  • WELCOME TO LORD’S…
…where it will be hotter than Rio de Janeiro as England and Sri Lanka contest the opening day of this eagerly-awatied Test summer. The 2014 football World Cup may be kicking off later but the Home of Cricket is sold out for the first three days and while the MCC Members aren’t quite at fever pitch yet, Lord’s is buzzing with anticipation after a spicy finish to the ODI series.

  • England skipper Alastair Cook was in bullish mood at yesterday’s press conference and while he stopped short of launching into a John Barnes-style rap, the sentiment at the start of a new era for English Test cricket was along very similar lines of ‘Three Lions on my chest/I know we can't go wrong…’ Here’s that interview in full.

  • Thanks for that ,Nass! Right, so we know Moeen Ali will play and he's certainly been talking a good game recently - as well as scoring runs for fun. Ahead of the toss and the official confirmation of the teams, check out what Moeen had to say earlier this week...

  • [ianbotham] There are some small bare areas on the pitch and I just wonder if that will bring a little bit of uneven bounce as the game goes on, so I would have had a bat first.”

  • So, what do you make of Angelo Mathew's decision? Tell us at @SkyCricket. Here's what Athers makes of it...

[mikeatherton] It is probably grassier than some of the pitches you normally get on the first day of a Lord’s Test. I think it is quite dry underneath – there are already one or two fine cracks emerging from underneath the thin layer of grass. Myself, looking up, with blue skies overhead I think I would have wanted to bat first.

  • First step done well. We've chosen the best XI. Cook Robson Ballance Bell Root Mo Prior Broad CJ Plunkett Jimmy #EngvSL @SkyCricket
  • [stats] From 1884 to 1980 Lord’s hosted 71 Tests in which captains chose to bat on 66 occasions. Since then, in 56 Tests, captains have batted on 26 occasions and bowled on 30."

  • QUICK REFRESHER
The last time these two sides met in a Test series in England, back in 2011, the home side came out on top 1-0 after demolishing Sri Lanka for 82 at Cardiff. Here’s a quick refresher of that series.

  • Over 1 – Eng 7-0 (Cook 4 Robson 0)
[4]Nuwan Kulasekara takes the new ball from the Pavillian End – garnering a bit of early swing movement but just at a gentle pace and after a couple of leaves Cook cuts one away to the boundary. Then a big chance! Cook catches an edge but it’s dropped woefully by wicketkeeper Jayawardene – umpire initially signals runs bout changes to byes as it was clear Cook missed it.
    6/12/2014 10:06:45 AM
  • Over 2 – Eng 7-0 (Cook 4 Robson 0)
Nuwan Pradeep kicks off at the Nursery End and is a bit more lively than his fellow opening strike bowler, and he makes Cook dig out a full straight one that swings in at him – but the England skipper survives and it’s a maiden.

    6/12/2014 10:10:34 AM
  • Over 3 – Eng 11-0 (Cook 7 Robson 1)
Sam Robson finally faces his first ball in Test cricket at the start of the third over. He pushes away a single to get off the mark and Cook nicks a two and another single off Kulasekara.

    6/12/2014 10:14:38 AM
  • [wicket] Robson 1 c Jayawardene b Pradeep

Robson finds an edge and this time the keeper makes no mistake snaffling that up and the debutant walks for just one.

    6/12/2014 10:18:25 AM
  • OUT! Robson goes after one outside off and he's caught behind for one. 14-1. bit.ly/1oWJNGB #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bp7C5WLCEAI-WcE.jpg

  • Over 4 – Eng 14-1 (Cook 10 Ballance 0)
A punch from Cook into the off side produces three after a slightly laboured chase from Harath. Then Robson’s first Test innings comes to an end as he fends at a good ball from Pradeep but just edges it through to Jayawardene to cue silence ringing around Lord’s as England lose their first wicket.

    6/12/2014 10:23:37 AM
  • [4]Over 5 – Eng 18-1 (Cook 14 Ballance 0)
Cook gets four off a swinging ball from Kulasekara, who’s not very quick but is getting plenty of movement early on this morning. Gary Ballance is in but doesn’t face a ball in his first over at the crease.

    6/12/2014 10:26:00 AM
  • Over 6 – Eng 22-1 (Cook 17 Ballance 1)
Ballance shuts the face on his third ball faced and squeezes it to midwicket for a single to get off the mark. Cook has a fend at a wide one but thankfully for him doesn’t find an edge, before he prods another out to Harath and again gets three runs – Harath’s done a lot of running today already, albeit not at an amazingly quick pace!

    6/12/2014 10:28:52 AM
  • [wicket] Cook 17 b Kulasekara

Cook going for the cut he loves so much but this time he gets it all wrong and can only chop the ball on to his own stumps and he has to go.

    6/12/2014 10:30:24 AM
  • WICKET! Disaster for Cook as he attempts a cut and edges onto his own stumps. 22-2. bit.ly/1oWJNGB #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bp7FFGXCAAE85J-.jpg

  • [nasserhussain] He’s been searching for the cut shot. Sri Lanka have generally pitched the ball up – when you are out of nick those things generally happen.

  • Here's the attempted cut from Cook that saw him lose his wicket: bit.ly/1oWJNGB #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bp7FlGOCcAAzua1.jpg

  • Over 7 – Eng 26-2 (Bell 0 Ballance 1)
Kulasekara gets his first Test wicket in England his third Test, and it’s the England captain as he tries the cut but the ball’s not bounced enough and is also a bit too close for comfort as he just chops on. Ian Bell is the new man in and is lucky not to follow Cook straight back with a nervous prod – he does get four leg byes for his trouble two balls later though.

    6/12/2014 10:36:31 AM
  • Over 8 – Eng 33-2 (Bell 0 Ballance 8)
Ballance whips Pradeep away for four, then hits a straight drive down the ground for three – just inches from a second boundary of the over and a good response from him. Bell is beaten all ends up by a jaffa from Pradeep at the end of the over though – straight, good length, just leaves him late but too good to even find an edge.

    6/12/2014 10:39:06 AM
  • Over 18 - England 70-2 (Bell 24, Ballance 19)
Maiden over from Eranga, but not the best. Mainly involves Bell watching the ball going harmlessly through to Prasanna Jayawardene.
    6/12/2014 11:28:41 AM
  • Ballance c P Jayawardene b Pradeep 23

[wicket]Good session for Sri Lanka now as Ballance brings up the 50 partnership with a clip off his pads through square-leg but then edges an attempted drive through to the keeper.
