England v Sri Lanka, T20

The Oval

  • Over 8: Sri Lanka 68/2 (Vithanage 31, Thirimanne 12)
With third-man inside the circle, Vithanage is able to cut three fours in a row. Bopara, who is operating from round-the-wicket to the left-handers, offering far too much width. Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler fumbles the take when he might have had a stumping chance later in the over, Vithanage over-balancing. Tough one.

  • Over 9: Sri Lanka 76/2 (Vithanage 37, Thirimanne 14)
Vithanage reverse sweeps for another four, just clearing a leaping Bopara at backward point. Again Sri Lanka happy to get a boundary off Tredwell early in the over and then push it around for singles.

  • Over 10: Sri Lanka 79/3 (Thirimanne 15, Chandimal 1)
Vithanage was fuming, he just guided a catch to Carberry. He should have tried to hit it much harder. The previous delivery, Jordan was left wringing his hands after putting down a low chance after Vithanage threw the hands into a full toss. Woakes greets new batsman Dinesh Chandimal with a sharp bouncer.
    5/20/2014 5:43:24 PM
  • Chandimal c Hales b Root 7[wicket]

One ball after launching a big six with the same shot, Chandimal slog-sweeps high in the air and Hales sets himself and takes a steepling catch at long-on with reverse hands.
    5/20/2014 5:44:39 PM
  • [6]Over 11: Sri Lanka 86/4 (Thirimanne 16, Mathews 0)
Root suckered Chandimal into that shot, throwing it up a little wider than the previous ball which had disappeared a long way. Angelo Mathews is the new batsman.

    5/20/2014 5:46:34 PM
  • Over 9: England 64/3 (Hales 28, Morgan 2)
Thisara Perera, another seamer, gets his first chance to turn his arm over. There's a slip for Morgan but not Hales. Four singles and a hard-run two in the over. England need 120 off 66 balls.
    5/20/2014 7:27:25 PM
  • Over 10: England 74/3 (Hales 31, Morgan 4)
Malinga decides the time is right to bring himself back on for his second over. Wicketkeeper Chandimal is interested in a caught-behind appeal after Morgan is beaten on the inside edge driving - but nobody else was. Malinga swings one way down the leg-side for five wides. The over ends with a big lbw appeal being turned down against Morgan. Umpire Michael Gough is not interested but Hawkeye says it pitched on and was swinging back to hit leg-stump. England need 110 off 60 balls.

    5/20/2014 7:35:58 PM
  • Morgan c Lakmal b Thisara Perera 5[wicket]

Morgan chips a full toss towards long-off and Lakmal takes a superb catch low down diving forward.
    5/20/2014 7:37:44 PM
  • Over 12: England 91/4 (Hales 45, Buttler 1)
After Morgan's exit, Hales drives square for four to move past 1,000 runs in T20 internationals. New batsman Buttler gets off the mark first ball with a single poked into the covers. England need 93 off 48 balls.
    5/20/2014 7:40:39 PM
  • Over 13: England 98/4 (Hales 46, Buttler 7)
Senanayake continues. Buttler drags a reverse sweep for four behind square but otherwise it's just singles. Hales misses with a pull at the final ball of the over. England need 86 off 42 balls.
    5/20/2014 7:43:23 PM
  • Over 14: England 111/4 (Hales 47, Buttler 19)
Buttler hits Lakmal for back-to-back boundaries - one on each side of the wicket - to just about keep England's hopes alive. Buttler keeps the strike with a drop-and-run single to make it 13 from the over. England need 73 off 36 balls.

Buttler misses with a ramp, Thisara Perera reading his intentions and producing a pinpoint back-of-the-hand slower ball. Buttler dispatches the next ball through the covers for four, although Dilshan should have stopped it. Hales completes a 33-ball half-century (6x4, 1x6) with a drive down the ground for four. England need 62 off 30 balls.
    5/20/2014 7:53:11 PM
  • Buttler c Dilshan b Kulasekara 26 [wicket]

Buttler fails to get hold of a full toss and Dilshan moves to his left to take the catch on the midwicket boundary. That came off the toe-end and still almost went for six!
    5/20/2014 7:55:27 PM
  • Over 16: England 133/5 (Hales 62, Bopara 0)
Buttler walks off shaking his head, that should have been sent out of the park. Hales clears long-off for six after Kulasekara misses with his yorker, slices another drive for two and then keeps the strike with a single. New batsman Ravi Bopara is yet to face. England need 51 off 24 balls.
    5/20/2014 7:58:54 PM

  • Hales b Malinga 66[wicket]

Hales is bowled by a slower ball aiming towards midwicket.
    5/20/2014 8:01:53 PM
  • [nasserhussain] That’s superb from Malinga. He's got the big wicket. He knows his game – he backs himself. He bowled a slower ball the ball before and got hit for four. A lot of bowlers would have bottled it and gone for the yorker but he backed himself to bowl another slower ball and deceive him he did. Hales has played beautifully but he’s gone for 66 and with it, you’d think, England’s hopes.

    5/20/2014 8:02:58 PM
  • Over 17: England 143/6 (Bopara 1, Jordan 4)
Hales departs one delivery after smearing a slightly shorter ball for four to straight midwicket. Malinga continues with his slower ball policy throughout the remainder of the over, bowling Hales and confusing new batsman Jordan, who does at least manage to get an edge away for four down to third-man. England need 41 off 18 balls.
    5/20/2014 8:04:13 PM
  • Over 18: England 156/6 (Bopara 13, Jordan 4)
Bopara leans back to drive over extra cover for four and flicks a full toss to midwicket for another four to make it 13 from Kulasekara's final over. England need 28 off 12 balls.
    5/20/2014 8:07:59 PM
  • Jordan b Malinga 5 [wicket]

Jordan drags an inside edge onto his stumps.
    5/20/2014 8:10:24 PM

Malinga again deals mainly in slower balls, taking the wicket of Jordan to go with four singles. Malinga finishes with 3-28. Bopara will be on strike at the start of the final over. England need 24 off 6 balls.
    5/20/2014 8:13:02 PM
  • Lakmal will bowl the final over.
    5/20/2014 8:13:10 PM
  • [nasserhussain] England have no answer to the genius that is Malinga. It’s slower ball, slower ball, slower ball and he’s deceived them all.

    5/20/2014 8:14:53 PM
  • [6]Over 20: England 174/7 (Bopara 28, Woakes 2)
Bopara misses with a big swing to start the final over and then digs out a yorker down the ground for two. The Essex right-hander then hits a six over square-leg and dispatches a full toss for four in the same area to leave England needing 12 off the final two balls... Lakmal gets his yorker on the spot to limit Bopara to a single off the penultimate ball. Woakes dabs the final delivery to midwicket for a single. Sri Lanka win by nine runs.
