England v Sri Lanka, First Test

  • Over 6 – Eng 22-1 (Cook 17 Ballance 1)
Ballance shuts the face on his third ball faced and squeezes it to midwicket for a single to get off the mark. Cook has a fend at a wide one but thankfully for him doesn’t find an edge, before he prods another out to Harath and again gets three runs – Harath’s done a lot of running today already, albeit not at an amazingly quick pace!

  • [wicket] Cook 17 b Kulasekara

Cook going for the cut he loves so much but this time he gets it all wrong and can only chop the ball on to his own stumps and he has to go.

    6/12/2014 10:30:24 AM
  • WICKET! Disaster for Cook as he attempts a cut and edges onto his own stumps. 22-2. #EngvSL

  • [nasserhussain] He’s been searching for the cut shot. Sri Lanka have generally pitched the ball up – when you are out of nick those things generally happen.

  • Here's the attempted cut from Cook that saw him lose his wicket: #EngvSL

  • Over 7 – Eng 26-2 (Bell 0 Ballance 1)
Kulasekara gets his first Test wicket in England his third Test, and it’s the England captain as he tries the cut but the ball’s not bounced enough and is also a bit too close for comfort as he just chops on. Ian Bell is the new man in and is lucky not to follow Cook straight back with a nervous prod – he does get four leg byes for his trouble two balls later though.

    6/12/2014 10:36:31 AM
  • Over 8 – Eng 33-2 (Bell 0 Ballance 8)
Ballance whips Pradeep away for four, then hits a straight drive down the ground for three – just inches from a second boundary of the over and a good response from him. Bell is beaten all ends up by a jaffa from Pradeep at the end of the over though – straight, good length, just leaves him late but too good to even find an edge.

    6/12/2014 10:39:06 AM
  • [4]Over 9 – Eng 37-2 (Bell 0 Ballance 12)
Ballance this time is beaten by movement from Kulasekara – no real pace but the length and movement is causing problems. There’s plenty of grass on this Lord’s wicket as well, probably more than England’s footballers will see in Manaus on Saturday….Ballance somehow finds a gap between six fielders at slip and gully to find the fence off the last ball.

    6/12/2014 10:43:53 AM
  • Over 10 – Eng 40-2 (Bell 1 Ballance 13)
After a leg bye, Bell finally gets a first run off the bat off his 10th ball faced with a single getting him off the mark. Balance also adds another single as these two try and settle the ship a bit.

    6/12/2014 10:48:59 AM
  • Ten overs of the Test done so it must be pork pie o'clock. @BumbleCricket does the honours. #engvsl Eng 40-2

  • Over 11 – Eng 41-2 (Bell 2 Ballance 13)
Another single for Bell to start the over. Kulasekara keeps it tight from there on in though, with that ball still moving around a fair bit for him and still causing a few problems.

    6/12/2014 10:53:40 AM
  • Over 12 – Eng 48-2 (Bell 8 Ballance 13)[4]
Change of bowling with Shaminda Eranga coming on and he starts brilliantly, for England, with a no-ball that Bell drives away for four. Bell repeats the shot again but this time picks up just a couple.

    6/12/2014 10:59:02 AM
  • [4]Over 13 – Eng 52-2 (Bell 8 Ballance 17)
Great ball from Kulasekara first up, moving out wide on the crease and getting enough away swing to Balance to find an edge, but it drops just short of slip as the Yorkshire left-hander gets away with it. He makes the most of the life as crushes a cut shot away for four, although Silva got a diving hand to it but had no chance.

