England v India, Second Test

Live from Lord's

  • Over 85 - England 212-8 (Broad 4, Plunkett 3)
Jadeja is not messing about and rattles off six more deliveries before I get chance to catch breath. Two singles for Broad, one for Plunkett. England rebuilding...
    7/21/2014 1:27:40 PM
[betting] England are now out to 8/1 to snatch and unlikely victory with India 1/12 and the draw 33/1. Bet in-play
    7/21/2014 1:28:41 PM
  • WICKET! Sharma strikes again. Stuart Broad is the man to go, departing for 8. India need one wicket: #EngvInd

  • Anderson run out (Jadeja) 2 [wicket]

India win by 95 runs! A farcial end to a dismal day for England. A mix-up between Anderson and Plunkett sees Jimmy run out by a direct-hit from Jadeja, who else?, and India take a 1-0 series lead at Lord's!

  • Time to file some copy...

    7/21/2014 1:35:16 PM
  • Over 86 - England 216-9 (Plunkett 3, Anderson 0)
India on the brink here at Lord's and their fans are loving it! Ishant has 7-71 and Anderson walks to the crease needing to pull off a miracle for his team. England have been blown away since lunch
    7/21/2014 1:35:20 PM
  • England battered by India's short ball !
  • Over 87 - England 219-9 (Plunkett 4, Anderson 1)
Appeal! Not out! I thought that was it. Plunkett pinned on the pad sweeping Jadeja but Dharmasena lets him off. Replays show the impact was 'umpires call' on off stump. England hanging on
    7/21/2014 1:38:49 PM
  • Over 88 - England 222-9 (Plunkett 6, Anderson 2)
Still in a state of disbelief after that brainless passage of batting from England. Bounced out by Mitchell Johnson on quick pitches in Australia is one thing, Ishant Sharma on a day five pitch at Lord's another! Three further singles added against the Indian assassin this over. England need 97 more...
    7/21/2014 1:44:18 PM
  • Enough is enough we have to change things & move on simply not good enough (same as my school reports ) Captain cannot go on he's scrambled!
  • India win the second test! Anderson departs for two, a sorry day for England comes to an end: #EngvInd

  • Bumble and Rahul hail India's victory.

    7/21/2014 1:50:51 PM
  • India lead series 1-0 [close]
Ishant (7-74) was quite excellent but England will need to review how they played him and the short ball as the barrage won't end today. The next stop is the Ageas Bowl, on Sunday, where England will need to regroup quickly. Stay here for reports and reaction from Lord's...
    7/21/2014 1:51:09 PM
  • Horrific hour for Eng. India bullied & bounced them out. Remember Eng won the toss on the greenest pitch ever & blew it, changes needed !!
  • Here is how the rest of the series looks. India have a 1 - 0 lead: #EngvInd :

  • [andrewstrauss] A shambolic end to a shambolic Test match for England!

    7/21/2014 1:53:22 PM
  • Outstanding performance by Ishant ! Well played India !!
  • YOUR TWEETS - on England's defeat

    7/21/2014 1:55:23 PM
[davidlloyd] The runs have dried up. He looks absolutely battered. I know that he is going to get plenty of support from people around him but he may take it out of their hands. We’ll have to wait and see.

    7/21/2014 1:56:23 PM
  • [andrewstrauss] England will be bitterly disappointed because it was such an obvious plan. The irony of it all is we’ve talked all along about Sri Lanka and India being dodgy against the short ball but it has been England’s undoing.

    7/21/2014 1:58:50 PM
  • How it all unfolded for England...

    7/21/2014 2:00:34 PM
  • Alastair Cook is talking with Michael Atherton. Sky Sports 2 now: #EngvInd :

"It’s a tough defeat, especially here at Lord’s. We’ve got to give India a lot of credit for the way they played these five days, they’ve out-bowled us and out-batted us and that’s why they deserved to win. Credit to Jadeja who was very brave. His innings was a turning point. There is an issue with confidence and getting over the finishing line. There are players in the dressing room who are desperate to win for England. We haven’t won for a long time and the longer that builds up it’s going to take a serious performance to drag us over the line. The lads are hurting. We’ve got a few days off and then we’ll come back at the Rose Bowl."
    7/21/2014 2:11:10 PM
"It gets harder and harder the more we don’t win. Until that bloke taps me on the shoulder saying ‘we don’t want you to captain’ I’m desperate to turn this around for England. If I’m not good enough by the end of the summer then so be it. I’m trying my heart out, I need to score runs and we need to start winning but I’m here as long as they want me."
    7/21/2014 2:11:35 PM
"It’s all up to Matt. He’s been a fantastic player for England and if he is desperate to carry on and help turn this around then he’s got a place because I think he’s the best wicket-keeper batsmen in the country. He’s a fighter."
    7/21/2014 2:11:56 PM
  • And here is your @InvestecCricket man of the match. No surprises, it's Ishant Sharma: #EngvInd

