England v India, Second Test

Live from Lord's

  • Close - England 219-6, trail by 76 runs
[close]Fascinating day's play once again. Both sides have had chances to grab this game by the scruff of the neck. Neither has managed to do so, and the upshot is that it's just about honours even. England still trail by 76 with only four wickets in hand, but the three men to bat include two Test centurions and a chap who made 81 in his last innings. England still have the potential to get a significant lead here. That's perhaps not true for India, barring something sensational in the first hour of tomorrow's play.

  • DAY THREE - ENGLAND TO RESUME ON 219-6, 76 behind

Aside from the inevitable fact that it will rain at some point today – for how long and when seems to be anyone’s guess – the one thing everyone is agreed on is that this morning session is of the utmost importance. We’ve all heard that before, of course, but there’s no doubting that England – after winning the toss on a very green wicket - will be behind the eight-ball if they can’t achieve first-innings parity. As Shane would say, ‘game on’.
    7/19/2014 7:16:34 AM
  • Matt Prior, who will resume on 2no alongside nightwatchman Liam Plunkett (4no) will be under particular scrutiny after a lean run with the bat and a scruffy display with the gloves in India’s first innings. The analytical microscope is trained more closely, though, on Alastair Cook after the skipper was again dismissed cheaply yesterday. Is Cook better off without the captaincy for the rest of the series? That has certainly got you and our pundits talking…

[mikeatherton] Something will have to give soon – a combination of poor results and poor form is not one a captain can survive for long. We’re not at crisis point yet, but we’re heading towards it if nothing changes.

It's looking good, I have to say - the covers are off (but nearby) and the stumps are in. India are in a huddle on the outfield and judging by the two goals that have been set off, are picking their teams for their favoured football warm-up match.

  • The calm before the 2002 storm...

    7/19/2014 9:19:03 AM
[nasserhussain] We had them 140-5 – we’d got four reasonable players out in Sehwag, Ganguly, Tendulkar and Dravid. Mohammad Kaif came out and as he walked past me I said ‘come on guys, they’ve sent the bus driver in – we’ve got a chance here’. As he smashed the last ball for four he walked past me saying ‘not bad for a bus driver’! It was a pretty good comeback. He and Yuvraj Singh played brilliantly. Sourav hardly gets a mention apart from the shirt waving but he smashed 60 off about 40 deliveries, which set them up perfectly.

Inevitably, the discussion has turned to the topic of Cook's future. Beefy says maybe it's time to rest the skipper. What do you think? Have your say in our poll...

  • Coming up on SS2... we look ahead to a big day for Matt Prior, with Nasser & Andrew. #EngvInd

  • "Prior must come out and play positively this morning," says Strauss. "It's a big day for the lad," agrees Hussain.

  • [andrewstrauss] At the moment it’s the double whammy for Prior. His form is poor with the bat and the keeping is going at the same time. When he’s had poor form in the past one of the two disciplines has been ok; this is the first time that he’s struggled with both.

    7/19/2014 9:55:54 AM
  • HERE WE GO...
So, a lot of pressure on Prior - the umpires are on their way and we're minutes away from the start of what could be a defining session in this Test.

  • Over 87 - England 220-6 (Prior 3, Plunkett 4)
Ishant kicks off day three to Prior, who watchfully defends the first four deliveries before pushing the fifth to cover for a single. Nightwatchman Plunkett is his partner and he sees out the final ball. Very little swing or seam from the opening over
    7/19/2014 10:05:25 AM
  • Over 88 - England 222-6 (Prior 5, Plunkett 4)
This is a big innings for Prior, not just in terms of the game situation, but also bearing in mind his indifferent display behind the stumps during India's innings. He works Kumar off his pads for two through midwicket to reduce the deficit to 73
    7/19/2014 10:09:55 AM
  • Over 89 - England 225-6 (Prior 5, Plunkett 7)
Plunkett, no mug with the bat by any means, stands tall and punches Ishant through the covers for three to get up and running for the day. Plunkett has two first-class centuries to his name and a Test best of 44 not out against West Indies at Headingley back in 2007

  • Terrific feature on Mikey Holding on the gallops in Newmarket
  • Over 90 - England 231-6 (Prior 10, Plunkett 8)
Plunkett dabs a single and then Prior, after playing and missing at Kumar, clips the India seamer fine to the boundary. There was some double bluff in that play as Dhoni had just dropped a fielder back to the square-leg boundary, but Kumar attacked the stumps and almost rapped the pads. Prior's bat saved the day and gave him four
