Will Hayler blogs live from Day 2 of the Dante Meeting

  • Investec, Investec, Investec.
    5/15/2014 12:29:21 PM
  • good but vgood
    5/15/2014 12:29:27 PM
  • Thank you, sir.
    5/15/2014 12:29:30 PM
  • They're heading down to the start for the 1:45 - Inxile went down early
    5/15/2014 12:39:22 PM
  • Not long 'til they're off scorching a trail down the Knavesmire. You've got two minutes to get your bets on!
    5/15/2014 12:43:52 PM
  • For those who are wondering, I'm on Elusivity and Top Boy each-way here. I'm wary of Normal Equilibrium for the sprint king, Robert Cowell, though.
    5/15/2014 12:46:10 PM
  • AND THEY'RE OFF in the first race on Dante Day!
    5/15/2014 12:48:56 PM
  • FULL RESULT: 1.45 - 1st Monsieur Joe (25/1) 2nd Elusivity (14/1) 3rd Top Boy (14/1) 4th Ashpan Sam (13/2f)
    5/15/2014 12:51:49 PM
  • What a game. First Top Boy and then Elusivity looked like winning the race but I didn't see Graham Lee on Monsieur Joe swooping down the stand's rail before it was too late. Lee didn't enjoy the best of times at Chester last week but he's now got two on the board following on from Clever Cookie's impressive success yesterday.

  • Hello Will, like a few other bloggers looking for a Dante upset, I've sided with Bunker. I agree with all your reservations in respect of True Story and of course the concerns about tractability equally apply to the Chapple-Hyam colt. However, I'm not sure that True Story is even the standout form pick. He was rated 100 on 2-y-o form while Bunker achieved 107 in Deauville. Given the Hurricane Run colt's potential to improve vastly over middle distances I would say that the market has got the prices wrong.
    5/15/2014 1:01:24 PM
  • I see where you're coming from Falbrav, on official ratings True Story is 116 and Bunker is only 107, but Hannon's charge is yet to have his first start this season and, he could indeed, be open to the necessary improvement to win today. Krakonite's victory last week certainly suggests that if Bunker has progressed in the same manner then he should go very close today.
    5/15/2014 1:05:05 PM
  • Nice to hear from the winning trainer Paul Midgley, who was thrilled to have his first winner at York - his local track - for three years. Best of all, he wasn't being all clever after the event such as trainers can so easily seem. "Look, he jumps, he travels and then it's all about whether he gets the gaps. The gaps came perfectly for him today, but will they do next time?" Next time is likely to be at Epsom in the Investec Dash, for which the winner is 20/1 from 33/1 with Sky Bet. "I'd have said before today that I wouldn't have thought Epsom would suit him, but after that I don't know." You might get worse bets than that 20/1.
    5/15/2014 1:09:28 PM
  • well done on the first, two each ways combined as a good as winner? I backed perfect heart to beat him taht day so wasnt watching mr snoozey or what jason hart did, if you can elaborate , without cursing (I'm thinking) then i can follow any confidence you have on him....noticed hes kept the ride though????!!!
    5/15/2014 1:09:40 PM
  • They're not as good, as you well know, but nevertheless we've got ammo in the tank Hadley so I'm playing up on Ambivalent. I really do think she's pretty solid for the first three. As for Mr Snoozy, if you remember that race, he was the horse that shot clear at the start of the home turn and effectively turned the race into a contest run in two different counties. A little more patience from Mr Hart today and we could be cooking on gas.
    5/15/2014 1:11:08 PM
  • Can Frankie fans finally collect here with Thistle Bird? Once again, he finished out with the washing aboard Judge N Jury in the opener. As I mentioned earlier, he's on a pretty rotten run at present.
    5/15/2014 1:13:46 PM
  • You get a bit of the flavour from these couple of pics, but once again the Dante meeting is delivering today with pleasant weather and crowds a little lighter than usually turn up for the Ebor etc. It's one of my favourite meetings of the year - and I'll like it even more if Ambivalent can be persuaded to oblige.
    5/15/2014 1:16:36 PM
  • hes on fire!!! making HAYYYYY
    5/15/2014 1:19:36 PM
  • A fine, fine ride from Atzeni, who didn't panic when challenged as he knew his mount would pick up again. She's a bit quirky, but she wants to win, and that's half of the battle.
    5/15/2014 1:20:59 PM
  • 2.15 RESULT: 1st Ambivalent 9/2, 2nd Secret Gesture 9/2, 3rd Odeliz 8/1.
    5/15/2014 1:21:34 PM
  • She was ponied to the start today - possibly for the first time as I don't think I can recall them doing it with her last year. Maybe that helped her settled better? Perhaps Mr Varian will reveal all...
    5/15/2014 1:24:02 PM
  • Mango Diva in the next, typical Stoute late developing mare!
    5/15/2014 1:24:05 PM
  • Ambivalent, Bunker, and Navajo Chief - 3 way double and single treble? please come through and pay for my holiday next week!!! If you tip them Will, its going to happen!
    5/15/2014 1:24:42 PM
  • There may be a backlog on my messages -
    apologies.
    5/15/2014 1:24:58 PM
  • It's obviously a good start BB. I haven't had a bet on the Dante, but if it helps you move closer to paying for next week's holiday, then I'm tipping Bunker!
    5/15/2014 1:25:36 PM
  • Going to Poland tomorrow Will so hoping Bunker provides some zlotys as he's doubled up with Ambivalent
    5/15/2014 1:25:44 PM
  • Potential sponsors note: the average profile of readers of this blog is clearly men who have backed Bunker who are about to embark upon travels
    5/15/2014 1:26:41 PM
  • I think I'd get on with Roger Varian. He always seems like a thoroughly decent bloke, just like his former guv'nor. The plan with Ambivalent is a possible return to the Curragh for the Pretty Polly Stakes before an autumn campaign.
    5/15/2014 1:31:35 PM
  • He said: "She's as tough as nails and big hearted. It's been a great performance by the team as she is a rare animal, very highly-strung. We discovered in Dubai that she takes great comfort from the pony."
    5/15/2014 1:32:51 PM
  • Asked whether the pony had a name, Varian replied: "Err... no. It's a pony." Henceforth, I will be referring to it as the pony with no name.
    5/15/2014 1:34:54 PM
  • Some of the snappier-dressed members of the crowd today.

