  • Over 44 - Sri Lanka 120/2 (Sangakkara 36, Jayawardene 12)
Jayawardene gets a top edge off Jordan but it goes high above the heads of the slip cordon and bounces away to the boundary for four. Just two other singles come off the over as the batsmen keep the strike rotating well.

Broad is brought back into the attack but Sri Lanka's star pair deal with the new threat well and keep the scoreboard ticking over with two more singles.

  • Over 46 - Sri Lanka 122/2 (Sangakkara 37, Jayawardene 12)
Jordan continues his spell and gets one to bounce up nastily into Jayawardene, who manages to get his bat in the way just in time. The batsman continues to defend for the rest of the over and Jordan bags another maiden.

  • Over 47 - Sri Lanka 125/2 (Sangakkara 39, Jayawardene 13)
Some uneven bounce as Broad gets one to skid low through to the wicket-keeper and then gets one to rear up unexpectedly into Jayawardene, who feathers a soft edge onto the floor to second slip. Two singles come from the over as well as a bye as Prior was unable to take the low-bouncing delivery cleanly.

  • Over 48 - Sri Lanka 132/2 (Sangakkara 40, Jayawardene 14)
England concede more extras as Sangakkara pads one past Prior and away to the boundary for four. A no-ball follows later in Jordan's over while Sangakkara and Jayawardene take two more singles from a relatively expensive over.

  • Over 49 - Sri Lanka 132/2 (Sangakkara 40, Jayawardene 14)
Big appeal from Broad as he raps one into the pads of Jayawardene, but only via a massive inside edge. The rest of the over passes off without drama as Broad completes a maiden.

England bring Anderson back into the attack but he cannot break the duo up as Sangakkara works him through backward point for two and then drives him down the ground to the boundary for four.

  • Over 51 - Sri Lanka 146/2 (Sangakkara 47, Jayawardene 17)
Jayawardene steers Broad past the slips for a couple then trades singles with Sangakkara to get back on strike. Broad then bangs one in short but also wide and the right-hander flicks it away square of the wicket for four more runs.

[50]Sangakkara flicks Anderson through midwicket and the shot has enough on it to trickle away to the boundary. That brings up his fifty and equals the world record of consecutive half-centuries in Test matches! The Sri Lanka star now has seven in a row.

  • Over 53 - Sri Lanka 152/2 (Sangakkara 51, Jayawardene 23)
Jayawardene drives Broad past mid-on for a couple and is looking very comfortable at the crease until the England bowler finds three very nice deliveries which zip past his bat and through to Prior without finding the edge.

  • Over 54 - Sri Lanka 159/2 (Sangakkara 52, Jayawardene 29)
Sangakkara works a single off Anderson, who then pitches up a half-volley for Jayawardene which the batsman duly dispatches through the gap in the covers and away to the boundary for four runs. He then runs two more after flicking it fine down to long leg.

  • Over 55 - Sri Lanka 160/2 (Sangakkara 53, Jayawardene 29)
England get their first opening in a long time as Jayawardene is surprised by Broad's bounce and the ball ricochets off his bat and up in the air before falling safe in front of gully. Just one single, courtesy of Sangakkara, comes from the over. Time for drinks.

  • Sangakkara lbw b Moeen 55
[wicket]Jayawardene edges Moeen into the ground and runs a couple when the ball bounces past slip and away into the outfield. He then sweeps the off-spinner away for four before running a single to bring Sangakkara on strike. The left-hander is surprisingly trapped on the pads by one which stayed stayed straight and given out lbw, a decision which is upheld after review. Huge wicket for England and it is Moeen who finds it.

Broad continues his spell into an eighth over and starts well with a good line and length just outside off stump to Jayawardene. However, a tired-looking ball later in the over is dispatched square of the wicket to the boundary for four, the only runs of the over.

Moeen has an lbw appeal turned down as new man Mathews runs a single. Jayawardene then gets a couple as Joe Root's throw from the boundary prompts an appeal at the striker's end, but the batsman was clearly home.

[umpire-review]Plunkett comes back into the attack to replace the tiring Broad and causes Jayawardene all sorts of trouble with a straight full toss that traps him on his pads in front of the stumps. Was there an inside edge? Cook opts for a review of the original not out decision. The technology says no edge was present but Hawk Eye gives an umpire's call verdict on hitting the stumps and Jayawardene survives the over.

Plunkett comes back on for a short blast before the finish. His first delivery is guided down to fine leg for a single by Mathews before Jayawardene cuts him towards the deep backward point boundary, but a great piece of fielding from Root coming around from third man ensures they can only run two. Two more singles and a no-ball make it a fairly profitable over for Sri Lanka.

Jayawardene calls for some new gloves from the dressing room, ensuring that Jordan's over will be the last of the day. Mathews starts the over by edging one down to the third man boundary for four before stroking one away through the covers for four more. A mishit pull then falls safe for a single and Jayawardene runs a leg by to take us to stumps.

Sri Lanka lead by 106 runs with six wickets still in hand and if Jayawardene can stick around on day four they can play themselves right back into this Test. England will look for quick wickets tomorrow morning to reassert control and force a short run chase.
