WEATHER [rain]
The forecast is actually quite good for today but an early shower has arrived in the North West and the covers are on in the middle. Hopefully a passing shower...

TRAM MAN
The biggest revelation this morning is that Nasser got the tram in this morning. Whether he paid or not, well...

Over 26 - India 63/5 (Dhoni 25, Jadeja 0)
Jordan starts after lunch. He starts well, too. It's a maiden to India's skipper, with the ball shaping away towards the well-packed slip region. Anderson is going to bowl at the other end - Cook not keen to have his two less-experienced seamers working away at the same time.
8/7/2014 1:16:09 PM
Anderson v Jadeja and it's a knockout for the bowler. It's full, straight and swinging in, meaning the left-hander can't afford to miss it. He does, and therefore HAS to go lbw without troubling the scorers.

Over 27 - India 66/6 (Dhoni 25, Ashwin 3)
Ravi Ashwin has been picked mainly for his bowling. He has a Test average with the bat of nearly 40, yes, but he now needs to help try and drag India up towards three figures and beyond. Probably not quite what he expected this morning when his skipper won the toss. Anyways, he's off the mark with a firm push through point for two, then keeps the strike with a single nudged down to the man at backward square leg.

Over 12 - England 34/1 (Cook 17, Ballance 9)
Change to the attack - Varun Aaron comes on for his first bowl of the series. He's got some wheels - high 80mph on the speed gun and plenty of carry through to wicket-keeper Dhoni. He's quick enough with the fourth delivery of the over to beat Cook for pace, the England captain late to get his bat down on one pitched right up outside off stick. Only run conceded in the over comes courtesy of a wide.
8/7/2014 4:14:59 PM
Over 13 - England 36/1 (Cook 17, Ballance 9)
Couple of leg byes aid England's cause, the ball deflecting off Ballance's hip when it was a little dubious if he was ever really offering a shot. Little delay at the end of the over as the ground staff are on to do a bit of work to the foot holes. There's some digging, some sweeping, then off go the two workers.
8/7/2014 4:19:51 PM
Cook gone! And to a short ball as well! Aaron bangs one in, England's captain takes it on and then deposits his hook shot straight out to Pankaj at deep backward square leg. The fielder didn't have to move from his original spot.

BOUNCED OUT [andrewstrauss]
"There was extra bounce on the short ball and Cook wasn't able to control the shot and it was a casual catch from Pankaj."
8/7/2014 4:24:30 PM
Over 14 - England 40/2 (Ballance 9, Bell 4)
Err, interesting start from Bell. Having seen Cook caught out hooking, the right-hander tries to do exactly the same when he has a go at another Aaron short ball. Next up he plays and misses outside off, beaten for pace as much as anything else. Eventually he manages to get bat on ball, finishing up with a flick through the gap at square leg for four. Good over from Aaron though - he's got some gas and offers India's attack something extra.
8/7/2014 4:26:09 PM
Over 15 - England 40/2 (Ballance 9, Bell 4)
Maiden from Kumar - he's now through a seven-over spell and has taken 1-13. Ballance tries to leave alone the final delivery at the last second, resulting in him getting an under-edge that fortunately runs away safely towards point.
8/7/2014 4:30:14 PM
Over 16 - England 42/2 (Ballance 9, Bell 5)
Bell does well to get his bat down in time to one full and straight from Aaron - bowler and the slip cordon all were ready to launch an appeal had the batsman not got any wood on that. The over is extended by one ball when Aaron sends something so wide that Ballance would not have been able to hit it with the proverbial barge pole.
8/7/2014 4:34:55 PM
Over 23 - England 79/2 (Ballance 22, Bell 29)
Pankaj STILL waiting for that maiden Test wicket. He's now sent down over 350 deliveries without one. It's a maiden to Ballance
8/7/2014 5:08:57 PM
Over 24 - England 80/2 (Ballance 22, Bell 30)
Turn for Ashwin - he gets one to lift and bounce bowling to Ballance, though then follows that up with one far too full that can be driven comfortably away for a single. England now behind by 71 runs. Still should have another 19 overs today, but 7pm is the cut-off time tonight.
8/7/2014 5:11:56 PM
Over 25 - England 89/2 (Ballance 31, Bell 30)
Another pair of sumptuous boundaries from Ballance. The first with a flick through mid-wicket that beats Gambhir to the boundary rope, the second with a classical cover drive that leaves no fielder wondering if it will go all the way to the rope. England motoring along now and this is going to be an extended session in the field for India. The deficit could nearly be gone by stumps if these two continue to bloom. Stand now worth 50, too.
8/7/2014 5:17:58 PM
Over 26 - England 90/2 (Ballance 31, Bell 31)
A Bell single takes the difference between the teams down to 62. Ashwin has bowled better, a more attacking line, when he's had Ballance in his sights.

KING OF SWING
Talking of swing bowlers... [benedictbermange]
"James Anderson has now bowled more deliveries (21,920) than any other England bowler in Test cricket, having edged past Derek Underwood on the first day."

RAIN RETURNS [rain]
Any hopes the groundstaff may have had of starting what is likely to be a lengthy mopping up process have been dashed by the rain, which has returned over Old Trafford

TEA TAKEN
[tea]Tea has been taken during this lengthy rain delay and we will now wait on the umpires' verdict following the pitch inspection at 4.30pm.
