England v India, Second Test

Live from Lord's

  • Over 59 - England 142-4 (Ballance 65, Moeen 10)
Another flashy cut shot from Ballance but Dhoni has deployed a sweeper on the point boundary and the left-hander is limited to a single, the only run off Ishant's latest over

  • 7/18/2014 3:25:57 PM
  • Over 60 - England 144-4 (Ballance 66, Moeen 10)
Jadeja continues to spear the ball in outside the left-handers' off stump at around 57/58mph. Ballance nudges a single to keep the scoreboard crawling over
    7/18/2014 3:28:50 PM
  • Over 61 - England 150-4 (Ballance 71, Moeen 11)
Dhoni brings back his most effective bowler, Kumar, in an attempt to break this partnership before the arrival of the second new ball. The pitch has flattened out since his opening spell, though, and Ballance sits back and punches him back through mid-on for another delightful boundary. Six runs off Kumar's comeback over and England are moving along nicely in the London sunshine
    7/18/2014 3:32:47 PM
  • Empties.

    7/18/2014 3:34:28 PM
  • Jadeja is "in the groove" according to @ShaneWarne . Are India about to strike? England 154-4.

  • Over 62 - England 154-4 (Ballance 72, Moeen 14)
India have left extra cover open to Ali, attempting to lure him into an expansive drive out of the rough to Jadeja. The ball isn't spinning back into him, yet, though and he is able to collect two on the off-side before exchanging singles with Ballance. The partnership is 41, the deficit 141
    7/18/2014 3:36:52 PM
  • Over 63 - England 156-4 (Ballance 74, Moeen 14)
Ballance eases Kumar out to the cover sweeper for a couple and I was just typing how composed he was looking before a loose waft outside off stump almost results in his demise. Perhaps too comfortable... Head back on Gary, still work to do
    7/18/2014 3:41:01 PM
  • Over 64 - England 161-4 (Ballance 77, Moeen 16)
A productive over for England against Jadeja as Ballance glances the ball fine off his pads for three and Ali adds singles either side of that deft stroke
    7/18/2014 3:43:00 PM
  • Over 65 - England 163-4 (Ballance 78, Moeen 17)
Singles for both batsmen off Kumar brings up the 50 partnership from 111 balls
    7/18/2014 3:46:13 PM
  • Ballance & Ali fending off India. They've reached their 50 partnership. Few scares along the way, mind!

  • Over 66 - England 165-4 (Ballance 79, Moeen 18)
India, rather like England did last evening, are going through the motions with the second new ball creeping closer. It's a dangerous ploy in what looks like being a low-scoring affair. Ballance and Ali nudge singles to reduce the deficit to 130. The new ball is due in 14 overs' time
    7/18/2014 3:49:40 PM
  • Over 67 - England 165-4 (Ballance 79, Moeen 18)
Shami (0-25) returns to the attack and returns with a rather harmless maiden to Ali. Very little lateral movement for the seamers now and the pitch looks to have flattened out
    7/18/2014 3:52:56 PM
  • Over 68 - England 169-4 (Ballance 80, Moeen 21)
A bit of bounce in this over for Jadeja but Ali plays forward with soft hands and a defensive shot yields three runs down to third man. Ballance had earlier moved to 80 with a single and, whisper it quietly, is nearing back-to-back Lord's centuries...
    7/18/2014 3:56:29 PM
  • Ballance continues to accumulate steadily...

    7/18/2014 3:57:45 PM
  • Over 69 - England 170-4 (Ballance 80, Moeen 21)
Shami is bending his back and only a wide, the first of the match, blots a testing over at Ali. Time for drinks
    7/18/2014 4:01:29 PM
  • Over 70 - England 173-4 (Ballance 82, Moeen 22)
Three singles from Jadeja's over. Minor collision between Moeen and Jadeja at the non-striker's end, causing much hilarity and whimsy.
    7/18/2014 4:08:28 PM
  • Over 71 - England 177-4 (Ballance 84, Moeen 23)
India made 52-0 in the 10 overs before the second new ball yesterday. England off to a decent start here thanks to three singles and a Shami no ball.
    7/18/2014 4:12:59 PM
  • Over 72 - England 178-4 (Ballance 85, Moeen 23)
Slight mix-up sees Ballance and Moeen end up turning down the longest single of the day, but better that than the alternative. Just a single from Jadeja's over. Been a real grind of a day.
    7/18/2014 4:16:53 PM
  • Over 73 - England 186-4 (Ballance 93, Moeen 23)
Binny back into the attack with the old ball. Not much fun for him, but still not really an excuse for the half-volleys he serves up for Ballance to crack through first extra-cover and then point for a pair of boundaries that take him into the 90s.
    7/18/2014 4:21:48 PM
  • Crowd basking in the sun as Ballance continues to fly the flag and moves into the 90s.

