  • Athers reviews a topsy-turvy second day...
[mikeatherton] It's still a reasonable lead for England, given the pitch and the ball nipping around. If they can extend the lead to 100 that will put them in a strong position tomorrow

  • Over 98 - England 311/5 (Moeen 0, Prior 0)
Moeen Ali takes strike for the first time and is taking no chances, leaving the ball wherever possible during a maiden over from Eranga.

  • Over 99 - England 311/5 (Moeen 0, Prior 0)
Mathews keeps Prior under pressure with five dot balls before the England wicket-keeper tries to drive down the ground, offering up a return catch to the Sri Lanka captain. It was a tough, tough chance but he got his hand to it at full stretch and it will go down as a drop.

[wicket]Another wicket! Moeen gets off the mark with a solid cover drive for two but comes unstuck when he tries the same shot with Eranga coming round the wicket. He feathers an edge through to Chandimal and England lose another one!

  • Over 101 - England 313/6 (Prior 0, Jordan 0)
England look content to see this out to stumps with no further casualties, Prior going on the defensive as Mathews completes a maiden over.

  • Over 102 - England 315/6 (Prior 1, Jordan 1)
Jordan and Prior both get off the mark, the former because of an overthrow and the latter after working Eranga past point.

  • Over 103 - England 318/6 (Prior 2, Jordan 3)
Sri Lanka have their tails up and the returning Prasad appeals heartily for lbw, but the ball was clearly heading past Prior's leg stump. After Prior runs a single there is a much more realistic chance when Jordan drives to the fielder at cover point, but he cannot take the catch above his head and the England pair run two.

  • Over 104 - England 320/6 (Prior 3, Jordan 4)
Pradeep will bowl the last over of the day. Prior guides a single through midwicket and Jordan dabs another run square of the wicket on the off side to complete the day's play.

[close]So that brings day two to a close at Headingley. England are in the driving seat with a lead of 63 but Sri Lanka have kept themselves in the game with a successful final session. The day will mainly be remembered for Sam Robson's maiden Test century but there is still plenty to play for when the action resumes on Sunday.

  • Some pointers ahead of day three from Benedict [benedictbermange]:
    • Quite a few of England’s team have had early success scoring centuries. Of the current team, Cook and Prior scored centuries on debut, Robson & Ballance managed it in their second Tests, and Ian Bell in his third.  In addition, in December at Perth, Ben Stokes also scored a century in his second Test.
    • Since 1989, England have fielded only two Test teams born entirely in England:  The first was at The Oval against South Africa in 2003 and then at Galle against Sri Lanka later the same year.
    • The average number of English-born players in the 295 England Test teams since 1989 is 7.86.  By way of a comparison, the average number of Australian-born players in the 282 Australian Test teams since 1989 has been 10.84.
    • Only two teams have ever won Tests at Leeds having trailed on first innings by more than 40 runs.

  • Over 105 - England 325/6 (Prior 3, Jordan 9)
Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews takes the first over of the day and sees his first ball disappear for four as Jordan chops it away behind square to the ropes. After four balls a dab into the off side for a single completes the over.

  • Over 106 - England 327/6 (Prior 3, Jordan 11)
Shaminda Eranga is Sri Lanka's other opening bowler today. He gets one to seam violently off the surface but fortunately for Jordan it cuts away from his bat and through to the wicket-keeper. Jordan then flicks one through midwicket for two runs, the only scoring of the over.

  • Over 107 - England 327/6 (Prior 3, Jordan 11)
Prior takes strike for the first time today and keeps a straight bat to Mathews, whose tidy line and length earns him a maiden over.

  • Over 108 - England 334/6 (Prior 4, Jordan 16) [missed-chance]
Jordan works Eranga away for a single before Prior pulls the seamer down to fine leg for another run. Jordan then has two narrow escapes, playing and missing at a ball outside off stump and edging a full and swinging one between wicket-keeper and first slip and away to the boundary for four! Another ball whizzes past his edge before the over is out and Jordan will be content merely to see that one out with his wicket intact.
