England v Sri Lanka, First Test

  • Over 63 - Sri Lanka 202/2 (Sangakkara 67, Jayawardene 25)
Jayawardene continues to tuck into Ali, sweeping with the slope over midwicket for another boundary. It's all too easy for these Sri Lankan maestros at the moment and England will be happy to reach lunch and regroup
    6/14/2014 11:45:50 AM
  • Over 64 - Sri Lanka 206/2 (Sangakkara 68, Jayawardene 28)
Mahela is in the mood now and eases a front foot push down the ground to take Jordan for three more. Sangakkara adds a single to take this ominous-looking partnership on to 55
    6/14/2014 11:50:37 AM
  • Over 65 - Sri Lanka 207/2 (Sangakkara 69, Jayawardene 28)
Moeen appears much happier bowling at the left-handed Sangakkara with a hint of rough to work with outside his off stump. Still nothing extraordinary happening off the pitch, though, and Kumar collects another single to inch closer to his maiden Test century at Lord's
    6/14/2014 11:54:10 AM
  • Over 66 - Sri Lanka 211/2 (Sangakkara 73, Jayawardene 28)
Jordan adopts a much more defensive line to Sangakkara, hoping to force an error well outside his off stump. Kumar leaves well alone before defending with soft hands and seeing an outside edge beat second slip and trickle for four more. One more over before lunch
    6/14/2014 11:58:36 AM
  • Plunkett rejoins the attack looking for an England wicket before lunch. Sri Lanka 211-2. #SkyCricket #EngvSL

  • We've reached lunch at Lord's with Sri Lanka 212-2. Who impressed you during the morning session? #SkyCricket #EngvSL

  • [lunch] LUNCH
So, just the one wicket for England in the morning session on day three as the runs continue to flow. The pitch is looking flatter than ever and Sangakkara and Jayawardene will be confident of batting big and reducing this first-innings deficit significantly. It currently stands at 363 and the second new ball is due in 13 overs.
    6/14/2014 12:04:49 PM
  • [andrewstrauss] With overhead conditions England would have been hopeful of putting Sri Lanka under pressure this morning but the old-timers Sangakkara and Jayawardene have weathered the assault extremely well.”

    6/14/2014 12:44:01 PM
  • Over 68 - Sri Lanka 216/2 (Sangakkara 74, Jayawardene 31)
Moeen starts the afternoon session with a loopy full toss which Jayawardene will be annoyed to have missed out on. Although he picked out midwicket, he still scampered a quick single - the benefit of having a light lunch. That was the start of four singles as Sri Lanka ease back into their work
    6/14/2014 12:46:29 PM
  • Jayawardene just returns to his crease in time to avoid a Prior stumping. Sri Lanka now 221-2 #SkyCricket #EngvSL

  • Over 69 - Sri Lanka 220/2 (Sangakkara 77, Jayawardene 31)
Despite Anderson not bowling since midday, England are persisting with Plunkett and his short-pitched attack with a couple of close-in catchers. No drama to report from his latest over as Mahela ducks and weaves well
    6/14/2014 12:53:09 PM
  • Over 70 - Sri Lanka 226/2 (Sangakkara 80, Jayawardene 34)
Close! Prior whips off the bails but Jayawardene just stretches back to get his toe behind the line after Moeen had beaten his outside edge. Mahela then drives powerfully through extra cover and only a driving stop from Plunkett saves a boundary. Three gathered. Sangakkara then skips down the pitch and lofts over mid-off for three more. Not a convincing shot and Cook, lingering halfway, almost thought he was in business there
    6/14/2014 12:57:53 PM
  • Over 71 - Sri Lanka 232/2 (Sangakkara 83, Jayawardene 35)
Six more runs added off Plunkett but for the first time today Jayawardene appears to be struggling against some pace. Plunkett is getting the ball up at his throat and almost finds Mahela's glove through to Prior when on the hook. He flaps at another hook shot later in the over and the ball lobs safe to square-leg. Encouragement for England
    6/14/2014 1:03:26 PM
  • Over 72 - Sri Lanka 240/2 (Sangakkara 83, Jayawardene 43)
No sweat for Mahela this over, though, and he is toying with Moeen here. He reverse-sweeps his first ball for four through gully and then ends the over by rocking back and cutting to the rope. Classy batting
    6/14/2014 1:04:58 PM
  • Over 73 - Sri Lanka 245/2 (Sangakkara 87, Jayawardene 44)
The sun is out at Lord's and Sri Lanka continue to make inroads into their first-innings deficit. Sangakkara takes the bulk of the strike against Plunkett and drives beautifully through extra cover where a half stop from Broad saves one run but allows Sangakkara to collect three more. England will be counting down the balls into the new nut is due
    6/14/2014 1:09:52 PM
  • Sri Lanka move past 250 as Sangakkara & Jayawardene reach their hundred partnership. #SkyCricket #EngvSL

  • Over 74 - Sri Lanka 253/2 (Sangakkara 92, Jayawardene 46)
Sangakkara moves into the 90s after lofting Moeen back down the ground and just shot of clearing the rope on the fill. That boundary also brings up the 17th century partnership between these two in Test cricket. Eight off the over in total with both batsmen nearing personal milestones
    6/14/2014 1:13:25 PM
  • Over 75 - Sri Lanka 254/2 (Sangakkara 92, Jayawardene 46)
Plunkett gets a full over at Jayawardene and almost has his man on two occasions when Mahela bottom edges just wide of his stumps and then almost plays on via his elbow next ball. Only a no-ball off the over with five more overs left before the second new ball
    6/14/2014 1:17:03 PM
  • [andrewstrauss] Jayawardene has  been troubled by this short line of attack from Plunkett from around the wicket – he’s never really looked comfortable. This is genuinely uncomfortable for Jayawardene. Plunkett is bowling in at the rib cage and with good gas as well.

    6/14/2014 1:17:25 PM
  • Sangakkara and Jayawardene push on...

    6/14/2014 1:19:58 PM
  • Over 76 - Sri Lanka 256/2 (Sangakkara 93, Jayawardene 47)

  • Over 77 - Sri Lanka 263/2 (Sangakkara 99, Jayawardene 48)
Sangakkara, in what will probably be is his last Test match at Lord's appears to have saved his best until last. He drives Plunkett on the up for four and then clips two through midwicket to move to 99...

    6/14/2014 1:32:28 PM
  • Over 79 - Sri Lanka 271/2 (Sangakkara 104, Jayawardene 51) [50]
After watching his great mate reach 100, Jayawardene eases to 50 the following over - his 47th in Test cricket. These two love scoring runs. Decent comeback over from Jordan, though, who almost nips one back into Mahela's pads but his bat comes to the rescue
    6/14/2014 1:34:32 PM
  • Over 80 - Sri Lanka 271/2 (Sangakkara 104, Jayawardene 51)
A maiden from Root and the second new ball is now available!
    6/14/2014 1:35:24 PM
  • Over 81 - Sri Lanka 276/2 (Sangakkara 105, Jayawardene 55)
England take the new ball and Anderson almost claims the breakthrough with it when he squares up Jayawardene, but the ball whistles past his outside edge through to Prior. Mahela continues to play with soft hands and guides two twos through the gully region to collect four more runs. Double tea pots from Cook and Anderson and frustration mounting in the field
    6/14/2014 1:43:23 PM
  • They're having a few power problems at Lord's, so it's back to the 'old school' scoreboard. #SkyCricket #EngvSL