    7/18/2014 4:22:48 PM
  • Over 74 - England 190-4 (Ballance 93, Moeen 27)
Moeen in on the act now, skipping down the track and bopping Jadeja back down the ground for a one-bounce four.
    7/18/2014 4:23:44 PM
  • Over 75 - England 191-4 (Ballance 94, Moeen 27)
Just a single for Ballance from Binny's over. Moeen winds up for a couple of big drives but bails out on both occasions and contents himself with steering the ball to fielders.
    7/18/2014 4:28:08 PM
  • Over 76 - England 192-4 (Ballance 95, Moeen 27)
Cracking partnership, this. Ballance the main man, but between them these two relative newcomers have steered England out of some choppy waters. Story of the summer really, especially with the bat. The newbies have all done their bit; it's the senior players struggling.
    7/18/2014 4:31:17 PM
  • Gary Ballance moves onto 99! Tune into SS2 to see whether he can get over the line!
  • Over 77 - England 204-4 (Ballance 107, Moeen 27)
[100]Ballance powers through to a superb century with a pair of boundaries whipped through midwicket. Really has been a superb innings - every bit as good as Rahane's effort yesterday. Key to both innings the pacing, with acceleration against weary bowlers late on a hot day. Ballance still refusing to take even his jumper off despite the heat, instead deciding to celebrate his hundred by punching a fantastic drive straight back past the bowler.
    7/18/2014 4:35:16 PM
  • David and Shane hail Ballance's hundred

    7/18/2014 4:35:53 PM
  • 100! Ballance celebrates his fantastic century in the sunshine at Lord’s (but the shirt stays on).

  • Ballance has joined an exclusive club by scoring a 100 in his first two Lord's Test matches.

  • Over 78 - England 206-4 (Ballance 108, Moeen 28)
Ballance joins Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott on a short list of players to make centuries in their first two Lord's Test matches. India's Dilip Vengsarkar scored tons in his first three trips to HQ.
    7/18/2014 4:38:35 PM
  • Moeen lbw b Vijay 32

[wicket]Frustrating dismissal for Moeen, falling just before the second new ball to the part-time spin of Vijay. Trying to work the ball to leg, he ends up just missing a straight one.
    7/18/2014 4:42:19 PM
  • WICKET! Ali is trapped LBW by Vijay for 32. End of an important partnership for England.

  • Ballance's wagonwheel as seen on the iPad app.

    7/18/2014 4:43:54 PM
  • Over 79 - England 211-5 (Ballance 109, Plunkett 0)
Plunkett in as nightwatchman. Seven overs to go tonight. New ball round the corner. Not sure about that.
    7/18/2014 4:45:25 PM
  • Over 80 - England 212-5 (Ballance 110, Plunkett 0)
New ball is due as Ballance and Plunkett negotiate Vijay's over.
    7/18/2014 4:47:29 PM
  • Over 81 - England 212-5 (Ballance 110, Plunkett 0)
Not a great first over with the new ball from Kumar. Not making Ballance play.
    7/18/2014 4:52:06 PM
  • @Nothingtoseeher : @BumbleCricket How much of Bob's Verdict grump is an act? Did he ever laugh?” FABULOUS bloke ....and company
  • Over 82 - England 214-5 (Ballance 110, Plunkett 2)
Plunkett clips Ishant away through midwicket for two to get off the mark.
    7/18/2014 4:56:13 PM
  • Ballance c Dhoni b Kumar 110

[wicket]Big wicket for India before stumps as Ballance flicks one down the legside and Dhoni tumbles to his right to take the catch.
    7/18/2014 4:57:34 PM
  • WICKET! Look closely & you'll see the slight tickle on Ballance's bat. He goes for a wonderful 110.

  • [shanewarne] England have got to get through these final few overs. India will desperately want one more wicket tonight. It’s a good game, this.

    7/18/2014 4:59:59 PM
  • Over 83 - England 214-6 (Plunkett 2, Prior 0)
Prior, belatedly, is forced to come out and bat. Negotiates the rest of Kumar's over.
    7/18/2014 5:01:41 PM
  • Over 84 - England 214-6 (Plunkett 2, Prior 0)
Good short ball from Ishant, but equally well handled by Plunkett who users all his height to get his hands above the ball and keep it down. Just two overs left tonight now. Fascinating stuff; so far this has been a series between two sides utterly incapable of seizing the advantage whenever the chance has presented itself.
    7/18/2014 5:07:27 PM
  • Over 85 - England 216-6 (Plunkett 2, Prior 2)
Prior off the mark with a clip off his pads for two. Edges the last ball of the over, but it's short of slip and evades first slip. They could take a single, but Plunkett at the non-striker's end says no. Quite right; if you're going to have a nightwatchman, he has to do the job and take that final over.
    7/18/2014 5:11:55 PM
  • Over 86 - England 219-6 (Plunkett 4, Prior 2)
Late fun as Shami Finns the stumps at the non-striker's end for a no-ball and then Plunkett flicks the ball to leg gully who tries to affect what would've been a stupendously sharp run out but instead sends his throw away towards the boundary to allow Plunkett a couple of runs. Sharp bouncer to finish the day's play.
