England v Sri Lanka, First Test

  • [mikeatherton] Before the game I would have gone with Cook, Root and Bell at the top of the order but now that the selectors have set their stall out with this batting line-up they are not going to want it to change much. I personally would have liked to have seen Bell go to number three but clearly that is not going to happen now for the forseeable."

  • [mikeatherton] I think clubs that produce the majority of cricketers in this country are often really hard up and more could be done to help them."

  • [mikeatherton] Simple - he should be in England's 50-over side but not the Test side."

    6/13/2014 12:31:48 PM
  • Thanks for all of the questions - time has beaten us, I'm afraid so there's just time for Athers to give us an idea of how he thinks this afternoon's session might go...

[mikeatherton] England are going to have a bit of a fling and then Sri Lanka's batsmen will face a proper test trying to get on par or better in the first innings against what is a decent attack."

  • Another tough choice to make which one for the Sky Boys to enjoy today ??

  • [4]Over 114 - England 484-8 (Root 153, Plunkett 6)
Eranga starts the afternoon with a poor over. A succession of deliveries down the leg-side before Plenkett drives the final ball through mid-off for four

  • [4]Over 115 - England 489-8 (Root 154, Plunkett 10)
Plunkett is not messing about, using his feet to get down the pitch to Herath without success and then heaving the last ball of the over to midwicket for four
    6/13/2014 12:51:49 PM
  • @McCannbespoke : @BeefyBotham no pocket square today?” Don't have one to go with this suit....yet !!
  • Over 116 - England 489-8 (Root 156, Plunkett 10)
Root gets a couple off his pads before Eranga goes back to his short-pitched attack.

  • Extended Friday lunch? Don't mind if we do...

    6/13/2014 12:56:28 PM
  • Over 117 - England 493-8 (Root 157, Plunkett 11)
A single apiece for each batsman off Herath. Plunkett again keen to come down the pitch, he's looking to launch it back over the spinner's head but hasn't managed it yet.
    6/13/2014 12:56:37 PM
  • [shanewarne] I’d much rather see England taking the game by the scruff of the neck and declaring and taking the game to Sri Lanka.”

    6/13/2014 12:57:16 PM
  • [4]Over 118 - England 503-8 (Root 163, Plunkett 15)
Eranga keeps drifting onto the pads and it's easy pickings for the batsmen in an over costing 10 runs. Root eases a boundary behind square as England move beyond 500, the last 100 of which came off 97 balls.
    6/13/2014 1:03:23 PM
  • Over 119 - England 506-8 (Root 164, Plunkett 17)
Plunkett still eyeing up long-on and long-off against Herath but still hasn't managed it...
    6/13/2014 1:07:03 PM
  • [4]Over 120 - England 521-8 (Root 165, Plunkett 30)
Plunkett pulls three fours during an over of short-pitched rubbish from Eranga. The second one bounced just short of the man diving forward after coming in off the midwicket fence but was a big no-ball anyway. He's done that a few times today.
    6/13/2014 1:10:52 PM
  • Over 121 - England 524-8 (Root 168, Plunkett 30)
Root sweeps for a couple and then tries a reverse sweep but fails to make contact. Herath hasn't got anything from this pitch. The Root-Plunkett partnership is now worth 58, a ninth-wicket record for England against Sri Lanka.
    6/13/2014 1:16:46 PM
  • Over 122 - England 524-8 (Root 171, Plunkett 30)
Pradeep is on to replace Eranga. Root collects some runs on the leg-side, three in total and Plunkett rolls his wrists on a pull for a single. All very easy for the batsmen at the moment.

  • [betting]ENGLAND ODDS-ON
England's odds continue to shorten as they maintain their tight grasp on the first Test, with a 1-0 lead now 8/13, the draw 11/8 and a Sri Lanka victory out to 20/1.

  • [4]Over 123 - England 536-8 (Root 177, Plunkett 33)
Root's highest Test score is the 180 he made at this ground against Australia last year. He's now within three of that after a well-placed sweep off Herath runs away for four.
    6/13/2014 1:25:20 PM
  • [4]Over 124 - England 543-8 (Root 178, Plunkett 38)
Plunkett - who has two first-class hundreds - uses his wrists to steer a drive into the leg-side for his sixth four. He's also closing in on his highest Test score, the 44 not out he made against West Indies at Headingley in 2007
    6/13/2014 1:30:02 PM
  • Root - closing in...

    6/13/2014 1:30:20 PM
  • Over 125 - England 547-8 (Root 181, Plunkett 39)
Root's weight of shot into the leg-side allows him to comes back for two off the final ball of Herath's over - meaning this is now his best Test score.
    6/13/2014 1:33:17 PM
  • Plunkett c Silva b Pradeep 39[wicket]

Plunkett's bright innings comes to an end with a miscued pull to Silva at midwicket.

  • Over 126 - England 547-9 (Root 181, Anderson 0)
All of Sri Lanka's wickets today have come via the short ball but it's a tactic that has also cost them plenty of runs. Last man Anderson comes out to join Root. Can he see him through to a double ton?
    6/13/2014 1:38:34 PM
  • [4]Over 127 - England 554-9 (Root 183, Anderson 5)
Anderson gets off the mark by reverse sweeping Herath in front of square for four. Not often you see that from a No 11.Time for drinks.

  • @pravspandey : @BumbleCricket which brand of cricket did you play in your days? 6 runs of 90 balls aye?!?!?”Careful
  • @Touchdown_Store : @BumbleCricket Bumble, ask warney why he always stuck his tongue out when bowling?”You ask him!

  • Over 128 - England 555-9 (Root 184, Anderson 5)
Big lbw shout against Anderson, and Sri Lanka decide to use the review. Given that you could see all three stumps when it hit the pad, you think it must have pitched outside leg. And it has. England bat on, Root 16 short of a double hundred.
    6/13/2014 1:51:42 PM
  • Over 129 - England 564-9 (Root 190, Anderson 8)
Root slog-sweeps Herath over the deep midwicket fielder for four. Had the man been right on the rope, that would've been the end of the innings. Adds a single to move to 189 before Anderson edges low to Jayawardene's left at slip, and the veteran can't get his hand down to it. One of the finest slip fielders around, but can't take that tough chance. Three runs for Anderson there, and Root adds a single to move into the 190s.
    6/13/2014 1:54:07 PM
  • Over 130 - England 571-9 (Root 197, Anderson 8)
Root whips Pradeep through midwicket for two and then gets an absolute down the legside that he flicks away to the fine-leg fence. One hit away now, but he's reluctant to give Anderson any strike as he turns down singles off the next two deliveries. Takes the run off the fifth ball, and Anderson survives the final ball of the over to huge cheers.
    6/13/2014 1:57:57 PM
  • Over 131 - England 575-9dec (Root 200, Anderson 9)
[200]There it is. Singles from the first two balls of the over before Root dabs a sweep to fine-leg to reach a quite brilliant double hundred. England were in bother at 74-3 when he came to the crease. They are not in bother now. Cook has seen enough now, and calls time on the innings at a mammoth 575-9d.
    6/13/2014 2:02:27 PM
  • For all Yorkshiremen with an eye for this sort of thing .. @FredBoycott ... Joe Root ave is now 44.42
  • The crowd at Lord’s are on their feet. Root gets his 200 with tickle down to fine leg. Splendid knock.

  • The moment Joe Root posted his double hundred, as seen from the comms box.
