  • [wicket] Cook ct Sangakkara bld Kulasekara 11
Cook chases a wide delivery and is comfortably caught behind the wicket. A loose drive from the England captain
    5/22/2014 12:24:53 PM
  • WICKET: Hotspot shows a nick off Cook's outside edge and he goes for 11. England 22-1. #EngvSL
  • [michaelholding] Alastair Cook wasn’t getting the ball away and so he tried something a little bit different. He was looking for the drive and didn’t quite get there. It was a big edge.

    5/22/2014 12:26:30 PM
  • Nick, Beefy and Mikey in full flow.

    5/22/2014 12:27:52 PM
  • Cook caught behind by Sangakkara from the bowling of Kulasekara after a loose drive: #EngvSL
  • Over 6: England 24/1 (Bell 11, Ballance 1)
Yorkshireman Ballance comes to the middle for what is just his seventh ODI appearance. He gets off the mark with an inside edge onto his pad and scampers a single. Good job he hit that, mind you, with the slip cordon ready for a huge appeal! England pegged back by the wicket of Cook. Kulasekara has been bang on the money so far today
    5/22/2014 12:29:41 PM
  • Over 7: England 28/1 (Bell 15, Ballance 1)
With the dots just beginning to stack up, Bell gets a pull shot away and the ball races across the vast square here at the Oval and finds the boundary. Lakmal is not bowling quick enough to trouble Bell with a short length
    5/22/2014 12:32:41 PM
  • Over 8: England 36/1 (Bell 15, Ballance 9)
Two beautiful Ballance boundaries to report in this over. First he clips a leg stump half-volley from Kulasekara through midwicket and then he leans on a full delivery and drives it straight past the bowler. Great start from the young left-hander with the pressure starting to build

    5/22/2014 12:36:45 PM
  • BEEFY WEATHER UPDATE... ...and it is good news. The bad weather that has 'flooded' Southampton will bypass the Oval, he says - which is easy to believe as the sun continues to shine strongly.
    5/22/2014 12:38:15 PM
  • Over 9: England 38/1 (Bell 16, Ballance 10)
Lakmal settles into a probing line and length and restricts Bell and Ballance to just a single apiece. A rather sedate 'powerplay' so far
    5/22/2014 12:40:20 PM
  • [twitter] Over 10: England 39/1 (Bell 16, Ballance 11)
England end the mandatory powerplay with a whimper. Just a Ballance single from Kulasekara's fifth over. A new era but same old tactics it seems, building a platform for a late onslaught. Is that the way to go? Tweet us @skycricket

  • Ian Bell - ticking over at just under a run a ball

    5/22/2014 12:49:46 PM
  • Over 11: England 46/1 (Bell 20, Ballance 14)
Close! Bell would have been walking back to the pavilion but Sangakkara's shy was fractionally off target. Bell nurdled to leg and immediately called two. Sanga had other ideas, setting off from behind the stumps, throwing off his glove and then shying at the stumps. Bell put in the dive but he was still well short. Let off for England. A good over for England that scare aside with seven runs scampered
    5/22/2014 12:50:13 PM
  • [50] Over 12: England 52/1 (Bell 21, Ballance 19)
The England 50 comes up midway through the 12th over when Ballance clips a leg-side delivery from the returning Malinga fine to the boundary. Malinga looks a shadow of the bowling bamboozling England on Tuesday night and Sri Lanka's attack looks rather toothless as a result
    5/22/2014 12:54:55 PM
  • [six] Over 13: England 61/1 (Bell 30, Ballance 19)
A change of bowling from SL as Perera, the slayer of England's bowlers the other night, comes on. He beats Bell's outside edge with a peach but the Warwickshire man responds with a cut for two and then a towering six back down the ground. Glorious shot after the bowler had over-pitched. Nine off Perera's opening over
    5/22/2014 12:59:18 PM
  • Over 14: England 64/1 (Bell 32, Ballance 20)
A promising partnership is developing here between Bell and Ballance. The left/right-hand combination is unsettling Sri Lanka. Both batsmen exchange singles before a fabulous one-handed diving stop from Dilshan at point denies Ballance a boundary last ball
    5/22/2014 1:03:29 PM
  • WASP predicted 275 would be par for England - at 64-1 off 14, it was up to 285.