  • YOUR TWEETS - on Cook and England's selection

    7/21/2014 2:15:27 PM
  • Question to all my England followers. What would your test team be for Southampton ?Congrats to India, who were the better team over 5 days
  • DHONI…
"It is a very memorable Test match for all of us. I feel the approach was fantastic – it wasn’t like all of us got runs, but what was important was that individuals rose to the occasion. It was a very crucial toss, there was a bit of moisture in the wicket. Looking at the whole batting department they did very well, and the tail is contributing."
    7/21/2014 2:17:19 PM
"He has to play that way. The more Test cricket he plays the more runs he gets and the more confidence he will get. He’s someone who doubts himself more than anyone else. What we have seen is that once he gets a bit aggressive, he starts playing his shots much better. We all know when it comes to a talent aspect that he can play a major role. I feel he’s definitely someone who can contribute."
    7/21/2014 2:18:17 PM
"What cricket has shown is it is a great leveller. You have to constantly put pressure on the opposition, that’s what the first session showed us. We had to be at our best because there was a big partnership. You start to doubt yourself, but you have to keep going, keep pushing yourself. Ishant didn’t really want to bowl short (in the over before lunch). It got us the wicket and gave him the confidence to keep attacking the batsman. It was a fantastic bowling effort. He is our strike bowler."
    7/21/2014 2:18:59 PM
  • [nasserhussain] What would we miss if Alastair Cook was not captain of England at the Ageas Bowl? A lot of stuff has been written and said this week about ‘he just needs a score’ but that will not change all of England’s woes. Someone needs to stand up and change things otherwise this poor run will continue. I’ve one question for Alastair Cook. ‘Are you making a difference as England captain?’ If you are not, then give it to someone else.”

  • The final rites - Ravindra Jadeja sets off in celebration after running out James Anderson

    7/21/2014 2:33:58 PM
England's selectors will meet on Tuesday to pick their team for the third Test - and the form and fitness of the senior players will be very much on the agenda. Beefy has already made it clear that he'd have no problem if Jos Buttler came into the side for Matt Prior; as he puts it, Buttler's batting is good enough and his 'keeping isn't going to get any better out of the side. Here's what Straussy reckons...
    7/21/2014 2:38:09 PM
  • [andrewstrauss] Matt Prior looks weighed down by plenty of things – his injury, his form with the bat, his keeping. Maybe there is still a hangover from what happened in Australia. He’s a good example of where the senior players are mentally at the moment. If he’s struggling with those injuries, it is going to be a struggle for England to pick him for the next Test.

  • Since beating Australia in the fourth test last summer, this is England's test record: D,L,L,L,L,L,D,L,D,L. #EngvInd
  • ISHANT SHARMA knocked the stuffing out of England with career-best figures of 7-74. Here's what he had to say after being named Man of the Match...

    7/21/2014 2:46:26 PM
  • Dhoni: "Ishant didn’t really want to bowl short. It got us the wicket and gave him the confidence to keep attacking the batsman." #EngvInd
[ianbotham] I’ll throw a name into the ring – Eoin Morgan. If Cook wants to stay in the side that’s fine – it didn’t do me any harm when I resigned. It might free him up. You can’t get 25 hundreds and suddenly it’s all gone. Matt Prior is not the Matt Prior I know so I would consider Jos Buttler there and then you’ve got to think about Stokes and Jordan too. The other one you’ve got to consider is Stuart Broad. I don’t want to see him play on and play on with an injury that can be cured in a month and then suddenly it becomes a three or four month job because he’s playing injured.

    7/21/2014 2:53:31 PM
  • Here is what's coming your way tonight. The third test starts Sunday at 10am, on Sky Sports 2: #EngvInd

  • Back on rattler ... Allotments are busy !!!
Thanks for that Bumble - happy travels. Here's Nasser's view on India...

[nasserhussain] Now India are 1-0 up they could go back to ‘plan A’, which was play Rohit Sharma at six, Dhoni at seven, Jadeja at eight and Kumar at nine. That’s the only decision they’ve got to make. England have got loads.

    7/21/2014 4:01:51 PM

[mikeatherton] India shouldn’t try to sit on a 1-0 lead because England are in a hole. India should pick a side to try and win matches. Of all the recent defeats we’ve seen, this was the worst.
