England v Sri Lanka - 1st ODI

Live from the Kia Oval

  • [nasserhussain] The key for Sri Lanka is how they play the moving ball – a lot of their cricket has been played in Bangladesh of late. How will they cope with conditions?”

  • And what a start for Anderson! Sri Lanka review, but to no avail. Thirimanne is gone for 0! #EngvSL https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BoQd2N6CQAAaDsV.jpg
  • [wicket] Thirimanne lbw Anderson 0
The perfect start for England as Anderson gives Thirimanne a complete working over in the first over of the match. Inswingers, away swingers and then trapping him in front of middle and leg. The review is unsuccessful and Sri Lanka now have none of those left
    5/22/2014 5:39:57 PM
  • [michaelholding] A man working on pipes could not be plumber. What a waste of a review.

    5/22/2014 5:40:39 PM
  • Over 1: Sri Lanka 0/1 (Dilshan 0, Sangakkara 0)
Sangakkara, who has fond memories of this ground having made a century against England in their last meeting here. Blocks the final ball. Wicket-maiden to start. Brilliant from Anderson
    5/22/2014 5:42:34 PM
  • Over 2: Sri Lanka 7/1 (Dilshan 1, Sangakkara 4)
A big responsibility for Gurney today, sharing the new ball alongside Anderson. He starts with a wide, one of two in the over, and is made to pay when his seventh delivery is carved through the covers by Sangakkara for the first boundary of the innings. Gorgeous stroke
    5/22/2014 5:47:46 PM
  • Over 3: Sri Lanka 16/1 (Dilshan 6, Sangakkara 8)
Sri Lanka, undeterred by the early loss of Thirimanne, go on the attack against Anderson and Dilshan and Sangakkara both find the rope. Dilshan whips a leg-stump half-volley through midwicket and Sangakkara drives powerfully through mid-off. Both men look in great nick and England will want to see the back of both sharpish!
    5/22/2014 5:51:50 PM
  • Anderson celebrates Thirimanne's wicket.

    5/22/2014 5:52:34 PM
  • Over 4: Sri Lanka 17/1 (Dilshan 7, Sangakkara 8)
Gurney is bowling at a lively pace here and gets a delivery, clocked at 88mph, to rise and beat Dilshan all ends up having had a poke outside off stump. A pull for one ends the over and denies Gurney a maiden
    5/22/2014 5:54:49 PM
  • Over 5: Sri Lanka 18/1 (Dilshan 8, Sangakkara 8)
Murmours of discontent from Nasser Hussain in the Sky Sports commentary box as Cook loses second slip and places him in the ring. The wicket of Sangakkara is such a prized one that Nasser thinks it's worth the risk of the odd boundary at this stage. No boundaries or wickets in Anderson's third over, just a quick single for Dilshan
    5/22/2014 5:58:51 PM
  • Over 16: Sri Lanka 77/3 (Jayawardene 29, Mathews 2)
And so the Mahela masterclass begins... Quite brilliant batting from the Sri Lankan maestro here, reverse paddle-sweeping Tredwell for four and then driving over extra cover for the same result in an over which costs 12. Pressure now firmly on Tredwell...
    5/22/2014 7:17:17 PM
  • Over 17: Sri Lanka 86/3 (Jayawardene 34, Mathews 2)
Ravi returns but so too do the boundaries. A loopy full-toss deceives both Mahela and Buttler and the ball misses everyone and trickles for four byes. Jayawardene then shuffles across his stumps and flicks four behind square on the leg-side before adding a single. 140 required from 15 overs. Still a big ask...
    5/22/2014 7:22:00 PM
  • [wicket] Jayawardene ct Morgan bld Tredwell 35
Tredders gets his man! Coming back over the wicket, he lures Mahela into a loose flick, which goes straight to Morgan at short midwicket
    5/22/2014 7:22:54 PM
  • Another wicket for England. Jayawardene chips the ball to Morgan at midwicket off Tredwell! #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BoQ1ecGCUAAR_VH.jpg

  • Over 18: Sri Lanka 90/4 (Mathews 3, Chandimal 1)
Fair play to Tredwell there, the pressure was growing on the Man of Kent but he picked up the big fish to put England firmly in charge. Chandimal joins Mathews in the middle with Sri Lanka requiring something special
    5/22/2014 7:26:18 PM
  • Nick kicks back with a coffee having earlier pointed out the merits of Tredwell bowling over the wicket. Beefy and Athers pay credit where it is due (a touch begrudgingly!)

    5/22/2014 7:26:30 PM
  • Over 19: Sri Lanka 99/4 (Mathews 5, Chandimal 7)
A required run-rate of nine-an-over is nothing nowadays and with big-hitter Perera still to come Sri Lanka are not out of this yet. Chandimal slogs Bopara through midwicket for four in an over costing nine. 127 required from 78 balls
    5/22/2014 7:30:21 PM
  • Over 20: Sri Lanka 107/4 (Mathews 12, Chandimal 8)
The boundaries and singles continue to flow to keep this contest interesting. Mathews cracks a reverse sweep to the boundary after Tredwell had offered up a full toss to bring up the SL 100. Gripping the ball looks tricky with the outfield still very wet. 119 required from 72
    5/22/2014 7:34:13 PM
  • [wicket] Chandimal ct Buttler bld Jordan 8
Chandimal looks to send the ball towards Vauxhall tube station but can only get a faint edge through to Buttler. SL five down
    5/22/2014 7:35:27 PM
  • [wicket] Kulasekara ct Buttler 0
The decision to elevate Kulasekara above Perera doesn't pay off as he can only top-edge a Jordan short ball straight up and Buttler walks forward to claim a simple catch
    5/22/2014 7:38:20 PM
  • [davidgower] This is not a great shot – Kulasekara tried to hoick it away, the ball goes straight up in the air and Buttler takes a simple catch. He was late on the shot and got underneath it. Credit again to Jordan, hwo has used the short ball well."
