  • As predicted, Cook declares following Root’s double century. Nice total to defend, albeit on a flat wicket.

  • England 575-9 declared
[end-of-innings]Well that's that 400 hoodoo put to bed in some style. Great recovery from 74-3 as Root, in partnership with Bell, Ali, Prior, Jordan, Broad and Plunkett took the game completely away from an increasingly bedraggled Sri Lanka.

  • [davidlloyd] A great day for Joe Root a wonderful achievement – he’s got his head down and he’s played beautifully. What an innings, 200 with a red ink [not out].

  • Big occasion for the two inexperienced Sri Lanka openers. Anderson roaring in as we tweet.

  • Over 1 - Sri Lanka 6-0 (Karunaratne 5, Silva 1)
Close! Anderson right on the money first ball and finds the edge of left-handed Karunaratne's bat. But the ball falls short of Jordan at second slip and runs away for four. Couple of quick singles - the second of which prompts a slightly over-cautious third-umpire check from the umpire - makes it six from the over. Review! Anderson pins Karunaratne on the knee-roll with the last ball of the over, and the batsman reviews. It's pitched in line and hit pad first, but is just clearing the bails and the batsman survives.
    6/13/2014 2:18:46 PM
  • Drama of DRS! Anderson's LBW appeal overturned...millimeters in that.

  • Prior and England's slip cordon, as seen from the reverse angle stump cam. #EngvSL

  • Over 2 - Sri Lanka 10-0 (Karunaratne 5, Silva 5)
Nice shot from Silva, leaning on a full delivery from Broad and using the lovely hardness of the new ball to ping it away past cover for four.
    6/13/2014 2:23:58 PM
  • Over 3 - Sri Lanka 15-0 (Karunaratne 6, Silva 9)
Another four to third-man, for Silva this time off a controlled outside edge as Anderson swings one away from the right-hander.
    6/13/2014 2:27:00 PM
Fancy England to go on and beat Sri Lanka at Lord’s? Sky Bet’s Tim Clement does.
    6/13/2014 2:28:12 PM
  • The wavelength at slip between Ballance & Jordan not quite there yet. Straight down the middle.

  • Over 4 - Sri Lanka 23-0 (Karunaratne 14, Silva 9)
[missed-chance]Chance! This Karunaratne innings currently one to file under "charmed". Genuine outside edge at catchable height but right in the gap between Jordan at second slip and Ballance at third slip. Both go for it, neither gets a hand on it. The ball runs away for four, and Karunaratne adds four more in more convincing style with a clip off his toes through midwicket. It's not been dull today.
    6/13/2014 2:30:53 PM
  • Over 5 - Sri Lanka 29-0 (Karunaratne 17, Silva 12)
Good batting from this pair against Anderson, who is hooping the ball both ways in the air. Not just surviving, but looking to get the ball into gaps for ones and twos.
    6/13/2014 2:37:24 PM
  • Over 6 - Sri Lanka 31-0 (Karunaratne 19, Silva 12)
Good, probing over from Broad. Just two runs off it, worked behind square-leg by Karunaratne.
    6/13/2014 2:40:26 PM
  • Over 7 - Sri Lanka 35-0 (Karunaratne 19, Silva 16)
Big hooping inswinger from Anderson to Silva, but the Sri Lanka opener gets his bat on it and, as a bonus, gets it down to the fine-leg fence for four. That will be tea and part one of the job done for Sri Lanka's batsmen.
    6/13/2014 2:44:25 PM
  • Few hairy moments but Sri Lanka get to tea with all their wickets in tact. England bowled nicely, mind.

  • Tea
[tea]Outstanding innings from Root to propel England to 575-9, but the bowlers weren't able to make any inroads in the half-hour before tea. Came about as close as it's possible to come, though.

  • A lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of a sheep.
  • This is shaping up to be a crucial session for both England & Sri Lanka. Stuart Broad leading the #Eng attack.

