England v Sri Lanka, First Test

Lord's

  • Jayawardene's wagon wheel... Sri Lanka now less than 100 from avoiding the follow on. 276-2 #SkyCricket #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqGE_D1CYAA13Qm.png

  • Jayawardene lbw Broad 55 [wicket]

Broad strikes! Huge wicket for England. A nip-backer pins Jayawardene on the crease and Billy Bowden raises the finger. Mahela reviews in vain and the 126-run partnership comes to an end
    6/14/2014 1:51:48 PM
  • [ianbotham] One thing’s for sure it’s not going over the top on this pitch – the bat was about three inches away from the ball. It was hitting middle stump. England have got the breakthrough in the second over with the new ball.”

    6/14/2014 1:52:29 PM
  • I think that's what they call plumb. Strange review. Jayawardene goes for 55. Broad in full flow now. #SkyCricket http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqGGl8NCQAIIsID.png

  • Over 82 - Sri Lanka 281/3 (Sangakkara 109, Thirimanne 1)
Thirimanne is the new batsman and he gets off the mark first ball with a single on the leg-side. Tough time for the new batsman to come in with the new ball just taken. Sangakkara is still there, though, and he ends the over with a classy drive for three more after Broad over-pitches
    6/14/2014 1:56:02 PM
  • Over 83 - Sri Lanka 281/3 (Sangakkara 111, Thirimanne 2)
England are happy to give Sangakkara a single in order to have a crack at new man Thirimanne. Anderson thinks he has the Sri Lanka No 5 with a full in-swinger but somehow the left-hander gets his bat down in time. Things starting to happen again for England...
    6/14/2014 2:00:37 PM
  • Over 84 - Sri Lanka 288/3 (Sangakkara 115, Thirimanne 2)
Loud shout from Broad, not quite what for.
Ball far too high for lbw and hit only pad on the way through to Prior. Think the bowler just got a bit excited at the quality of the delivery! Still, another sign that things are happening with this second new cherry. Sangakkara definitely gets some wood on the last ball, driving it gloriously through the covers for four. Minimum of fuss, maximum amount of success. Sri Lanka now trail by 287 runs.
    6/14/2014 2:04:00 PM
  • Over 85 - Sri Lanka 289/3 (Sangakkara 115, Thirimanne 2)
Anderson gets one all wrong - it starts wide, swings further away and ends up needing Prior to dive in front of Cook to deal with it.
Wide, even in a Test match. That was so wide it would be called in a charity match. The radar is back working soon enough, but Thirimanne is nicely in behind anything he feels is remotely threatening his furniture. Just the one extra from the over.
    6/14/2014 2:07:51 PM
  • Over 86 - Sri Lanka 289/3 (Sangakkara 115, Thirimanne 2)
Excellent judgement from Sangakkara to finish a Broad maiden - he leaves one alone from around the wicket that come back in prodigiously in the air, forcing Prior to dive to his right to catch up with it.
Such a leave with so little margin for error suggests Kumar is just the type of man you can get to park your car into a tight space, should you not quite have the confidence to do so.
    6/14/2014 2:13:16 PM
  • Emergency scoreboard is nestling just behind the sightscreen in case another power cut takes out its electronic counterparts. Lovely wood-primed finish.

    6/14/2014 2:14:38 PM
  • WICKET! Thirimanne c Robson b Anderson 2 [wicket]
You got the feeling Anderson might get Thirimanne - just didn't think it would be caught at mid-wicket.
Left-hander falls across trying to flick one off his toes, resulting in a simple catch for Sam Robson.
    6/14/2014 2:16:52 PM
  • Over 87 - Sri Lanka 289/4 (Sangakkara 115, Mathews 0)
So skipper Angelo Mathews comes in at six with a bit of work for his side to do to avoid having to bat again immediately. He'll have to wait for his chance to face - Anderson took a wicket with the last delivery of his 21st over
    6/14/2014 2:19:43 PM
  • There's the fourth wicket! Thirimanne plays a lazy shot, resulting in a simple catch for Sam Robson. #SkyCricket http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqGMtPiCIAADKd1.png

  • Over 88 - Sri Lanka 290/4 (Sangakkara 116, Mathews 0)
Sangakkara gets a single off the first ball of the over - it's almost like Broad wanted him off strike.
Mathews is the man in his sights and the Sri Lanka captain is beaten outside his off stump to finish another good 'un from Broad. Sri Lanka going nowhere slowly right now, having managed just 13 runs in the last 6.2 overs since Jayawardene's departure. Change for England - Jordan coming on.
    6/14/2014 2:23:18 PM
  • Jimmy's celebrations - as seen on the big screen on the Nursery Ground.

  • A gentle reminder for you all to tune into tonight at 9pm for #TheVerdict . Bob Willis will be waiting! http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqGOoqLCMAAcLyv.png

