England v Sri Lanka, First Test

  • Over 19 - Sri Lanka 82-1 (Silva 27, Sangakkara 15)
Jordan is angling it across the left-handed Sangakkara, trying to tempt him into the drive - as he did with Karunaratne - with a packed slip cordon. Sangakkara happy to leave alone.

  • [4]Over 20 - Sri Lanka 86-1 (Silva 31, Sangakkara 15)
Nod of the head from Silva after Plunkett again beats him outside off-stump with one that seams away. Plunkett strays onto leg-stump later in the over and is clipped away for four with a flourish by Silva.

  • Over 22 - Sri Lanka 90-1 (Silva 34, Sangakkara 15)
Sam Robson is England's new man at short-leg. That's a job that's been passed from Cook to Bell to Root in recent years. Plunkett has fallen over a couple of times in his follow-through, not sure what to make of that.

  • Over 23 - Sri Lanka 90-1 (Silva 34, Sangakkara 15)
Silva plays and misses outside off-stump again. Maiden from Jordan.

  • Cook mixing it up at Lord's in search of that valuable wicket. Moeen Ali into the attack.

  • Over 24 - Sri Lanka 91-1 (Silva 34, Sangakkara 16)
Moeen Ali into the attack for his first bowl in Test cricket. Perfectly decent first over, which costs him just a single driven to cover by Sangakkara. Don't think he bowled his doosra, but then I can barely pick my own nose.

  • Over 25 - Sri Lanka 92-1 (Silva 34, Sangakkara 17)
Good over from Jordan, with a short ball angling back in at Silva forcing him to take some sharp evasive action. Ends up losing his balance and putting his hand on the floor, but manages to get out of the way.

  • Over 26 - Sri Lanka 92-1 (Silva 34, Sangakkara 17)
Maiden over from Moeen to Sangakkara. No real spin yet for the Worcestershire man, but his line and length's been impeccable. First innings on a flat Lord's pitch it's a bit much to expect more anything much more than containment.

  • Over 27 - Sri Lanka 96-1 (Silva 38, Sangakkara 17)
Lovely shot from Silva, driving Jordan on the up through the covers for four. England have squeezed the runs in recent over, but the shackles were broken there. Sri Lanka making things very hard for England here.
    6/13/2014 4:37:49 PM
  • Over 28 - Sri Lanka 98-1 (Silva 39, Sangakkara 18)
Another decent over from Moeen here, just two singles off it. Silva's is off a thick inside edge after being deceived in the flight.
    6/13/2014 4:37:56 PM
  • Another big call from the third umpire. This was given NOT OUT. Close call. Silva survives.

  • Over 29 - Sri Lanka 98-1 (Silva 39, Sangakkara 18)
Broad back into the attack and getting a hint of reverse swing to find Silva's outside edge. Prior claims the catch but the third umpire decides the ball just kissed the grass on its way into the gloves. Probably a fair enough decision. Cracking over, though.
    6/13/2014 4:45:06 PM
  • Over 30 - Sri Lanka 101-1 (Silva 39, Sangakkara 21)
A misfield at midwicket earns three runs for Sangakkara and a stern look from Anderson, whose haircut coupled with a sullen demeanour after that mistake makes him look more and more like Morrissey.
    6/13/2014 4:51:20 PM
  • Over 31 - Sri Lanka 109-1 (Silva 39, Sangakkara 25)
Sangakkara leaves one outside off stump, and the ball just dies on its way through to Prior who can't gather on the half-volley and gives up four byes. Sanga adds four more in classy style, punching the ball through cover-point as Broad drops short and offers just enough width for the left-hander to free his arms. Sangakkara climbs above Allan Border and into eighth spot on the all-time Test runs list.

  • Over 32 -Sri Lanka 113-1 (Silva 43, Sangakkara 25)
Anderson too definitely getting this ball to go the other way now. Finds Silva's outside edge but the ball takes a shocking bounce in front of Bell at gully, looping over the fielder and away for four. Ball pitched into some kind of drainage cover just off the square.

  • Hehehe.. Yup.. RT @KSSKsam : Huge credit should go to @sanath07 for putting Silva as the opener tell it in the box hehe will you ?
  • Over 33 - Sri Lanka 116-1 (Silva 44, Sangakkara 26)
Broad starts the over with a big looping bouncer to Sangakkara, rightly called wide as it sails over the left-hander's head. A single apiece for the batsmen off a quiet over.
    6/13/2014 5:03:41 PM
  • Over 34 - Sri Lanka 124-1 (Silva 52, Sangakkara 26)
[50]Anderson bangs one in short but Silva is up to the challenge, pulling the ball away between midwicket and mid-on for four. Wasn't perfectly timed, but was in good control and got enough of it to pick up the boundary. And another four, edged safely with soft hands through the slip cordon, brings up a fine, battling half-century. Good effort after a day and a half in the field (and two overs of wicketkeeping).

  • Another four, edged safely with soft hands through the slip cordon, brings up a battling half-century for Silva.

  • [shanewarne] Sri Lanka are doing well here – England haven’t bowled badly - but it just shows you that with the sun out, batting conditions are good. I think that no matter what the conditions, you need a frontline spinner for the variety. But the selectors probably think Moeen Ali is as good as anyone else in county cricket.

    6/13/2014 5:11:18 PM
  • Over 35 - Sri Lanka 126-1 (Silva 53, Sangakkara 27)
Plunkett back into the attack for England, but there's nothing much happening for him at the moment. England not bowling badly by any means here, but getting little joy out of Silva and Sangakkara.

Good maiden over from Anderson. Silva watchful.

  • Over 37 - Sri Lanka 128-1 (Silva 54, Sangakkara 28)
Two singles off Plunkett's over. Three overs, perhaps, for Sri Lanka to survive to complete a very acceptable session of batting here as they bid to get to the second Test at Leeds all-square. Or maybe better if something really extraordinary happens.

  • Over 39 - Sri Lanka 140-1 (Silva 62, Sangakkara 32)
Plunkett gets through his last over of the day, but it's not a good one. Might even have picked up an injury judging by the way he's walking back to his mark. Two boundaries off the over, the first clipped fine on the legside by Silva and the second steered between point and cover by Sangakkara. Great response by Sri Lanka this.
    6/13/2014 5:29:36 PM
  • Over 40 - Sri Lanka 140-1 (Silva 62, Sangakkara 32)
Silva wants a single from the fifth ball of the final over of the day. Sangakkara, wily old pro that he is, not remotely interested. Maiden over from Jordan to end the day six overs short of the full quota, the only criticism you could really make of either side for their efforts today.
    6/13/2014 5:34:01 PM
  • Close: Sri Lanka 140-1, trail by 435 runs
[close]Superb effort from Joe Root and the aggressive England tail to lift the total to 575-9 before the declaration came, but Sri Lanka have responded well to reach 140-1 at stumps. England have bowled perfectly well but, after offering a bit of assistance yesterday, this pitch now looks very flat and good for batting. England have a lot of hard work to do to try and force a victory here.
