match for Kumar, who had been hooked for six by Root earlier in the over and then driven for three. Woakes was unlucky to tickle fine enough to find Dhoni and his departure brings Jordan to the middle
    8/16/2014 4:43:49 PM
  • Over 96 - England 327-7 (Root 53, Jordan 3) [50]
50 for Root! He sees an Ishant short ball coming at the start of the over and pulls for three to bring up his eighth Test 50. The England No 5 is enjoying somewhat of a purple patch this summer. Jordan then adds three through midwicket to get up and running and Root adds a third three of the over with a forceful push through extra cover. The lead is up to 179
    8/16/2014 4:48:39 PM
  • Over 97 - England 332-7 (Root 54, Jordan 7)
Jordan looks keen to play his shots and pulls Kumar through square-leg for his first boundary. Ishant is quick enough to trouble England with that length on this pitch, Kumar is not. The lead is 184
    8/16/2014 4:53:47 PM
  • Over 98 - England 342-7 (Root 64, Jordan 7)
A very productive over for England, 10 runs off it, all to Root. Two boundaries for the right-handed Yorkie, one edged just short of the slips and the next driven delightfully off the back foot through extra cover. An overthrow hands England a bonus run after a sharp single
    8/16/2014 4:58:34 PM
  • Root - has rattled on to 64 from 103 deliveries

    8/16/2014 4:59:49 PM
  • Over 99 - England 347-7 (Root 68, Jordan 7)
Very surprising to see India have no cover sweeper for Root, who is so strong in that area. He stands up tall and punches Aaron through that vacant region for a boundary to take England's lead up to 199
    8/16/2014 5:04:08 PM
  • Over 100 - England 352-7 (Root 70, Jordan 9)
Root and Jordan are running the India fielders ragged late in the day with quick singles. Four taken off Binny, who also delivered a front-foot no-ball. England's lead is above 200 and Root moves into the 70s
    8/16/2014 5:08:50 PM
  • Over 101 - England 361-7 (Root 75, Jordan 12)
Aaron homes a full delivery in on middle and leg stump but Jordan waits for it and clips wide of long-on to add three more. England's batting depth frustrating India here. Root is back on strike after those three runs and opens the face of the bat on a short delivery to find the third man boundary before adding a single to deep midwicket. England in total command at the Kennington Oval, leading by 213
    8/16/2014 5:14:17 PM
  • Over 102 - England 370-7 (Root 80, Jordan 16)
The runs continue to flow for England at the end of the day. Root expertly steers Binny for a boundary through third man and Jordan then edges straight through the gap between second and fourth slip. The bowler cannot believe it! The lead is 222
    8/16/2014 5:19:22 PM
  • Over 103 - England 371-7 (Root 81, Jordan 16)
A quieter over here, just a Root single to report. Play will close at 6.30pm
    8/16/2014 5:22:34 PM
  • Over 104 - England 382-7 (Root 90, Jordan 18)
Root is middling everything now and, whisper it quietly, could reach 100 tonight.... He moves into the 90s by dispatching Binny for two boundaries, one clipped through midwicket, the next driven gloriously back through mid-on. Another Jordan edge then drops short of the slip cordon and he comes back for two. India delay proceedings and Ashwin is back on for probably the last over of the day
    8/16/2014 5:27:55 PM
  • Over 105 - England 385-7 (Root 92, Jordan 19)
Root takes a single first ball to dash any hopes of a century tonight. He won't be bothered though and can sleep well in the knowledge that England are in complete control of this match. Jordan adds a single off the penultimate ball of the day and Root nudges to deep midwicket to end a dominant day for England
    8/16/2014 5:32:39 PM
  • Day two close [close]
Another great day for England in this series. Half-centuries for Cook (79), Ballance (64) and Root (92*), who is closing in on a fifth Test century, have helped England open up a lead of 237 after two days. They will now have one eye on wrapping this up tomorrow. Join me then!
    8/16/2014 5:34:50 PM
