Over 1 - England 2-0 (Cook 1, Robson 1)
We'll find out just how hard this pitch is to bat on now with England replying to India's 295ao. These conditions should suit India's seamers and Kumar is bang on the money in his opening over. Cook tucks a single to midwicket to get off the mark and Robson is then relieved to see an outside edge drop just short of third slip. He played that nicely, with soft hands, to ensure it dropped short. The Middlesex opener then gets off the mark with a single to square-leg. Big test this for England's openers...7/18/2014 10:22:57 AM -

Over 2 - England 2-0 (Cook 1, Robson 1)
Shami is a touch too short to Robson in his opening over. Plenty of seam movement on offer, but at that length Robson is happy to watch the ball sail by. Maiden7/18/2014 10:25:17 AM -

Over 3 - England 2-0 (Cook 1, Robson 1)
After five probing inswingers aimed at Cook's pads and stumps, Kumar throws in an away swinger to end the over, but Cook is on his mettle and keeps it out. Andrew Strauss is impressed with his former opening partner's balance in the early stages of what is an important innings for both player and country. Maiden7/18/2014 10:29:10 AM -
Over 4 - England 7-0 (Cook 5, Robson 2)
Robson breaks a run of 14 dot balls with a single backward of square and then Shami, attacking Cook's stumps, is guilty of bowling too straight to the left-hander, who whips him fine for the first boundary of the innings. I do like a left/right hand opening combo...7/18/2014 10:33:07 AM -
Over 5 - England 7-0 (Cook 5, Robson 2)
Kumar, just nibbling the ball away from Robson at around 80mph, has settled into a nice rhythm but Robson remains solid on his home patch and confidently plays out another maiden7/18/2014 10:37:19 AM -
Over 24 - England 51-2 (Ballance 7, Bell 11)Bell and Ballance manage to dally enough between deliveries to make sure this is the final over of the session. A good one for India despite the first 10th-wicket failure of the series.7/18/2014 12:00:58 PM

Lunch: England 51-2, trail by 244 runs[lunch]Two poor shots from England's openers. Robson's optimistic drive was dreadful, but the big talking point will once again be the skipper. One nibble and you're nobbled as he fatally followed one outside the off stump from the excellent Kumar.7/18/2014 12:02:35 PM

[nasserhussain] It’s a good cricket pitch, you can bat on it, but there’s still plenty in it for the seamers. But the major talking point is the form of Cook.”

Over 25 - England 52-2 (Ballance 7, Bell 12)
Not sure what the pitch had for lunch but it's just started to misbehave. After watching a short ball from Ishant die on its way through to Dhoni, Bell then sees a full delivery pop up and almost catch his glove. Not encouraging for the team who will have to bat on this pitch last... In between the uneven bounce Bell is relieved to get an inside edge on to his pad. If he hadn't, England would be three down7/18/2014 12:45:52 PM -

Over 26 - England 55-2 (Ballance 7, Bell 15)
Bell has the crowd purring with a dreamy cover drive off Kumar but he doesn't time it as well as he'd have liked and picks up three instead of four, the only runs off the over7/18/2014 12:50:54 PM -
Over 27 - England 56-2 (Ballance 7, Bell 16)
Ishant is causing Bell a fair amount of discomfort after lunch and gets the ball to seam past his inside edge from back of a length, prompting oohs and aahs from behind the wicket. Another rising delivery from back of a length then forces Bell to get up on his toes and a thick inside edge, not far away from short-leg, brings him one to end the over7/18/2014 12:54:48 PM -
Over 28 - England 56-2 (Ballance 7, Bell 16)
Bell has hogged the strike since the lunch break, allowing Ballance to face just four balls this session. The Warwickshire man plays out a maiden from Kumar7/18/2014 12:57:34 PM -

Over 29 - England 63-2 (Ballance 10, Bell 16)
A poor over from Ishant, who, perhaps put off by the prospect of bowling to a left-hander, is too straight to Ballance and concedes four leg-byes for his team before Ballance helps himself to three more7/18/2014 1:03:48 PM -
Over 30 - England 68-2 (Ballance 15, Bell 16)
Four! Fine improvisation from Ballance, who helps a short ball from Kumar over the slip cordon and away for his first boundary. A lovely uppercut from the left-hander, who adds a single to retain strike7/18/2014 1:06:27 PM -
Over 31 - England 70-2 (Ballance 16, Bell 16)
Ballance, who has already survived one strong lbw shout, has to be careful as he's walking a long way across his stumps. His eye is good enough at the moment, though, and he works a single to leg. If he'd missed that, well, India would be celebrating another wicket7/18/2014 1:11:43 PM -
[nasserhussain] Bell got out in the last Test trying to leave the ball. This one nipped back down the slope and got him on the glove. So there’s still enough left in this pitch. Kumar is an excellent cricketer. He’s having a wonderful tour.”
7/18/2014 1:15:14 PM -
Over 32 - England 73-3 (Ballance 16, Root 3)
That's twice in as many matches that Bell has been out attempting to leave the ball. In his defence, he didn't do a lot wrong, the delivery just got big on him and it was a clever piece of bowling from Kumar. Root is the new man and gets off the mark with a confident clip through midwicket for three7/18/2014 1:17:29 PM -
Over 33 - England 73-3 (Ballance 16, Root 3)

Over 34 - England 73-3 (Ballance 16, Root 3)
Ballance and Root have fine records at Lord's. Root already has scores of 200*, 180, and 71 at the Home of Cricket, while Ballance scored 104* on his last Test outing here, against Sri Lanka earlier in the summer. Meanwhile, Ballance sees out a maiden to the impressive Kumar7/18/2014 1:26:17 PM -

Over 49 - England 119-4 (Ballance 47, Moeen 4)Another single for Ballance, who continues to prove beyond all doubt that drunken shirtlessness is in fact the very ideal preparation for a Test match, before Moeen makes no contact with an attempt to repeat the Mo mow with which he started his innings.7/18/2014 2:29:50 PM
