England v Sri Lanka - 4th ODI

Live from Lord's

  • Over 22 - England 88/2 (Ballance 41, Root 34)
Not sure how much longer England can bat like this given the target they're chasing. Already asking a lot of the hitters down the order.
    5/31/2014 3:25:15 PM
  • England progress to 93-2 but no boundaries for Ballance or Root since the 9th over. Still plenty of batting to come!

  • Over 23 - England 93/2 (Ballance 42, Root 38)
Something a bit different at least as Root reverse-sweeps Priyanjan for a couple. End result is an eminently predictable five runs from the over. No boundary for England since the ninth over.
    5/31/2014 3:27:19 PM
  • WICKET! Ballance c Sangakkara b Mendis 42

[wicket]Ballance goes, attempting a reverse-sweep and succeedingly only in guiding the ball straight into Sangakkara's gloves off the face of the bat.
    5/31/2014 3:28:52 PM
  • OUT: End of the third wicket partnership as Ballance caught behind. England 94-3.

  • Over 24 - England 98/3 (Root 39, Morgan 4)
Morgan busy right from the start of his innings, paddle-sweeping Mendis over Sangakkara's head for a couple after picking up two runs with a flick into the legside.
    5/31/2014 3:32:20 PM
  • Good luck @SkySportsBoxing tonight! We will be watching... #FrochGroves2
  • Over 25 - England 101/3 (Root 40, Morgan 6)
Hundred up for England as Morgan slaps a short ball out to deep cover off Senanayake for two. Morgan struggles to pick Senanayake but got that away without much fuss.
    5/31/2014 3:35:55 PM
  • Over 26 - England 104/3 (Root 42, Morgan 7)
England have now gone 17 overs without a boundary. In pursuit of 301. It's an interesting tactic.
    5/31/2014 3:38:34 PM
  • In overs 11 to 26, England scored either 3 runs, 4, 5 or 6 ... the run was broken in the 27th over - scoring 2
  • Still 23 overs to go & wickets in hand, but a worrying length of time since an England boundary. Hosts 106-3

  • Over 27 - England 106/3 (Root 43, Morgan 8)
Boundaries: none. Required rate: spiralling. England are going to have to go after someone soon. They can't go on like this.
    5/31/2014 3:42:12 PM
  • OUT! End of Root as he goes for 43. Run rate up to over 8.5 as England 107-4.

  • WICKET! Root c Mendis b Mathews 43

[wicket]Root decides Mathews is the man who has to go, but top-edges a pull shot to long-leg where Mendis takes a straightforward catch. Going to take something sensational for England to get near this target now.
    5/31/2014 3:43:58 PM
  • Over 28 - England 109/4 (Morgan 10, Bopara 0)
Play and a miss from Bopara to end an excellent Mathews over. He's got eye-catching figures now of 5-1-15-1.
    5/31/2014 3:47:55 PM
  • Still no sign of an England boundary, as the required run rate continues to grow. England now 111-4

  • WICKET! Morgan st Sangakkara b Senanayake 12

[wicket]Another one gone. Morgan tries to sweep but drags his foot out of his crease and is comprehensively stumped after missing the ball completely.
    5/31/2014 3:49:40 PM
  • OUT! Morgan the latest to depart for England after good work from behind the stumps. Hosts now five wickets down.

  • [davidgower] England in more disarray! Morgan takes a step down and there was no way back from there. He was beaten in the flight.

    5/31/2014 3:52:13 PM
  • Over 29 - England 113/5 (Bopara 1, Buttler 1)
England have now gone the entire length of a Twenty20 innings without scoring a boundary. Astonishing statistic in a chase of this size.
    5/31/2014 3:53:27 PM
  • Over 30 - England 118/5 (Bopara 6, Buttler 1)
Couple of couples for Bopara off Mathews before he runs the ball down to third-man for a single. The mood is about as venomous as it ever gets at Lord's. There is a definite murmur of aggrieved grumbling.
    5/31/2014 3:57:14 PM
  • In other news... no-one at the ground has come close to matching Wayne, Stuart Broad or Charlotte Edwards in the cricket bat and ball keepy-up challenge...

