England v Sri Lanka - 1st ODI

Live from the Kia Oval

  • Over 11: Sri Lanka 50/2 (Dilshan 27, Jayawardene 12)
We don't like the sound of that Beefy! A rather defensive move from Cook, who looks to slip a few overs in from Root. Jayawardene is having none of it, though, and sweeps hard through backward square-leg for a boundary. Seven off Root's opener
    5/22/2014 6:27:11 PM
  • Over 12: Sri Lanka 57/2 (Dilshan 31, Jayawardene 15)
Fabulous batting once again from Dilshan, who seizes on a little bit of width from Jordan to crash his final delivery through backward point for a boundary. Seven off the over and Sri Lanka regrouping nicely through this dangerous duo
    5/22/2014 6:30:30 PM
  • Over 13: Sri Lanka 60/2 (Dilshan 32, Jayawardene 16)
There is rain in the air and England are rushing to get through their overs. Bopara is the new bowler, coming off his long run, and starts well by conceding just three, including a wide. England must get through 20 overs before Duckworth-Lewis can get to work. SL need to be 116-2 at that stage
    5/22/2014 6:34:58 PM
  • [rain] RAIN STOPS PLAY
It's got heavier and the umpires have no choice but to take the players off the field with Sri Lanka 60-2 after 13.3 overs
    5/22/2014 6:35:34 PM
  • The covers are back on at the Oval. We'll keep you posted with developments: #EngvSL

  • Boos initially from some fans, who then scarper for cover...

    5/22/2014 6:40:10 PM
  • In the meantime check out this taster for our upcoming Ricky Ponting masterclass:…
  • Covers coming off... IF we lose 5 overs revised target would be 236 off 34 overs ... But we still don't know how many we would lose
  • [andrewstrauss] I thought Anderson and Gurney were excellent with the new ball – they put Sri Lanka under pressure with a couple of early wickets and Chris Jordan has made life difficult for Sri Lanka as well. They are a long way away from where they want to be but maybe this rain break will help Sri Lanka because it will shorten the chase, they’ve got eight wickets in hand and some explosive cricketers still to come in.

    5/22/2014 6:47:05 PM
  • Conditions fine now for fans to test their arm at the ECB Cricket Factory's throwing challenge. Top speed recorded so far is 75mph. The covers are coming off...

    5/22/2014 6:51:44 PM
  • Play will resume at 8.05pm - updated target to follow... #EngvSL
  • Start in 10mins....226 in 32 overs
  • We have a T20 target with ODI field restrictions..... A good target I would think.
  • Russel's firmly of the view the rain break has improved Sri Lanka's chances of winning this game. It will still be a tough ask - but it's very much game on. We're back underway...
    5/22/2014 7:03:26 PM
  • We're back on SS1, a large crowd are still at the Oval. Follow the action here: #EngvSL

  • Over 14: Sri Lanka 63/2 (Dilshan 33, Jayawardene 18)
Tredwell finishes what he started before the rain break, conceding three singles from the final three deliveries of his opening over
    5/22/2014 7:06:48 PM
  • [wicket] Dilshan ct Ballance bld Jordan 33
Big wicket for England as Dilshan charges Jordan but can only slice high to third man, where Ballance takes the catch! Huge cheers
    5/22/2014 7:07:30 PM
  • [mikeatherton] Ballance took a good catch there – he just had to settle himself on the boundary edge. Dilshan was trying to hit it down the ground and he could only top-edge it down to third man, where the boundary is a bit longer.

    5/22/2014 7:09:32 PM
  • Over 15: Sri Lanka 65/3 (Jayawardene 18, Mathews 1)
A mighty fine over from Jordan. Just two singles conceded to go with the wicket of Dilshan. Captain Mathews is the new batsman, alongside Jayawardene, and gets off the mark with a single after a leg-side wide
    5/22/2014 7:13:32 PM
  • Over 16: Sri Lanka 77/3 (Jayawardene 29, Mathews 2)
And so the Mahela masterclass begins... Quite brilliant batting from the Sri Lankan maestro here, reverse paddle-sweeping Tredwell for four and then driving over extra cover for the same result in an over which costs 12. Pressure now firmly on Tredwell...
    5/22/2014 7:17:17 PM
  • Over 17: Sri Lanka 86/3 (Jayawardene 34, Mathews 2)
Ravi returns but so too do the boundaries. A loopy full-toss deceives both Mahela and Buttler and the ball misses everyone and trickles for four byes. Jayawardene then shuffles across his stumps and flicks four behind square on the leg-side before adding a single. 140 required from 15 overs. Still a big ask...
    5/22/2014 7:22:00 PM
  • [wicket] Jayawardene ct Morgan bld Tredwell 35
Tredders gets his man! Coming back over the wicket, he lures Mahela into a loose flick, which goes straight to Morgan at short midwicket
    5/22/2014 7:22:54 PM
  • Another wicket for England. Jayawardene chips the ball to Morgan at midwicket off Tredwell! #EngvSL

  • Over 18: Sri Lanka 90/4 (Mathews 3, Chandimal 1)
Fair play to Tredwell there, the pressure was growing on the Man of Kent but he picked up the big fish to put England firmly in charge. Chandimal joins Mathews in the middle with Sri Lanka requiring something special
    5/22/2014 7:26:18 PM
  • Nick kicks back with a coffee having earlier pointed out the merits of Tredwell bowling over the wicket. Beefy and Athers pay credit where it is due (a touch begrudgingly!)