  • Over 14 - England 55-2 (Bell 10, Ballance 18)
Eranga bowling with reasonable pace here, but it's the movement that has caused England batsmen problems this morning. Bell gets a single off a thick inside edge, while the last two deliveries are both short of a length. Ballance punches past cover for one, and Bell adds another run with a controlled pull shot to deep square-leg.
    6/12/2014 11:11:59 AM
  • Over 15 - England 59-2 (Bell 14, Ballance 18)
[4]Lovely stuff from Bell here. Perfectly decent, good-length delivery from Mathews, but Bell gets that cover-drive out again and eases the ball away to the ropes. He is so good to watch.
    6/12/2014 11:15:10 AM
  • Over 16 - England 65-2 (Bell 19, Ballance 19)
The two wickets down are a bit of a blow, but England are scoring at a good old rate. Six runs off this Eranga, ending with Bell getting three through cover using the edge of his bat. Show off.
    6/12/2014 11:20:22 AM
  • Over 17 - England 70-2 (Bell 24, Ballance 19)
[4]When Bell bats like this, you can almost forget all the other bad things this England team has done in the last six months. Too full from Mathews, and Bell drives it back past him with no effort for great reward. Shot of the morning.

  • Over 18 - England 70-2 (Bell 24, Ballance 19)
Maiden over from Eranga, but not the best. Mainly involves Bell watching the ball going harmlessly through to Prasanna Jayawardene.
    6/12/2014 11:28:41 AM
  • Ballance c P Jayawardene b Pradeep 23

[wicket]Good session for Sri Lanka now as Ballance brings up the 50 partnership with a clip off his pads through square-leg but then edges an attempted drive through to the keeper.
    6/12/2014 11:33:03 AM
  • WICKET: Ballance is the third man down after edging behind for 23. England 74-3. #EngvSL

  • Over 19 - England 74-3 (Bell 24, Root 0)
Joe Root in at number five for England. The run-rate is excellent for England, but they have now lost three key wickets to loose shots this morning.
    6/12/2014 11:36:21 AM
  • .@SkyFootball 's very own Jamie Redknapp has joined @BeefyBotham & @ShaneWarne in the comms box for a third man stint!

  • Over 20 - England 75-3 (Bell 25, Root 0)
Bell takes a quick single from the first ball of Eranga's over before Root sees out the rest. Soft hands see him send an edge safely short of the slip cordon.
    6/12/2014 11:39:49 AM
  • Over 21 - England 80-3 (Bell 26, Root 4)
[4]Root up and running in fine style with the sort of cover-drive you'd more normally associate with his current batting partner. Root primarily a back-foot player but transferred his weight nicely into that shot to pick up four. Pradeep responds as fast bowlers do, with a couple of bouncers. Bit loopy, though, and easily evaded by Root.
    6/12/2014 11:44:46 AM
  • Over 22 - England 87-3 (Bell 33, Root 4)
[4]Bell making things looks outrageously easy in that way he does, very often before inexplicably chipping the ball straight to extra-cover. Another gorgeous drive beats mid-off's dive and skids across the pristine outfield for four more, before a clip off the toes and some eager scampering brings three.
    6/12/2014 11:49:55 AM
  • Over 23 - England 95-3 (Bell 41, Root 4)
[4]Bell making this look so easy now, you just wonder what daft way he might find to get out. Two more boundaries in this over, the first clipped fine of long-leg and the second an attempted bouncer that comes on so slowly that Bell has time to wait and pick his spot in front of square.

  • Over 24 - England 96-3 (Bell 41, Root 5)
First over of spin today from Herath. Tidy enough start. No real turn for him, but he's dropped instantly on to a line and length and gives up just a single from the over, nudged into the legside by Root.
    6/12/2014 11:58:24 AM

  • England are 98-3 at lunch on day one of the first test at Lord's. #EngvSL

  • Over 25 - England 98-3 (Bell 41, Root 6)
Tidy bowling from Pradeep (same can't be said for his hair) to end a morning session that has gone Sri Lanka's way with England's top three all dismissed. Bell, though, is showing all his class.

  • Lunch
[lunch]Three loose shots from England leading to three wickets, but there does appear to be a desire to be more aggressive and the run-rate is healthy. Sri Lanka found some swing and movement early in the session, but the green tinge is already burning off the pitch and these do look glorious conditions for batting.
