  • Spin to start this morning in the shape of left-armer Rangana Herath, he's finishing off the remainder of the over which was cut short by Plunkett's brain fade last night.

  • Over 28 - England 58/5 (Root 7, Moeen 0)
Prasad, the four-wicket hero from last night, gets first chance from the Kirkstall Lane end. Root collects the first run of the morning via a thick inside edge towards square-leg. Moeen is beaten driving outside his off-stump as Prasad continues his policy of pitching full and giving it a chance to swing.

  • Over 29 - England 58/5 (Root 7, Moeen 0)
Root living dangerously during a Herath maiden. A thin inside edge saves him from being lbw and he is then almost run-out after considering a suicidal single from the final delivery, Moeen sending him back just in time.

  • Athers is still talking about a memorable innings from Mathews yesterday:
[mikeatherton] Angelo Mathews' century yesterday is surely the greatest ever Test innings by a Sri Lanka captain?

  • Over 30 - England 59/5 (Root 7, Moeen 1)
Moeen is off the mark with a drop-and-run single into the covers. Root defends the remainder of Prasad's over, mainly staying on the back foot.

  • Over 31 - England 60/5 (Root 7, Moeen 2)
Four men round the bat - two on each side - as Herath aims at the rough outside left-hander Moeen's off-stump. Moeen inside edges a slog-sweep for a single, could have gone anywhere.

  • Over 32 - England 68/5 (Root 7, Moeen 10)
Moeen takes advantage of a loose delivery from Prasad, too short allowing the left-hander to carve it away for four. He adds a second boundary later in the over, throwing his hands into a square drive.

Herath tossing it up at Root, who dead bats the first five deliveries and then works a quick single to mid-on from the final ball.

  • Over 34 - England 75/5 (Root 9, Moeen 15)

Moeen looks less comfortable against Herath's teasing spin. He gets off strike with an inside-edged prod, again it could have gone anywhere.

Ali's now getting in a big, big stride forward to defend against Herath. He picks up a total of three runs on the off-side with nothing more than a pair of forward defensive shots.

Eranga's angling it across Moeen, trying to tempt him into chasing a drive. He resists for the time being. Maiden.

Root is saved by a thin inside edge against Herath for the second time in the morning. That's the closest Sri Lanka have come to a breakthrough. Root remains studious in defence despite plenty of noise from the close fielders. Another maiden.

[lunch]As expected, lunch moved forward to 12.30pm here at Headingley while we wait for that rain to pass. It's midsummer, so every chance this time can be made up at the end of the day if needed. Certainly no overs lost at this stage.

  • Over 46 - England 86/5 (Root 10, Moeen 22)
Sri Lanka going for the short-ball tactic that served England so well. Not sure why, although Root is in fairness troubled by a good one from Eranga that makes for his throat before glove gets there first. No short-leg, which is another oddity given the tactic being employed, and Root gets off strike.

Multi-tasking from Mathews here. Captaining the side, bowling a maiden over, and exchanging curt words with Root between each delivery.
