England v Sri Lanka, First Test

Lord's

  • Over 44 - Sri Lanka 148/1 (Silva 63, Sangakkara 39)
No doubt that Silva definitely played at one in the Broad over, sparring at a delivery that moved away slightly having been sent down from wide of the crease.
Another maiden for England. Weather improving, sun threatening to return to cricket HQ.
    6/14/2014 10:18:01 AM
  • A brisk breeze blowing from the direction of the Nursery Ground is keeping the clouds moving.

    6/14/2014 10:18:16 AM
  • Over 45 - Sri Lanka 149/1 (Silva 63, Sangakkara 40)
The run of dots is broken when Sangakkara defends firmly in front of point, allowing him to get a comfortable single.
Silva nicks the next ball, only it doesn't come close to carrying to Cook at first slip. Only concern for the England skipper was taking one on the knee cap as it bounced up. Catchers can't come up too much closer, yet that delivery still fell comfortably short of Cook.

  • Thoughts on Cook's catching record for England? Cautious start from Sri Lanka this morning. #EngvSL #SkyCricket http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFW4NjCUAAfKEv.png

  • Over 46 - Sri Lanka 149/1 (Silva 63, Sangakkara 40)
More good stuff from Broad, another maiden.
He can't quite tempt Sangakkara to nibble away outside off. This partnership slowly, slowly plodding towards three figures.
    6/14/2014 10:27:24 AM
  • Over 47 - Sri Lanka 149/1 (Silva 63, Sangakkara 40)
Silva, looking smart in a short sleeved jumper, with Sri Lanka having those retro-style versions that look whiter than white and knitted by your grandmother, sees out an Anderson maiden.
He did well to avoid a bouncer to start with, though for such a little fella he didn't have to duck too far down to get out of the way. The Burnley Express needs to be fuller - edge came this morning when he pitched it right up there, getting the batsman driving.
    6/14/2014 10:31:14 AM
  • Just nine runs added to the overnight total so far from Sri Lanka this morning. Moved to 149-1 #EngvSL #SkyCricket http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFYZuCCQAAu9b3.png

  • Over 48 - Sri Lanka 150/1 (Silva 63, Sangakkara 41)
Sri Lanka's 150 comes up when a Sangakkara cover drive is only half stopped by the fielder in fairly close.
England have a clear plan for Kumar - push the ball across him and get him driving into a packed off-side field.
    6/14/2014 10:33:57 AM
  • [wicket] WICKET! Silva c Prior b Anderson 63
Anderson surprises Silva with a superb short ball! It darts back in at the opener and runs off his bat, which is up like a periscope having drawn his head out of the way.
Prior stays sharp to take the catch behind the stumps.
    6/14/2014 10:36:57 AM
  • [nasserhussain] Excellent use of the short ball there from Anderson, it just came down the slope at Silva who will consider himself unlucky as it came off the back of the bat. This means we’re going to have the two legends together – Mahela Jayawardene will join his big buddy Kumar Sangakkara.

    6/14/2014 10:37:59 AM
  • Delight for Anderson & England as Silva is caught behind by Prior. Sri Lanka 151-2 with Jayawardene the new man in. http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFZ4afCUAAMh7Q.png

  • [benedictbermange] If Sangakkara and Jayawardene add 11 runs together, they will become the fourth set of partners to add more than six thousand runs together in Test cricket."

    6/14/2014 10:38:43 AM
  • Over 49 - Sri Lanka 151/2 (Sangakkara 42, Jayawardene 0)
England had two men on the drive for the start of Anderson's over with Sangakkara on strike, as well as a sweeper on each side of the field.
There's a slip and a gully, as well as a point. Anderson duly runs up from around the wicket and bowls too straight, letting Sangakkara tuck a comfortable single into a leg-side space. Still, it put Silva on strike and the bowler duly removed him, instead. Mahela Jayawardene is in at four and beaten by his second delivery, one short enough to tempt him to spar at it. Prior's catch was his 61st off Anderson, a new record for a seamer-wicketkeeper combination for England.
    6/14/2014 10:41:23 AM
  • [benedictbermange] Here are those other openers:
Dravid,  Tendulkar (6,920, at 50.51); Greenidge,  Haynes (6,482 at 47.31); Hayden,  Langer (6,081 at 51.53); Jayawardene,  Sangakkara (5,989 at 55.97); Cook,  Strauss (5,253 at 40.40)."

    6/14/2014 10:44:05 AM
  • Over 50 - Sri Lanka 153/2 (Sangakkara 44, Jayawardene 0)
Broad does bang one in at Sangakkara, which is pulled away well in front of square, actually through mid-wicket, for a couple.
However, it is only a rare change from the plan, which is to pitch it up and push it across. Good game of cat and mouse going on between batsman and bowlers.