    5/15/2014 1:37:54 PM
  • They're heading to post for the Dante Stakes
    5/15/2014 1:41:02 PM
  • AROD going some what unlooked he has to improve a lot but beat an well bred oaks entry last time and should go close today if he settles. All of Hannons have improved for a run. True story need to grow up a bit as well. Him and AROD to fight out finish. Bunker back in third
    5/15/2014 1:41:03 PM
  • Hi Andy, Arod won as easily as you like last time out but the race was nothing to shout home about, nor has there been any subsequent winners. But you can only beat what's put in front of you and Arod is a clearly improving animal. As for Richard Hannon, all of his runners have performed poorly so far at this meeting but he's already saddled two winners down at Salisbury and could well get on the board here with Bunker. Time will tell.
    5/15/2014 1:44:32 PM
  • True Story was quite keen to post but Fallon has managed to keep a lid on him thus far.
    5/15/2014 1:45:25 PM
  • They're loading for the Dante.... AND THEY'RE OFF...
    5/15/2014 1:47:06 PM
  • And it's The Grey Gatsby who wins the Dante. Could it be the first Yorkshire-trained winner of the Epsom Classic since the horse after whom this race was named? Almost certainly not, as he'd have to be supplemented and looks far from a certain stayer over a mile and a half but that won't stop connections of the winner from enjoying a first prize of more than £85,000.
    5/15/2014 1:51:06 PM
  • Unsurprisingly, a stewards' enquiry has been called with the winner having hung right across the track to the stands' rail, hampering True Story more than the others, in the process. Do I think the result will be changed? No.
    5/15/2014 1:52:09 PM
  • Mixed messages to take out of that race. Is it a boost for Toormore on the Craven form? Is it a damning indictment of where the British contenders for the Derby are at? Is it another nightmare for Frankie Dettori?
    (yes to that one)
    5/15/2014 2:04:25 PM
  • AND it's RESULT STANDS, RESULT STANDS
    5/15/2014 2:04:37 PM
  • 2.45 RESULT 1st The Grey Gatsby 9/1, 2nd Arod 8/1
    5/15/2014 2:05:23 PM
  • Hi Will just heard the trainer say he will go for the French derby
    5/15/2014 2:05:39 PM
  • You are quite right, sir. That is the plan. Kevin Ryan denied that this was a surprise and confirmed the Prix du Jockey-Club as the plan.
    5/15/2014 2:06:08 PM
  • Meanwhile, Arod and True Story are both still on course for Epsom. Peter Chapple-Hyam said: "I had the option of running him on Saturday at Newmarket but we came here as this is the best Derby trial. Maybe over another half-furlong we would have won, but he keeps improving and we're really pleased with him. The main objective was to come here and switch him off and he definitely needs fast ground. Maybe I left him a bit too fresh, but he's a late-maturing type and I think there's still more to come." Of True Story, Saeed bin Suroor reported: "He's still going for the Derby and he'll definitely improve for the step up to a mile and a half and some fast ground."