    5/31/2014 3:58:00 PM
  • Over 31 - England 125/5 (Bopara 8, Buttler 6)
A BOUNDARY! A BOUNDARY! ENGLAND HAVE HIT A BOUNDARY! Jos Buttler is an actual hero, reverse-sweeping Senanayake to the rope to end a wait of 21.4 overs.
    5/31/2014 3:58:59 PM
  • Over 32 - England 134/5 (Bopara 14, Buttler 9)
Big lbw appeal against Bopara as he tries to sweep. The umpire signals runs not leg-byes, and Sri Lanka want to review but Marais Erasmus is not letting them go upstairs. Presumably because they were out of time, but that was because the ball ran away for three runs. Stuff was happening. Unreasonable to include that as time elapsing for the review, surely. Anyway, while the ball did hit the forearm rather than glove or bat and therefore could be out lbw, Hawk-Eye shows it was missing leg so Sri Lanka have been saved from themselves there.
    5/31/2014 4:04:14 PM
  • Sri Lanka unhappy that the LBW appeal against Bopara not given, but looks like the right decision. England now 143-5.

  • Over 33 - England 144/5 (Bopara 15, Buttler 17)
Two fours in succession from Buttler, the first driven sweetly through the covers, the second one of those outrageous walk-across-the-stumps-and-flick-it-to-fine-leg shots of his that probably needs a better name.
    5/31/2014 4:08:12 PM
  • Over 34 - England 153/5 (Bopara 15, Buttler 26)
Two more fours for Buttler driven first through and then over extra-cover off Mendis. Maybe this was the plan all along.
    5/31/2014 4:12:02 PM
  • Over 35 - England 159/5 (Bopara 16, Buttler 31)
Buttler continues to bat like he's the only England player who's realised the target is 301 not 201, steering the last ball of Kulasekara's over past point for four more.
    5/31/2014 4:17:10 PM
  • Must have been a very short conversation.. LoL..RT @JustAnuw : Dad telling me all the glories of @RusselArnold69 :')”
  • Powerplay called with 15overs to go. Buttler and Bopara going well with 142 needed for England. 159-5

  • Over 36 - England 166/5 (Bopara 16, Buttler 36)
Malinga back for the Powerplay. Buttler works him into the legside for a pair of twos before a bouncer sails over his head and is signalled wide.
    5/31/2014 4:26:33 PM
  • Wow... Superb from Butler!! Wonderful fifty.. !!
  • Over 37 - England 180/5 (Bopara 16, Buttler 50)
[50]Buttler flicks Kulasekara to fine-leg for four and then smashes a huge six over long-off to reach his 50 in just 34 balls. Probably a futile effort, but he has hit the only eight boundaries since the ninth over.
    5/31/2014 4:30:11 PM
  • Important 50 from Buttler, partnership worth 76 as England need 114 from 12 overs.

  • Froch or Groves? Split decision from @SkyCricket commentators! Over to you, @SkySportsBoxing ! #FrochGroves2 ...

  • Over 38 - England 187/5 (Bopara 20, Buttler 53)
Good scampering from Bopara as Malinga's over goes for seven runs. England still just about in this thanks to Buttler.
    5/31/2014 4:34:59 PM
  • Right - back to the Unfinished Business here at Lord's...
    5/31/2014 4:35:24 PM
  • Over 39 - England 197/5 (Bopara 27, Buttler 56)
Ten runs from this Senanayake over without a boundary. Some good placement and fine scampering from the batsmen, plus some slightly shoddy work in the field from the Sri Lankans.
    5/31/2014 4:38:30 PM
  • Hmmm..... 92 in 10 overs with Ravi and Josh playing superb cricket... It's getting tense.. SL better sharpen up.!!
  • Top batting from Buttler means England move to 209-5 & need 92 from the final 10 overs. Watch the finale live on SS2

  • If England can chase this target down, it'll be there highest
  • Over 40 - England 209/5 (Bopara 28, Buttler 67)
This is an astonishing innings from Buttler. He's dragged England back into this match from absolutely nowhere. Malinga is swatted over deep square-leg for a huge six and then flicked away past fine-leg for four more. England make 50/0 from the Powerplay. Had I backed the favourite in the runs v wickets competition, I'd have lost my money.
    5/31/2014 4:43:11 PM
  • [ianbotham] If England keep going at this rate they will win with an over to spare!”

    5/31/2014 4:43:37 PM
  • Over 41 - England 220/5 (Bopara 38, Buttler 68)
A brilliant diving stop from Priyanjan on the square-leg boundary saves two runs, but he can do nothing to stop a pull shot two balls later. Another double-digits over for England, who have got the required rate down from 10 to nine in the last half-dozen overs.
    5/31/2014 4:46:57 PM
  • Incredible piece of fielding saves a boundary, but England move to 220-5. 81 needed from 9overs.
