NatWest T20 Blast - May 17

Middlesex take on Essex, then play Sussex in a NatWest T20 Blast double-header at Lord's.

  • Just heard on the radio it's due to be the hottest day of the year today, so get down to @HomeOfCricket for the Double Header!! #T20Blast
  • The NatWest T20 Blast arrives at Lord’s packing a powerful punch in the form of a double-header!
    5/17/2014 9:09:48 AM
  • It’s a little slice of history (and a taste of Finals Day) as Middlesex play back-to-back games – against Essex Eagles and Sussex Sharks – for the first time in the group stages and with the weather set fair it should be quite some occasion.
    5/17/2014 9:10:12 AM
  • Sussex arrive in St John’s Wood off the back of a dramatic two-wicket win over Surrey on Friday, the opening night of the new NatWest T20 Blast, after Yasir Arafat struck Jade Dernbach’s final two balls for four to clinch victory. Our cameras were at Trent Bridge, where Samit Patel drove Nottinghamshire to a 33-run win over Lancashire.

  • .@ravibopara climbing into a few in the nets @homeofcricket . We're on air for Midd v Essex @ Midd v Sussex ... vine.co/v/MX0hedpZwBh

  • Fair to say Ravi seemed to be enjoying himself out there before popping over for a quick chat with Alastair Cook, who has been good enough to give us an interview you can see in the build-up to today's opening match - which, as mentioned below, is Middlesex v Essex from 12pm.

  • So could this double-header launch Middlesex's campaign in style - or derail it from the start? Our Middlesex man in the comms box, Andrew Strauss is leaning towards the latter...
    5/17/2014 9:38:18 AM
  • [andrewstrauss] There are two ways of looking at it. On the one hadn Middlesex get two bites of the cherry, they know the conditions of the ground so in the second game they might have an advantage. But on the other side of the coin, a game of Twenty20 cricket takes a lot out of you, psychologically as much as anything, so I’d say it’s a slight disadvantage for Middlesex.”

  • So - you may have noticed that we've a few casualties from last night's game. Bumble and Vaughany haven't made the trip down south but the good news is that Nass is back in the house, reminiscing over some of his 'funnies' from yesterday's commentary stint. Here's genius at work...
    5/17/2014 9:51:36 AM
  • Nass - on form but held back for overs 8-13.

  • We've got the thumbs up from Pinky the Panther and we're on air! @Middlesex_CCC http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bn1MIacIQAAQNQH.jpg

  • .@EssexCricket have won the toss and will bowl first in our opening match. Napier and Topley back in, and Panesar plays too. #midvess
  • Eoin Morgan admits that he probably would have had a bat first if he'd won the toss - and is a bit coy about the merits of playing two games on one day. It will be mentally and physically tough, and they have a Championship game starting tomorrow, so the schedule is Rocky-esque.

  • So no Finn for Middlesex, but plenty of options nonetheless. Perhaps the biggest pre-match news comes courtesy of Nass...
    5/17/2014 10:42:39 AM
  • [Nasserhussain] Monty says he has a new delivery. He didn’t tell us what it was – whether it’s just the one that turns or the one that lands! But he says he’s got a new delivery up his sleeve, so it will be interesting to see what it is!”

    5/17/2014 10:43:06 AM
  • The fireworks and flame-throwers (just what you need on a toasty day) are poised to fire into action and there's a small guard of honour awaiting the players in front of the pavilion.
    5/17/2014 10:45:50 AM
  • All eyes will be on Essex's box office overseas player, Jesse Ryder...

    5/17/2014 10:51:28 AM
  • [andrewstrauss] Ryder has got very quick hands. He tends to favour the leg-side but at the top of the innings, in the powerplay in particular, he can score all around the ground. That’s what makes him so dangerous. The fact that he has had so many chances with New Zealand shows how much they rate him.

  • Monty Panesar is going to open the bowling from the Nursery End. Malan and Bopara are our Sky Insiders today...
    5/17/2014 10:58:48 AM
  • Over 1: Middlesex 7/0 (Malan 6, Stirling 1)
Malan threads a forcing shot off the back foot through a packed off-side for the first four of the day. First of many judging by the pitch, looks full of runs. No sign of Panesar's 'new' delivery yet...
    5/17/2014 11:03:55 AM
  • At the start of the innings WASP suggested a par score for @Middlesex_CCC would be 175. It's now 185. Midd 18-0 off 2 http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bn1UQZ3IQAAYxxT.jpg

  • Over 2: Middlesex 19/0 (Malan 17, Stirling 2)
Graham Napier's opening over disappears for 12 runs, including a pair of Malan boundaries, the second of which was carved over the top of Alastair Cook at slip.

    5/17/2014 11:08:18 AM
  • [wicket]Stirling b Newby 3

Stirling is bowled aiming a big drive through the covers after giving himself some room.
    5/17/2014 11:12:08 AM
  • Nasser denies he's ever suggested that popping creases should be painted green - or red, for that matter. Midd 22-1 off 3, Stirling (3) out
  • Over 3: Middlesex 22/1 (Malan 18, Morgan 1)
Stirling tried and failed with the same shot the ball before his dismissal. His exit brings Eoin Morgan to the middle. Good start from Oliver Newby, a tall seamer (with an Alice band!) who is on loan from Lancashire.
    5/17/2014 11:15:15 AM
  • Over 4: Middlesex 32/1 (Malan 27, Morgan 2)
Malan twice drives Napier through the covers for four, the second of which beat the man who had gone back on the fence to try and cut out that shot.

  • Over 5: Middlesex 42/1 (Malan 34, Morgan 3)
Newby drops too short and Malan cuts through the backward point for his sixth four. A rare error from Newby, who is cramping the two left-handers for room.
    5/17/2014 11:21:53 AM
  • .@Middlesex_CCC post 53-1 off six overs. "A good, promising start," says Paul Allott. WASP is hovering at 181. Malan 35*, Morgan 13*
  • [6]Over 6: Middlesex 53/1 (Malan 35, Morgan 13)
The introduction of left-arm seamer Reece Topley proves expensive as Morgan gets into his stride with the first six of the day, pulled to midwicket. Topley responds well with the final two deliveries, both dots, after 11 had come from his first four balls.
