England v Sri Lanka - 2nd Test

Live from Headingley

  • Over 50 - England 99/5 (Root 15, Moeen 26)
Just get a sense here that the ongoing Root-Mathews discussions have disturbed Sri Lanka's rhythm more than England's number five, who is getting peppered with nasty short balls that have zero chance of getting him out. One such ricochets off his back and away for four leg-byes, prompting many of the Sri Lankans to enquire after his health. I assume. Finally the pitch-up ball arrives, and Root calmly knocks it down the ground for two.

  • Over 51 - England 100/5 (Root 15, Moeen 26)
The short ball policy continues. Not sure Sri Lanka have got this right here. All the damage has been done with the full deliveries. Mathews sends a bouncer arcing harmlessly over Moeen's head for a wide that brings up England's 100. They need 250 off 66 overs...

  • Over 52 - England 106/5 (Root 16, Moeen 30)
Couple of good short balls here in fairness, not played particularly convincingly by Root who shrewdly gets himself off strike with a quick single when he gets one in his half. Moeen ready for the inevitable short ball from Eranga, and swivel-pulls it past leg slip for four.

  • Over 53 - England 108/5 (Root 18, Moeen 30)
Mathews pitches one up and goes past Root's outside edge. Verbals. Drifts into the pads and is clipped away for a scampered two. Verbals.

Herath back into the attack. Moeen defends into the covers for a single. Root sees out the rest of the over in stout defence.

  • [betting]Can England continue to dig in? The visitors remain odds-on for the victory at 4/6 but the draw is shortening, currently at 5/4, with Joe Root 6/5 to make a half century.

Double change with Pradeep into the attack. Getting his lines wrong, though, as Moeen gets a single to midwicket before Root flicks fine down the legside for four and then adds a leg-bye from the next delivery.

  • Over 56 - England 120/5 (Root 27, Moeen 32)
Four more to Root as he leans into an overpitched delivery from Herath and steers a drive through point and away to the fence. A misfield at mid-off allows Root a single, and the runs are just starting to come a little more freely now. They couldn't, could they? (No.)

  • Root c Thirimanne b Pradeep 31[wicket]

Root edges low to gully to end his 108-ball stay. He was squared up by a decent delivery and Thirimanne held a nice catch.

  • Over 57 - England 124/6 (Moeen 32, Prior 0)
Prior doesn't have to play at his first delivery, Pradeep shoving it down the leg side. Sri Lanka have 60 overs remaining to get the four wickets they require.

  • [andrewstrauss] Sri Lanka have made a significant step forward in their pursuit for victory by getting Joe Root out. Matt Prior now comes in having previously batted a day out in Auckland to secure a draw, they need the same from him here...

Moeen sweeps from outside off-stump for a single and Prior is solid in defence, getting on the front foot throughout the remainder of Herath's over

Moeen survives a maiden from Pradeep, the last delivery of which he inside edges into his pad and just short of wicketkeeper Chandimal.

  • Over 60 - England 132/6 (Moeen 39, Prior 1)
Prior is off the mark with an inside-edged single. Herath over-pitches and Moeen drives through the covers for four with ease. The Worcestershire left-hander then advances to drive for two more from the final ball of the over.

  • Over 61 - England 145/6 (Moeen 44, Prior 6)
Pradeep's having a few problems with his run-up, three no-balls in a row turning it into a marathon over costing 13 runs in total. Moeen drives square for his seventh four, although Pradeep also produces a couple of full swing deliveries, including one that almost beat the left-hander's drive. Time for drinks.

Moeen runs a single down behind square on the off-side to keep the strike and deny Eranga a maiden. Looks like Herath is switching ends.

Herath gets his chance from the Football Stand End. Moeen skips down the pitch and lofts over mid-on for four. Lovely shot. Herath sneaks one past Moeen's outside edge later in the over, no need to be poking the bat at that.

  • 'Not out on all counts' - England 160-6
  • Over 71 - England 160/6 (Moeen 52, Prior 10)
Big appeal for a bat-pad catch at leg slip off Moeen, but batsman and umpire are both shaking their heads. Mathews reviews it. Replays, Hot Spot and Snicko all indicate the ball has come straight off the pad, while Hawk-Eye has the ball missing leg comfortably to take lbw out of the equation. Fairly risk-free review for Sri Lanka: they'll get it back in nine overs' time.

  • Prior c Silva b Prasad 10

[wicket]Five for Prasad as Prior fends a short ball into the hands of Kaushal Silva at short-leg. Third umpire takes an age to decide whether or not it's a no-ball but eventually rules in the bowler's favour and Prior has to go.
