England v Sri Lanka, First Test

Lord's

  • Over 50 - England 187-4 (Ali 37, Root 41)
Nice footwork from Root, getting down the pitch to work Herath away through midwicket for a hard-run three. Moeen nudges the last ball of the over wide of short-leg for a single.

  • Over 51 - England 188-4 (Ali 38, Root 41)
This has been a good, probing spell from Eranga before tea. Just a single from it, Ali called through for a quick single by Root after a thick inside edge into the pad.
    6/12/2014 2:40:26 PM
  • Over 52 - England 188-4 (Ali 38, Root 41)
Herath settling in to his work now after a difficult start. Maiden over. Time for one more before tea.
    6/12/2014 2:41:28 PM
  • Over 53 - England 195-4 (Ali 43, Root 43)
Lahiru Thirimanne to bowl the final over of the session. It's the gentlest of medium pace, and Moeen helps himself to four from the final ball of the session, slapped through cover-point with something approaching disdain.

  • Tea
[tea]Much better session for England despite the loss of key man Ian Bell. Root and Ali have rebuilt steadily and sensibly, with the debutant looking particularly good. Plenty more work to do, though. The pitch is getting better and better to bat on, and England must be looking north of 400 here. They've not got there for a long time.

  • [betting]SKY BET ODDS
So how have the odds changed after two sessions of cricket? Well, England's haven't at all actually, going back to their starting price of 11/10, having drifted to 5/4 after losing their openers, while Sri Lanka are 11/4 with the draw 2/1.

  • Over 54 – Eng 196-4 (Ali 43 Root 44)
Kulasekara gets us going after tea, with a tight over yielding just a single to Root as he nudges ahead of his batting partner to 44 not out.

    6/12/2014 3:07:27 PM
  • Over 55 – Eng 199-4 (Ali 43 Root 47)
Herath comes in for some spin, and Root gets three with a flick off the pads through midwicket – that takes Root over the 1,000-run mark in Test match cricket. He’s the 96th England batsman to make 1,000 Test runs.

  • Over 56 – Eng 204-4 (Ali 47 Root 48)[4]
Root now brings up the 200 for England with a single off Kulasekara. Ali goes for the pull shot off a short ball – more than a hint of top edge about it but it went fine enough to reach the fence for four.

  • Over 57 – Eng 207-4 (Ali 47 Root 51)[50]
Joe Root beats Ali to his half-century, and he’s played very nicely for that, digging in early and now looking to score a bit quicker. A fine knock from the youngster given the circumstances, showed nice temperament and now some shot making as well. That 50 came off 106 balls.

    6/12/2014 3:19:23 PM
  • Over 58 – Eng 209-4 (Ali 48 Root 52)
Quiet over with just a couple of runs in it.

    6/12/2014 3:22:43 PM
  • [wicket] Ali c Jayawardene b Herath 48

Ali goes! He probably deserved a 50 but Ali falls just short and it’s a loose shot as he heaves a big swing at a tossed up delivery but just edges it to second slip, maybe thinking about his 50 too much.

    6/12/2014 3:25:57 PM
  • Jeez... How unlucky is that for Herath... !!!
  • Over 59 – Eng 210-5 (Prior 1 Root 52)
Big over for Sri Lanka, getting rid of Ali when he looked set to at least get his 50, it was a loose shot, maybe his eyes lit up at the ball tossed up from Herath, but the wild swing only found an edge. Matt Prior was then lucky not to go first ball when given not out on a huge lbw shout. Sri Lanka reviewed and the impact was just umpire’s call, so he was handed a reprieve – so tight though!
    6/12/2014 3:29:00 PM
  • Ali departs for 48, and Prior is now the man in for England. 210 - 5: bit.ly/1oWJNGB #EngvSL http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bp8JUIVCcAAiLF1.png

  • Moeen Ali will be one of the main talking points on the Verdict tonight. Our first show of the test series starts at 9pm on Sky Sports 3!
  • Over 60 – Eng 213-5 (Prior 4 Root 52)
Prior gets three runs after a clip away off his toes and the fielder hits the stumps for overthrows. England just need to settle down a bit now after a hectic over last time.
    6/12/2014 3:33:27 PM
  • Over 61 – Eng 217-5 (Prior 8 Root 52)[4]
Prior’s eyes light up now with Herath trying to loft them up there again, and he just skips down and lifts it back down the ground for four. He’s obviously keen to push on and prove himself today is Prior.

