  • Over 111 - England 344/8 (Prior 8, Plunkett 0)
Liam Plunkett comes in at No 10 and just gets his bat out of the way in time as Mathews finds some extra nip on a straight one.

  • Over 112 - England 349/8 (Prior 11, Plunkett 2)
Prior strokes two runs through the covers and then guides a single down to deep backward point. Plunkett comes on strike and manages to get off the mark before the end of the over as he pushes one through the leg side.

  • Plunkett b Mathews 2
[wicket]Prior works a single towards midwicket to bring up the 350 for England before Mathews cleans Plunkett up with a ripper. It pitched way outside off stump but seamed back dramatically into the tailender. Plunkett could do nothing as his middle stump was uprooted.

  • The pitch is breaking up. Athers remarks:
[mikeatherton] That went like an off break! Plunkett can't believe it. When he takes his pads off and starts thinking like a bowler, he won't mind that

  • Over 114 - England 351/9 (Prior 13, Anderson 0)
Prior takes a single off the fourth delivery of Eranga's over, giving Anderson the strike for the final two balls. He plays and misses at the first but gets solidly in behind the second one to block it back with a straight bat.

  • Over 115 - England 356/9 (Prior 18, Anderson 0)
Prior comes down the wicket to Mathews and smashes an on drive away to the boundary for four runs. He then flicks a single through the leg side to give Anderson a couple more balls to survive. The No 11 swings and misses when attempting a big heave into the off side before wisely leaving the second delivery.

  • Anderson c&b Eranga 0
[wicket]Prior lofts another over mid-on and this time watches the ball fly over the ropes for six! That takes England's lead past 100. He then misjudges another charge down the wicket to Eranga and flicks the ball high up in the air, but it falls short of the man running in from deep square and the batsmen run two. A single then gives Anderson two more to deal with, but he fails this time! Eranga rears one up into his bat and takes the easiest of return catches.

[davidlloyd] There is something in this pitch to work with and that lead of 108 is very useful for England. That was a nasty ball (to finish the innings)

[end-of-innings]So England have a first-innings lead of 108, a healthy advantage but one they thought may have been a bit bigger when they were sitting on 311-3. Sri Lanka have done well to clean up the middle and lower order for minimal damage and will now look to dig in with the bat for the rest of the day.

So, can Sri Lanka maintain the momentum they have gained with the ball this morning or is there enough in this pitch for England to get stuck in with some wickets straight away? Sri Lanka's second innings is about to start.

  • Over 1 - Sri Lanka 0/0 (Karunaratne0, Silva 0)
Anderson takes the new ball with three slips and a gully flanking opener Dimuth Karunaratne, who leaves where he can and gets a good, solid straight bat on the other balls as England open with a maiden.

  • Over 3 - Sri Lanka 4/0 (Karunaratne 4, Silva 0)
[dropped-catch]Sri Lanka play their first offensive shot as Karunaratne pushes a high cut past backward point and away to the boundary for four. The left-hander looks content to see out the rest of Anderson's over but edges the last ball right to Jordan at second slip. It is a straightforward chance but Jordan can't sort his hands out and the catch goes down! Huge, huge let-off for the opener.

Silva works Anderson away through midwicket but it is not struck strongly enough to reach the boundary and instead the batsmen run three. Karunaratne continues his subdued play when given the strike back and there are no further runs from the over.

  • [betting]Sri Lanka have come in from as long as 12/1 to 10/3 as they look to reduce England's healthy lead, with another draw deemed unlikely now at 7/1. Karunaratne is considered the most likely to be the first man out for the tourists at 8/11, with Anderson rated the favourite to be the leading wicket taker in the innings at 11/4.

  • Over 12 - Sri Lanka 22/0 (Karunaratne 16, Silva 6)
The first change of bowling sees Jordan brought on to replace Broad. He has four slips in and opens up with a maiden over as Silva cannot fashion any scoring opportunities from the bowler's decent line and length.

[lunch]And that is it for the morning session on day three at Headingley. England's tail was rolled out in the morning before Sri Lanka's opening pair survived until the interval, although they did so without reducing the first-innings deficit significantly.

Anderson and Prior go up for a caught behind appeal but replays shown the ball brushed Karunaratne's leg rather than the bat or glove. There are no dramas for the remainder of the over, which ends up as a maiden.
