England v India - Fourth Test

Live from Old Trafford

  • Cries of 'Rooooooot' around @EmiratesOT as he and Buttler bring up the 50 partnership. Eng 231-6 - lead of 79

  • Over 68 - England 232/6 (Root 43, Buttler 22)
Root goes back and cuts off his own stumps for four.
Good job he hit that, otherwise it was all over. Instead he's now into the 40s and England's advantage is at 80. Dhoni has reacted to the flow of runs after lunch by bringing Aaron on to replace Pankaj.

  • Over 69 - England 233/6 (Root 44, Buttler 22)
Root denied the returning Aaron a maiden by getting a single into the leg-side off the last ball.
Ground staff are looks like we might be set for a break in play. You know it's bad when they're putting on rain gear
    8/8/2014 1:08:57 PM
  • Over 70 - England 234/6 (Root 45, Buttler 22)
    And here comes the rain.
Buttler sees out the final few deliveries of the Jadeja over knowing now is no time to get out. The umpires are having a look towards the heavens. England's lead is at 82 and now umbrellas are springing up in the crowd. Looks like we are going to start the next over, though.
    8/8/2014 1:10:20 PM
  • Over 71 - England 237/6 (Root 48, Buttler 22)
Root did talk to umpire Erasmus about the conditions but his word in the ear of the official can't persuade him to take the players from the field.
Good job, too. Otherwise we'd have missed a moment of hilarity when India make a mess of backing up a throw into the bowler's end. Kohli goes down in instalments, allowing the ball to scoot past him and let England pick up an extra run. Buttler didn't enjoy the short ball he had to take on the body, though. Things like that make umpires twitchy in such conditions.
    8/8/2014 1:15:10 PM
Enough is enough for Mr Tucker.
He calls for the covers to come on and the players are heading off. England's sixth-wicket pair have added 67 and the lead is now 85. Rain coming down steadily and there's little wind to shift it in a hurry. Expecting a very heavy shower to hit Old Trafford.

  • The covers are on. Our radar suggests it could just be a passing shower

  • Outfield at Old Trafford rapidly turning into a lake.
  • Bumble at training: Something to keep you entertained during the rain delay

[rain]The shower seems to have passed but it has left large areas of standing water on the outfield. We will now get a good sense of how effective the drainage system at Emirates Old Trafford is because there will have to be an extensive clean-up job before we can get any play.
    8/8/2014 1:49:18 PM
[rain]But any thoughts of a clean-up job are on hold as the rain is actually coming down again. This could be a long one...

Any hopes the groundstaff may have had of starting what is likely to be a lengthy mopping up process have been dashed by the rain, which has returned over Old Trafford

  • SUNSHINE [sunny]
The weather is actually set fair at the moment and the outfield does not look too bad except for a particularly problematic area down near the boundary which still looks like it will take some time to clean up.

  • Latest inspection delayed due to wet outfield
The latest news is that that the scheduled inspection will not take place at 5pm, an understandable decision as no play is feasible with this patch of standing water still there.

  • Further inspection at 5.40pm
There is going to be a final pitch inspection at 5.40pm but in all honesty that corner down by boundary is still looking very iffy. If play does not resume by 6pm then it will be abandoned for the day.
    8/8/2014 4:25:28 PM
  • Don't think there will be any more play today.... Must be blocked drains below the media stand...shame for the fans & OT !!
That corner is still in no fit state for play and the umpires have called things off.