    5/22/2014 7:26:30 PM
  • Over 19: Sri Lanka 99/4 (Mathews 5, Chandimal 7)
A required run-rate of nine-an-over is nothing nowadays and with big-hitter Perera still to come Sri Lanka are not out of this yet. Chandimal slogs Bopara through midwicket for four in an over costing nine. 127 required from 78 balls
    5/22/2014 7:30:21 PM
  • Over 20: Sri Lanka 107/4 (Mathews 12, Chandimal 8)
The boundaries and singles continue to flow to keep this contest interesting. Mathews cracks a reverse sweep to the boundary after Tredwell had offered up a full toss to bring up the SL 100. Gripping the ball looks tricky with the outfield still very wet. 119 required from 72
    5/22/2014 7:34:13 PM
  • [wicket] Chandimal ct Buttler bld Jordan 8
Chandimal looks to send the ball towards Vauxhall tube station but can only get a faint edge through to Buttler. SL five down
    5/22/2014 7:35:27 PM
  • [wicket] Kulasekara ct Buttler 0
The decision to elevate Kulasekara above Perera doesn't pay off as he can only top-edge a Jordan short ball straight up and Buttler walks forward to claim a simple catch
    5/22/2014 7:38:20 PM
  • [davidgower] This is not a great shot – Kulasekara tried to hoick it away, the ball goes straight up in the air and Buttler takes a simple catch. He was late on the shot and got underneath it. Credit again to Jordan, hwo has used the short ball well."

    5/22/2014 7:40:10 PM
  • Over 21: Sri Lanka 108/6 (Mathews 13, Perera 0)
One run conceded and two wickets taken, Jordan has put England on the brink of victory here. He used the short ball very well in that over and surely Mathews and Perera are Sri Lanka's last hopes of pulling off victory
    5/22/2014 7:41:18 PM
  • Jordan - is in pole position for Man of the Match after improving his figures to 3-18

    5/22/2014 7:42:21 PM
  • [wicket] Mathews ct Cook bld Tredwell 18
Cook takes a stunner to remove opposite number Mathews! After reverse-sweeping Tredwell for four earlier in the over, he tried to repeat the dose but got under it too much and Cook ran back and held superbly over his shoulder. Game over?
    5/22/2014 7:42:52 PM
  • [michaelholding] Sri Lanka are falling apart at the seams now – it was always going to be a difficult chase. This was a good catch by Cook who judged it well. It’s never easy taking those ones that come over your shoulder.

    5/22/2014 7:43:39 PM
  • England are in a great position, with Sri Lanka 115-7 and needing 226 to win. Matthews the last wicket to fall:

  • Over 22: Sri Lanka 114/7 (Perera 1, Senanayake 0)
Tredwell now has 2-32 from his five overs and England are three wickets away from opening up a 1-0 lead in this five-match series. Senanayake is the new batsman...
    5/22/2014 7:45:42 PM
  • Over 23: Sri Lanka 117/7 (Perera 2, Senanayake 2)
Drop! Jordan continues to use the short ball really well and, after hitting Perera, he nearly dismisses him next ball. Another top-edge sailed down to third man and Gurney made great ground to get there but just couldn't hold on low to the ground. Perera looks like he's either hitting out, or getting out!
    5/22/2014 7:49:12 PM
  • England edge closer! Perera is the latest to fall. Root taking the catch from a Tredwell delivery: #EngvSL

  • [wicket] Perera ct Root bld Tredwell 2
What was I saying...? Perera swats Tredwell straight to Root, who catches well at long-on. Sri Lanka eight down
    5/22/2014 7:49:58 PM
  • Over 24: Sri Lanka 123/8 (Senanayake 3, Malinga 5)
Malinga looks like he's going to have some fun out here. He charges Tredwell on a couple of occasions and swings hard and unconvincingly for runs over the cover region. 103 needed from 48 balls. England edging closer

    5/22/2014 7:57:16 PM
  • Over 25: Sri Lanka 127/8 (Senanayake 3, Malinga 9)
After roughing Malinga up with three short balls Jordan then aims at the stumps. Malinga telegraphs the full ball, though, and gets enough bat on it to reach the boundary at extra cover. Just those runs off the over
    5/22/2014 7:58:49 PM
  • Over 26: Sri Lanka 134/8 (Senanayake 10, Malinga 9)
Bopara is back on with his box of tricks but drags a slower ball short and Senanayake sweeps to the fence, despite the best efforts of Anderson, who put in a dive. Drop! Ravi then puts a sharp return catch down at the end of the over. Senanayake hit that hard but Bopara couldn't hang on. Let's hope that didn't hit Ravi's dislocated finger!