    5/22/2014 1:03:44 PM
  • Over 15: England 70/1 (Bell 36, Ballance 22)
Bell drives elegantly on the up through wide mid-off and Lakmal gives chase before hauling in just before the boundary. His efforts saved just one run. Perera comes back well and once again beats Bell, who was looking to open the face of the bat and steer the ball to third man. That shot is his strength, but also his weakness
    5/22/2014 1:07:46 PM
  • BEEFY WEATHER UPDATE... things have taken a turn for the worse, with lightning and rain expected around 4pm, he now reckons. Mid-phone interview he's indicated that he's just spotted lightning on the horizon - so batten down the hatches.
    5/22/2014 1:11:01 PM
  • Plenty of phone interviews - and weather updates - for Beefy to get through today.

    5/22/2014 1:11:30 PM
  • Over 16: England 81/1 (Bell 38, Ballance 29)
England's most productive over of the innings, here. 11 off it and just one boundary - Ballance steering a short, wide delivery from Mathews over the head of Jayawardene at slip. Risky, but effective. The partnership has also passed 50. England going well here
    5/22/2014 1:12:28 PM
  • Over 17: England 90/1 (Bell 46, Ballance 30)
Bell refuses to let the next over drift and wallops a full delivery from Perera back past mid off and fizzing into the fence. Fantastic strike and a signal of England's intent to kick on. Nine off the over in total and now we'll have drinks

    5/22/2014 1:16:24 PM
  • Over 18: England 94/1 (Bell 48, Ballance 32)
Sri Lanka react to the England charge with the introduction of spin. Senanayke restricts England to four runs here, two singles apiece. Dark clouds looming over the Oval...
    5/22/2014 1:21:03 PM
  • England going well but rain forecast in 8minutes.... Hmmm
  • Over 19: England 97/1 (Bell 49, Ballance 34)
England really don't want to lose a wicket here with rain seemingly on its way. Duckworth-Lewis would then do them no favours whatsoever. Just three singles taken off Mathews. Sri Lanka have regrouped well after that drinks break. Bell closing on 50
    5/22/2014 1:25:18 PM
  • Russel isn't far off. The lights are on and the first spits of rain are here...

    5/22/2014 1:25:24 PM
  • Fifty for Bell off 52 balls with four fours and one six. Eng 101-1 off 20 overs. #engvsl
  • [50] Over 20: England 101/1 (Bell 50, Ballance 37)
Bell brings up his 31st half-century in ODIs and second against Sri Lanka with a single down the ground off the last ball. He's got there off just 52 balls too and is revelling in his role back at the top of the order. England also creep into three figures
    5/22/2014 1:28:16 PM
  • Ian Bell brings up his 50 from 52 balls. England are 101-1 off 20 overs: #EngvSL

  • [wicket] Bell ct Malinga bld Mathews 50
50 and out! Bell sweeps a slower ball from Mathews round the corner to Malinga on the 45 and, despite losing his hat to the wind, Malinga holds on comfortably. Bell can't believe it!
    5/22/2014 1:30:44 PM
  • [rain] RAIN STOPS PLAY!
And with that the players leave the field as the heavens open. What a horrible time for Bell to get out!
    5/22/2014 1:31:24 PM
  • WICKET: Bell is caught by Malinga before the heavens open at the Oval. Play suspended: #EngvSL

  • Wow.... Forecast was spot on... But what a vital wicket for SL of Bell just before rains.
  • Heavy rain here at the Oval...Does not look good ATM

  • The word is that this will last until 3.20pm, but there's plenty more coming in behind...
    5/22/2014 1:45:35 PM
  • Swathes of rain on Beefy's iPad weather app...

    5/22/2014 1:47:11 PM
  • Here's Sri Lanka's seamers bowling to Bell in this innings: #EngvSL

  • Ian Bell's ODI stats after he swept a slower ball to Malinga on 50. Live on SS2 now: #EngvSL

  • The wind played havoc with the covers as the storm blew in...

    5/22/2014 1:55:01 PM
The worst of the rain is now past, but it is still coming down and the whole of the square is covered, with puddles formed where the run-off pipes languish on the outfield. This will take quite some mopping up...
    5/22/2014 1:56:11 PM
  • Puddles... But also patches of blue sky in the distance

    5/22/2014 2:03:24 PM
  • The moment everyone fled...