  • Ten overs in to this morning's session & it's so far, so good for England. #EngvSL #SkyCricket bit.ly/1hWwdVk http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFb0YFCEAA2H2y.png

  • Over 51 - Sri Lanka 157/2 (Sangakkara 44, Jayawardene 4)
Jayawardene gets off the mark with a boundary - it will be put down as four in the book, but in truth it was a thick outside edge past the very close third slip.
He had nearly played the ball previously back onto his stumps, surprised a little by a short one that ducked back in at him quite late.
    6/14/2014 10:49:10 AM
  • Sangakkara moves on to 50 for Sri Lanka, his 46th half century in test matches. SL 164-2 #SkyCricket #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFdji1CQAAiOKS.png

  • Over 52 - Sri Lanka 164/2 (Sangakkara 51, Jayawardene 4) [50]
Change to the attack - Broad, off Plunkett on.
The new bowler begins around the wicket. His first delivery is full and wide, allowing Sangakkara to drive. A thick outside edge squirts past gully for four in the end. He looks a bit more in control with his second attempt, placing it nicely past extra cover for three runs that take him past his 50. Remember, he hit a century in the one-dayer at the same venue a fortnight ago. His last two Test scores weren't bad either - 319 and 105!
    6/14/2014 10:55:28 AM
  • Over 53 - Sri Lanka 165/2 (Sangakkara 51, Jayawardene 4)
Only run in the Anderson over is an extra, Prior offering a smile to the bowler after he's done by a delivery that swings late after passing the stumps.

  • 6/14/2014 11:01:56 AM
  • Clever boundary from Jayawardene, who moves Sri Lanka on to 170-2. #EngvSL #SkyCricket bit.ly/1hWwdVk http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFfun9CQAA_mKD.png

  • Over 54 - Sri Lanka 170/2 (Sangakkara 52, Jayawardene 8)
Short leg and three slips in place - England looking to keep Jayawardene pegged back in the crease with Plunkett's pace and bounce. Mahela, though, is a wise old fox. You don't score the runs he has without dealing with some short stuff. He uses a bit of width from the seamer, allowing him to uppercut the ball away for his second boundary of the morning session. It also ends the first hour of play on day three - time for some drinks at Lord's.

If you missed Cricket Extra this morning, here's Shane Warne looking forward to his clash with Sachin Tendulkar...

    6/14/2014 11:03:55 AM
  • Over 55 - Sri Lanka 171/2 (Sangakkara 53, Jayawardene 8)
Chris Jordan on for his first bowl of the day.
His first delivery is flicked away by Sangakkara for a single to the man at deep square leg, then Jayawardene sees out the rest of the over comfortably enough.

    6/14/2014 11:15:09 AM
  • Over 56 - Sri Lanka 173/2 (Sangakkara 54, Jayawardene 9)
Inside edge beats short leg Robson, who seems to have been put under the helmet now.
Always the rookie that has to do the job, bet Ian Bell's relieved someone else now has to be crouched there. Singles to both batsmen in the over, the run for Jayawardene taking him past Shivnarine Chanderpual on the all-time scoring list in Test cricket. Sangakkara actually went past Allan Border yesterday.
    6/14/2014 11:15:58 AM
  • During this session Jayawardene has become the sixth all-time run scorer in test match history. #SkyCricket #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFjA8RCIAANuFM.png

  • Over 57 - Sri Lanka 174/2 (Sangakkara 54, Jayawardene 10)
Jayawardene is beaten by a beauty from Jordan, one that is pitched up and swings slightly away at the last fraction of a second.
He makes better contact to the next delivery, though barely times the pants off it as the ball beats Jordan and rolls away for a single. Sangakkara misses a freebie down leg to finish an over that has again seen the heavens opened. Umpires are going to carry on, though.

  • Lunch bench reservations were mostly gone by 0845 but might be a touch damp by now...

    6/14/2014 11:22:54 AM
  • Over 58 - Sri Lanka 180/2 (Sangakkara 55, Jayawardene 15)
Such is the slow pace of this pitch, Jayawardene considered leaving alone a short delivery from Plunkett before having enough time to change his mind, instead steering it down towards wide third man.
The fielder down there can't get around to cut it off, despite a desperate dive. Sri Lanka's deficit now stands at 395 as the rain seems to have eased off, though some nasty-looking clouds are perched over the famous old pavilion.
    6/14/2014 11:24:38 AM
  • Just shows how dark & gloomy it is at Lords! Moeen Ali on to bowl for England. Sri Lanka moved on to 183-2. #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFlLX-CcAALAt-.png

  • Over 59 - Sri Lanka 187/2 (Sangakkara 58, Jayawardene 19)
Cook turns to spin for the first time today in the shape of Ali. He is a fraction too full in his fourth over in Test cricket and, after nudging for ones and twos, Jayawardene then clears mid-on to find the boundary. That might get Mahela going. Seven off the over

  • Over 60 - Sri Lanka 190/2 (Sangakkara 61, Jayawardene 19)
Sangakkara strolls to 60 by punching Plunkett through the covers for a couple before pinching strike with a single off the Yorkshire quick

  • Mixed success so far for England's bowlers. Chris Jordan to return from the Nursery End. #EngvSL #SkyCricket http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqFnUuzCUAA6cNc.png

  • Over 61 - Sri Lanka 191/2 (Sangakkara 62, Jayawardene 19)
Sangakkara looks to charge Ali at every opportunity but the England debutant sticks to a probing length and concedes just a single. You get the impression Sri Lanka are looking to attack Ali at every opportunity with little spin on offer
    6/14/2014 11:39:55 AM
  • Over 62 - Sri Lanka 195/2 (Sangakkara 66, Jayawardene 19)
Sangakkara is farming the strike at the moment and even a change in bowling can't unsettle him. Jordan comes on for Plunkett and Sangakkara wastes no time dispatching him to the rope with a classy pull shot - his seventh boundary of the innings
