Live from the Kia Oval

While the super soppers do their work, check out our interview with Alastair Cook - in which he talks about the summer ahead, competition for places, his form - and the Ashes, plus plenty more...
    5/22/2014 2:11:47 PM
  • The umpires will carry out an inspection at 4pm. #EngvSL Much brighter now and mopping up underway.
  • Inspection at 4pm .. That's in another 45mins
  • Conditions are also improving at Wentworth, where storms interrupted the BMW PGA Championship... part of Sky Sports' Ultimate Weekend.
    5/22/2014 2:23:40 PM
  • While we wait for the outfield to dry, thoughts are naturally turning to yesterday's Pro-Am at Wentworth where Beefy teamed up with Brian Lara, Allan Lamb and Chris Wood in what you can only call a colourful grouping...
    5/22/2014 2:25:54 PM
  • First prize for fashion - Botham, Lara, Lamb.

    5/22/2014 2:26:45 PM
  • [ianbotham] It was a great day even though we left a lot of birdies out there. Wentworth was in excellent condition.

    5/22/2014 2:28:30 PM
  • Beefy’s group finished on 11-under for the round, just ahead of the four-ball featuring Andrew Strauss, Darren Gough, Mark Nicholas – and pro Brett Rumford. Sadly, Straussy lost his swing on the day and didn’t quite get going…
    5/22/2014 2:36:55 PM
  • 5/22/2014 2:37:27 PM
  • Stand by for an Ultimate Weekend on Sky Sports. Here are all the details...
    5/22/2014 2:47:25 PM
  • Positively sweltering!

    5/22/2014 2:55:29 PM
  • Umpires will inspect again at 4.30pm as worried about areas of the outfield. #EngvSL
  • Another inspection in 20mins... Few dodgy areas ...
  • Coming up on SS2 – Atherton & Hussain react to news that the ECB has charged Lou Vincent & Naveed Arif under Anti-Corruption Code.
  • Here is the latest scene from the Oval. Inspection due at 4,30pm. Definitely a lot brighter now!
Vincent is charged with a total of 14 offences in relation to two county matches played under the ECB’s jurisdiction in August 2011 - a Twenty20 match between Sussex and Lancashire and a 40 over game between Sussex and Kent. Naveed Arif is charged with six offences in relation to the 40 over game between Sussex and Kent in August 2011."

    5/22/2014 3:33:33 PM
  • [nasserhussain] The ICC ACSU unit looked into this particular game, which they cleared, so this doesn’t reflect particularly well on them. The ECB have done their own investigations and have charged these two on the back of Lou Vincent coming out and telling people exactly what he’s been up to over the years.

    5/22/2014 3:33:56 PM
  • [mikeatherton] We’ve had lots of incidents in the last few years where players have reported approaches. Reported approaches will not always be made public. Players are much more educated now and much more willing to report approaches. This refers to a game three years ago; obviously there was stuff before that.

    5/22/2014 3:34:17 PM
  • Play will restart at 5pm. Joins Messrs Gower, Hussain and Atherton until then: #EngvSL
  • Some good news - play will restart at 5pm. 39 overs a side with a 20 minute interval... #EngvSL Eng 101-2 have 19 overs left.
  • Revised playing conditions

    5/22/2014 3:36:57 PM
  • Play in 25 min and it's a 39 over game.
  • Sri Lanka fans back in good voice with re-start imminent... but a few flag issues to resolve

    5/22/2014 3:46:26 PM
While Sri Lanka go through some light fielding drills, here's Athers and Strauss discussing England's spin options - or lack of them - following Graeme Swann's retirement...

    5/22/2014 3:54:30 PM
  • Ballance is walking out with... Morgan. So Root, who was heading out to bat when the rain arrived, drops down. #engvsl
  • Over 21: England 102/2 (Ballance 37, Morgan 1)
After a two-and-a-half hour delay, the 21st over is finally completed with new man Morgan up and running with a single
    5/22/2014 4:02:17 PM
  • [wicket] Morgan bld Senanayake 3
The decision to promote Morgan proves futile as the left-hander chops spinner Senanayake back on to his stumps looking to cut
    5/22/2014 4:04:07 PM
  • Over 22: England 106/3 (Ballance 38, Root 1)
Root joins Yorkshire team-mate Ballance in the middle and gets off the mark with a single off Senanayake. Brilliant over from the Sri Lanka spinner
    5/22/2014 4:07:35 PM
  • Over 23: England 109/3 (Ballance 40, Root 2)
That lengthy rain delay has really stalled England, who were motoring before Bell's wicket on the stroke of it. Sri Lanka, the world champions of the shortest format, are my strong favourites now as England struggle to get going again
    5/22/2014 4:11:05 PM
  • WASP has re-calibrated after the rain with 223 now par.

    5/22/2014 4:13:15 PM
  • Over 24: England 112/3 (Ballance 42, Root 3)
Just three more singles added for England. That's just 11 runs added in 20 balls since the restart and England are running out of overs
    5/22/2014 4:14:12 PM
  • Over 25: England 117/3 (Ballance 47, Root 3)
Five off this over...Don't get too excited! Ballance is nearing a second ODI half-century after punching Mathews for two twos off the back foot and pinching strike with a single final ball
    5/22/2014 4:16:42 PM
  • Jeez... Gary Ballance does look good... Well constructed 50.. Well played!!!
  • [50] Over 26: England 122/3 (Ballance 50, Root 5)
50 for Ballance! He eases to his milestone off 62 balls during an over that costs five more. He needs to kick on now with 13 overs remaining
    5/22/2014 4:19:37 PM
[betting] Fancy a bet on England's first ODI against Sri Lanka? Bet in-play on the latest action from The Oval.
    5/22/2014 4:20:10 PM
  • [6]Over 27: England 134/3 (Ballance 61, Root 6)
That's more like it! Ballance makes his move after passing 50. He greets Lakmal back into the attack by pulling him hard over square-leg for six and then ends the over by guiding a full ball to the third man fence. 12 off the over. Better, impressive, too...
    5/22/2014 4:22:29 PM
  • Over 28: England 139/3 (Ballance 63, Root 9)
The two Yorkies running well between the wickets. Five singles added off Senanayake
    5/22/2014 4:26:31 PM
  • Over 29: England 144/3 (Ballance 64, Root 13)
Malinga is back and is able to bowl five of these final 11 overs. His variations will come in very handy here with England looking to attack. An over of slower balls costs just five more to the total. 10 overs left - i'd say England need at least 230 against this star-studded SL line-up
    5/22/2014 4:29:29 PM
  • [wicket] Ballance ct Chandimal bld Senanayake 64
A fine innings from Ballance comes to an end when he picks out Chandimal on the midwicket boundary
    5/22/2014 4:30:52 PM
  • [nasserhussain] It’s not the biggest of boundaries but Ballance got it nowhere near the middle of the bat.”

    5/22/2014 4:33:13 PM
  • Over 30: England 147/4 (Root 15, Bopara 1)
Bopara, despite dislocating his finger in the warm-up, is the new batsman. He is beaten all ends up by Senanayake but gets off the mark with a single. England still have a two-over powerplay at their disposal. Fireworks required from someone...
    5/22/2014 4:33:18 PM
  • [wicket] Bopara lbw Senanayake 3
Bopara is adjudged lbw sweeping Senanayake. Replays show that the impact was outside off stump but Bopara was in such a rush to get off the field he didn't use a review!