    6/12/2014 3:35:42 PM
  • Over 62 – Eng 223-5 (Prior 9 Root 57)[4]
Nice shot from Root as he cuts the ball away for another boundary, England just have to be careful here as they need to keep scoring but with five down can’t really afford to be losing too many more wickets.

    6/12/2014 3:40:58 PM
  • Over 63 – Eng 227-5 (Prior 13 Root 57)[4]
Prior again looked to be aggressive to the spinner, smacking Herath for four off the first ball of the over – then Herath tightens it up so just four runs off it.

    6/12/2014 3:43:15 PM
  • [stats] This stat has tickled Athers...
Chanaka Welegedara (not playing) is the only Test cricketer with six initials. The England Test record is four (VPFA Royle and JWHT Douglas). The most initials to play first-class cricket in England is seven: John Elicius Benedict Bernard Placid Quirk Carrington (JEBBPWC) Dwyer who played for Sussex from 1904 to 1909.
    6/12/2014 3:44:14 PM
  • Over 64 – Eng 229-5 (Prior 14 Root 57)
Pradeep comes in with a good, tight over, just two runs from it, a single each to Root and Prior, who must now be aiming to see it through to the close without losing a wicket.

    6/12/2014 3:47:52 PM
  • Over 65 – Eng 230-5 (Prior 15 Root 58)
Herath is still floating these left armers up at both batsmen, who are content in this over to step back and and just prod away on the back foot for now.

  • Over 66 – Eng 232-5 (Prior 16 Root 59)
Prior pulls but only gets half of it at the most and runs a single. Root also pushes a ball for one as it looks comfortable if a little slow at the moment.

  • Over 67 – Eng 234-5 (Prior 16 Root 61)
Root flicks Eranga away for two, it’s quite a tight two and it could have been close had the throw in been closer but they’re safe enough.

    6/12/2014 3:59:44 PM
  • Over 68 – Eng 239-5 (Prior 21 Root 61)[4]
Prior again going after Herath, he rocks back and plays the latest of late cuts which simply races away for four, no chasing that one.

    6/12/2014 4:04:37 PM
  • Over 69 – Eng 244-5 (Prior 23 Root 64)
Root trying to keep up with Prior, who’s looking in a very positive frame of mind, again it’s a flick away off the pads and it takes a diving stop to prevent the boundary – Root has to settle for three.

    6/12/2014 4:08:21 PM
  • Over 70 – Eng 247-5 (Prior 25 Root 65)
A single for Prior against Herath, before Root goes for an almighty heave and is lucky his massive bottom edge bounces just wide of the stumps. A strange and unorthodox shot from Root given how he’s played so far.

    6/12/2014 4:11:34 PM
  • Over 71 - England 261-5 (Prior 26, Root 73)
Four leg-byes off Prior's thigh take England past 250. A big no ball from Eranga makes it five runs from the over without Prior and Root having to do anything. Prior gets involved in the runscoring by pushing an easy single into one of the big gaps Mathews has left on the offside. Four more for Root from a rank long-hop, cracked away between point and cover. Poor ball but a good shot. And then an even better one as Eranga over-corrects and offers a half-volley that is pinged through point.
    6/12/2014 4:18:22 PM
  • [shanewarne] That’s another beautiful shot – have a bit of that! That’s back-to-back boundaries for Root.”

    6/12/2014 4:19:44 PM
  • Over 72 - England 268-5 (Prior 31, Root 75)
Mathews getting his line wrong here, allowing Prior to clip him away through the legside for a couple of twos. Prior picks up a single before Mathews continues to drift into the pads and is picked off for two by Root.