  • Over 8 - Sri Lanka 36-0 (Karunaratne 20, Silva 16)
Broad continues after tea. He's concentrating on hitting the pitch hard, back of a length. Karunaratne collects a single off his hip before Silva plays and misses outside off-stump.
    6/13/2014 3:08:02 PM
  • [4]Over 9 - Sri Lanka 40-0 (Karunaratne 24, Silva 16)
Karunaratne stands tall and hits just wide of mid-off for his fourth boundary. Anderson responds by finding his outside edge, although it drops well short of second slip.
    6/13/2014 3:15:40 PM
  • Over 10 - Sri Lanka 40-0 (Karunaratne 24, Silva 16)
Broad continues to probe away with that back-of-a-length attack. Silva plays defensively throughout a maiden.
    6/13/2014 3:16:58 PM
  • Over 11 - Sri Lanka 43-0 (Karunaratne 27, Silva 16)
The left-handed Karunaratne clips off his pads for three. Silva is getting a serious examination of his technique, again edging short of the slips off Anderson.
    6/13/2014 3:20:49 PM
  • [4]Over 12 - Sri Lanka 54-0 (Karunaratne 38, Silva 16)
Karunaratne hits two fours - one on each side of the wicket - off Broad to complete a half-century opening stand with Silva from 69 balls. Karunaratne picks up three more off his hip to make it 11 from the over.
    6/13/2014 3:25:28 PM
  • Jordan is coming on at the Pavilion End for his first bowl in Test cricket.
    6/13/2014 3:25:42 PM
  • Karunaratne c Prior b Jordan 38 [wicket]

Jordan strikes with his third ball in Test cricket, Karunaratne edging  a drive through to the wicketkeeper. It was a good delivery, angled across the left-hander and drawing him into the shot.
    6/13/2014 3:27:17 PM
  • England needed some inspiration & Chris Jordan has delivered in his first over! Karunaratne gone for 38.

  • [andrewstrauss] It was a really good length that got Karunaratne driving – what a start to Jordan’s international career!”

  • [4]Over 13 - Sri Lanka 58-1 (Silva 16, Sangakkara 4)
Karunaratne's exit brings Sangakkara to the middle. He average 58 in Tests overall but that drops to 35 in England. Sangakkara is off the mark first ball, clipping to the square-leg boundary but then has to dig out a pinpoint yorker to end a successful first Test over for Jordan.
    6/13/2014 3:33:49 PM
  • [4]Over 14 - Sri Lanka 64-1 (Silva 22, Sangakkara 4)
Silva helps a short ball from Broad down to fine-leg for four but is then beaten outside off-stump with one that seamed away a touch. Broad drifts onto leg-stump later in the over and is picked off for two by Silva.
    6/13/2014 3:36:55 PM
  • [stats] The difference in Kumar Sangakkara’s overall Test average (58.07 before this innings) and his average in England (30.58) is the largest of any of the 91 players to have scored at least 4,000 Test runs and played at least 9 Tests in England.
    6/13/2014 3:40:42 PM
  • Over 15 - Sri Lanka 72-1 (Silva 27, Sangakkara 7)
Jordan's bowled some good deliveries in his opening two overs, banging it into the seam at 88 mph, but has strayed down the leg-side a few times as well.
    6/13/2014 3:42:07 PM
  • Plunkett is coming on for his first bowl in Test cricket for seven years.

  • Over 16 - Sri Lanka 72-1 (Silva 27, Sangakkara 7)
Plunkett's first delivery in Test cricket for seven years is way down the leg-side. The over improves from that point, including one that seams past Silva's outside edge. Maiden.

  • [4]Over 17 - Sri Lanka 77-1 (Silva 27, Sangakkara 12)
England have given Sangakkara a flyer here, another freebie from Jordan on his pads races away to square-leg for four.
    6/13/2014 3:49:55 PM
  • Over 18 - Sri Lanka 81-1 (Silva 27, Sangakkara 15)
Plunkett's working up some good pace, hitting 90 mph on the speed gun. Silva plays and misses again outside his off-stump to end the over.