  • Over 89 - Sri Lanka 290/4 (Sangakkara 115, Mathews 0)
Maiden from Jordan - however, it seemed to trouble Prior more than Sangakkara, the wicketkeeper being flummoxed by a delivery that ducked late after passing the bat.
No byes given away, England slowly, carefully turning the screw on Sri Lanka.
    6/14/2014 2:29:25 PM
  • Over 90 - Sri Lanka 291/4 (Sangakkara 116, Mathews 1)
Mathews off the mark from the eighth delivery he's faced, defending Broad on the back foot into the covers and then quickly calling the former Sri Lanka skipper through for one, meaning the current leader has avoided a duck at Lord's.
Tourists now trail by 284 runs.
    6/14/2014 2:31:51 PM
  • Over 91 - Sri Lanka 300/4 (Sangakkara 117, Mathews 9)
Mathews hovering back in his crease, though that doesn't stop him from leaning on a full delivery from Jordan and driving impressively through mid-on for a boundary.
He also hits straight on the other side of the wicket, Jordan doing himself an injury after trying to stop a back-foot drive. Mathews picks up three, Jordan picks up his jumper from the umpire and heads off the field for some treatment. Sri Lanka now reach 300 in their first innings.
    6/14/2014 2:37:20 PM
  • Over 92 - Sri Lanka 309/4 (Sangakkara 121, Mathews 14)
Plunkett back into the attack - don't have to be a mind reader to see what is coming, with England placing a short leg, a leg gully and two men out in the deep.
Mathews duly has a hook at the first short one that comes his way, connecting nicely to send it away for four runs. When Sangakkara gets on strike the hosts don't even have a slip. He times a pull shot nicely to square leg to finish, netting him four. That looks like that for the afternoon.
    6/14/2014 2:42:08 PM
  • Another good session for Sri Lanka, who move on to 309-4 at tea. Sangakkara still there on 121. #SkyCricket #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BqGSHPLCMAAO_TQ.png

  • TEA [tea]
So that's session two done on day three - Sri Lanka managed 97 runs in the 25 overs since lunch, losing a pair of wickets in the process.
Jayawardene was lbw to Broad for 55, while Thirimanne clipped Anderson to mid-wicket having made just two. Sangakkara, though, remains rock-solid in the middle - he has finally got his name on the Lord's honours board in Test cricket and looks full of plenty more runs yet.

  • Over 93 - Sri Lanka 318/4 (Sangakkara 121, Mathews 23)
Mathews enjoyed his tea! He drills the first ball of the evening session, bowled by Jordan, straight through mid-off to the boundary. Loose start from Jordan and Mathews was waiting. He then pulls a short ball for two and drives off the back foot for three more. An expensive start to the session from Jordan

  • Evening session line-up, as it stands...

    6/14/2014 3:11:42 PM
  • Over 94 - Sri Lanka 318/4 (Sangakkara 121, Mathews 23)
Anderson puts the skids on Mathews with a probing maiden, beating the outside edge in the process
    6/14/2014 3:13:02 PM
  • Over 95 - Sri Lanka 322/4 (Sangakkara 125, Mathews 23)
Shot! Sangakkara drives Jordan on the up through point for another graceful boundary to end the 95th over. Kumar is having a lovely net out there at the moment
    6/14/2014 3:17:55 PM
  • Over 96 - Sri Lanka 329/4 (Sangakkara 125, Mathews 30)
The second new ball is not so new now and Mathews is looking comfortable alongside Sangakkara. He swivels on a pull shot to send Anderson to the boundary and then clips three more through midwicket. Anderson is looking a little frustrated. Curiously Broad only bowled five overs in his last spell. Injured?
    6/14/2014 3:24:02 PM
  • Over 97 - Sri Lanka 334/4 (Sangakkara 125, Mathews 35)
It's been all about Mathews since tea. Jordan looks to have lost his rhythm and sends down a short, wide delivery which Mathews dismisses to the cover boundary. England looked ragged now

  • Over 98 - Sri Lanka 336/4 (Sangakkara 126, Mathews 36)
Whoosh! An expansive play and a miss from Sangakkara comes completely out of nowhere and nearly brings Anderson a third wicket of the day. Jimmy can't have many overs left in this spell but has once again tried everything to help the England cause. Two singles added
    6/14/2014 3:34:02 PM
  • Over 99 - Sri Lanka 340/4 (Sangakkara 129, Mathews 37)
Jordan is also steaming in but this surface is a batsman's dream and a fast bowler's worst nightmare. Sanga and Mathews continue to work the singles and four more runs are added. The deficit is now 235

  • Floodlights at the Pavilion End are slowly cranking into gear...

    6/14/2014 3:39:49 PM
  • Over 100 - Sri Lanka 345/4 (Sangakkara 133, Mathews 38)
Plunkett is back as Cook continues to deploy him in short, sharp bursts. Mathews milks him for a single and Sangakkara then pounces on some width and sends a thunderous square drive to the fence. England's lack of a quality spin option being exposed here
    6/14/2014 3:46:30 PM
  • [mikeatherton] That was a dreamy shot – Sangakkara just leaned into it beautifully. It’s an easy game when you can play shots like that.

    6/14/2014 3:46:49 PM
  • Over 101 - Sri Lanka 348/4 (Sangakkara 133, Mathews 41)
Mathews pulls Jordan for two more and then adds a single to move into the 40s
    6/14/2014 3:48:48 PM
  • 6/14/2014 3:54:02 PM
  • Over 102 - Sri Lanka 351/4 (Sangakkara 133, Mathews 44)
This is turning into a long day in the field for England. Sangakkara has added just 12 runs since tea while Mathews has motored on from 14 to 44
    6/14/2014 3:54:09 PM
  • Over 103 - Sri Lanka 354/4 (Sangakkara 134, Mathews 46)
Jordan gives Sangakkara the hurry-up with a bang-in ball which Kumar fends off.It would have been a simple catch for short-leg but one problem... yep, there is no short-leg! Jordan still trying everything...
    6/14/2014 3:59:28 PM
  • Over 104 - Sri Lanka 356/4 (Sangakkara 135, Mathews 47)
Moeen is back on and just a couple of singles added. A little bit more spin on offer, though, and Mathews almost gets in a muddle attempting to cut a ball which spins back and cramps him for room
