  • A selection of this morning's Root reviews...

    6/13/2014 9:02:19 AM
  • The plaudits have rightly come thick and fast since Root closed the day unbeaten on 102, making a tough winter in Australia seem a world away... Here's Nasser's take in The Mail on that hundred and Root's captaincy prospects...

[nasserhussain] I maintain this guy has the potential to captain England one day, and it’s right that he should have been given the chance to prove his worth – especially now that he’s at No 5, where he deserves a long run.”

    6/13/2014 9:07:25 AM
But let's hear from the man himself. Ian Ward caught up with Root at stumps yesterday...

We'll be taking a closer look at the Unity Team from Sri Lanka a little later in today's coverage. For now let's catch up with the Sri Lanka camp and find out what they made of yesterday's effort. Ian Ward caught up with bowling coach Chaminda Vaas...

  • And we're on air! Tune in to SS2 now & keep up to date with all the action with our live blog:

  • In amongst all of the Root fanfare, we mustn't forget about Matt Prior, who will resume on 76no. Here's how Athers rated yesterday's knock, in the Times...
[michaelatherton] The Lord’s crowd know character when they see it and it was in double supply in the stocky figure of Prior, since he came to the crease with his game under enormous scrutiny and England faltering… There are voluble voices in opposition to him… but you write off a champion cricketer… at your peril.”

  • Coming up... Shane and Nasser assess the batting strengths (and weaknesses) of Jayawardene and Sangakkara...

  • Kumar and Mahela
Here’s a taste of what England could face (later) today…
    6/13/2014 9:55:58 AM
  • 6/13/2014 10:01:44 AM
A grand total of 42 per cent of you think England will score between 400 and 499 in their first innings with 14 per cent going for 500-549, 13 per cent for 550-599 and 12 per cent opting for 600 or over.
    6/13/2014 10:03:38 AM
  • [injury]Over 90 - England 344-5 (Root 102, Prior 76)
Sri Lanka have suffered a blow even before play starts on day two. Wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene has gone to hospital for an X-ray after hurting his hand during the warm-up. Kaushal Silva has got the gloves on, Kumar Sangakkara is only number three on the wicktekeeping depth chart in this particular XI! Shaminda Eranga, who was expensive on day one, takes the first over of the morning and Matt Prior - who needs another four runs for 4,000 in Test cricket - is correct in defence throughout a maiden.

  • DAY ONE PODCAST - just in case you're in need of a quick refresher, here are Nass and Straussy...
    6/13/2014 10:10:32 AM
  • Over 91 - England 347-5 (Root 103, Prior 78)
Root drops a single into the leg-side for the first run of the day from Nuwan Pradeep's opening delivery. Prior also collects his first runs of the day, turning one into two with some aggressive running after turning the ball out to square-leg.
    6/13/2014 10:11:17 AM
  • Confirmation that this partnership between Root and Prior is the highest 6th wicket partnership for #EngvSL in Tests

  • [4]Over 92 - England 356-5 (Root 112, Prior 78)
Root pushes the first delivery of Eranga's over towards mid-on and Herath dives over the top of it to allow the day's first boundary. Eranga gets a short ball to rear up more than Root expected and the resulting gloved pull only just evades keeper Silva on its way to the boundary. Prasanna Jayawardene is back from hospital and looks to have been given the all-clear; he's coming straight back on to take over wicketkeeping duties.
    6/13/2014 10:16:22 AM
  • Good news... Prasanna Jayawardene is back on the pitch and has the gloves back on. #engvsl
[andrewstrauss] The pitch will flatten out today and will probably be the best day for batting.”

    6/13/2014 10:20:25 AM
  • Over 93 - England 358-5 (Root 113, Prior 79)
Pradeep decides to come round-the-wicket and aim at Root's ribs. No worries for the Yorkshireman, who ducks under a couple of short ones without alarm.
    6/13/2014 10:21:39 AM
  • [stats] Matt Prior becomes the eighth keeper to reach 4000 Test runs – and England’s third, after Alec Stewart (4,540) & Alan Knott (4,389).
    6/13/2014 10:24:29 AM
  • Over 94 - England 360-5 (Root 114, Prior 80)
Prior gloves a single into the leg-side off Eranga to go to 4,000 Test runs. This is his 117th Test innings (he's averaging above 41) and he's the 32nd England batsman to reach the milestone.
    6/13/2014 10:28:21 AM
  • .@BeefyBotham & @KumarSangakkara earlier with the Unity Team, an U19 squad formed of the best Murali Cup players.

  • These chaps in their... erm... summary blazers have caught Bumble's eye:

  • [4]Over 95 - England 365-5 (Root 119, Prior 80)
Root has rode his luck so far this morning; an inside edge falls just out of the reach of leg-slip and runs away for four. He outside edges the next one from Pradeep just short of first slip. Decent over from Pradeep ends with him passing Prior's edge with a short ball as the batsman looked to run it down to third-man. Sri Lanka have bowled noticeably shorter than they did yesterday during the first half-hour.
    6/13/2014 10:32:48 AM
  • Over 96 - England 370-5 (Root 122, Prior 82)
Eranga continues to pull back his length but there are no problems for Root and Prior, both look very comfortable playing on the back foot.
    6/13/2014 10:39:24 AM
  • Add four to Prior's run tally...

    6/13/2014 10:40:59 AM
  • [4]Over 97 - England 375-5 (Root 123, Prior 86)
Sri Lanka turn to spin in the eighth over of the morning. Left-armer Herath doesn't get much purchase with his first six balls of the day, the last of which is too short allowing Prior to cut away for his 10th four.
    6/13/2014 10:42:14 AM
  • [wicket]Prior c Silva b Eranga 86

Prior fends a short ball to short-leg to miss out on a century. Eranga gets his reward for a sustained spell of short-pitched bowling from round-the-wicket.
    6/13/2014 10:46:44 AM
  • WICKET! Matt Prior goes for 86 after being caught by Eranga. England 380-6

  • [andrewstrauss] Matt Prior will be bitterly disappointed with himself. It was the around the wicket angle that really confused him; he couldn’t get his body out of the way of it. He’s gone for a very well-played 86.

    6/13/2014 10:49:41 AM
  • Over 98 - England 380-6 (Root 128, Jordan 0)
Prior kicked the dust up in frustration as he departed, he got in a tangle trying to play that short ball. Should have ducked under it. His exit brings Chris Jordan to the middle for his first bat in Test cricket.
    6/13/2014 10:50:08 AM
  • Over 99 - England 381-6 (Root 129, Jordan 0)
Root takes a drop-and-run single off Herath's first ball and Jordan is then content to have a look at a few, playing defensively throughout the remainder of the over.
    6/13/2014 10:51:33 AM
  • Catch the Ricky Ponting Masterclass filmed here @MCC_Academy @HomeOfCricket today @ lunch on @SkySports . #LoveLords

  • [4]Over 100 - England 386-6 (Root 130, Jordan 4)
Jordan is off the mark in Test cricket with an all-run four! He leaned into an off drive after Eranga over-pitched and easily made it back for the fourth run despite the ball pulling up short of the boundary rope.
    6/13/2014 10:55:41 AM
  • JORDAN COMES OF AGE - here's what England's number eight had to say before the Test...
    6/13/2014 10:57:24 AM
  • [4]Over 101 - England 392-6 (Root 131, Jordan 9)
Jordan has already shown some ability with the bat for England in limited-overs matches (he also has six first-class 50s with a best of 92). He's happy to use his feet to Herath, skipping down to hit his first boundary in Test cricket past mid-on.
