NatWest T20 Blast - May 17

Middlesex take on Essex, then play Sussex in a NatWest T20 Blast double-header at Lord's.

  • Fair to say Ravi seemed to be enjoying himself out there before popping over for a quick chat with Alastair Cook, who has been good enough to give us an interview you can see in the build-up to today's opening match - which, as mentioned below, is Middlesex v Essex from 12pm.

  • So could this double-header launch Middlesex's campaign in style - or derail it from the start? Our Middlesex man in the comms box, Andrew Strauss is leaning towards the latter...

  • [andrewstrauss] There are two ways of looking at it. On the one hadn Middlesex get two bites of the cherry, they know the conditions of the ground so in the second game they might have an advantage. But on the other side of the coin, a game of Twenty20 cricket takes a lot out of you, psychologically as much as anything, so I’d say it’s a slight disadvantage for Middlesex.”

  • So - you may have noticed that we've a few casualties from last night's game. Bumble and Vaughany haven't made the trip down south but the good news is that Nass is back in the house, reminiscing over some of his 'funnies' from yesterday's commentary stint. Here's genius at work...
    5/17/2014 9:51:36 AM
  • Nass - on form but held back for overs 8-13.

  • We've got the thumbs up from Pinky the Panther and we're on air! @Middlesex_CCC http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bn1MIacIQAAQNQH.jpg

  • .@EssexCricket have won the toss and will bowl first in our opening match. Napier and Topley back in, and Panesar plays too. #midvess
  • Eoin Morgan admits that he probably would have had a bat first if he'd won the toss - and is a bit coy about the merits of playing two games on one day. It will be mentally and physically tough, and they have a Championship game starting tomorrow, so the schedule is Rocky-esque.

  • So no Finn for Middlesex, but plenty of options nonetheless. Perhaps the biggest pre-match news comes courtesy of Nass...
    5/17/2014 10:42:39 AM
  • [Nasserhussain] Monty says he has a new delivery. He didn’t tell us what it was – whether it’s just the one that turns or the one that lands! But he says he’s got a new delivery up his sleeve, so it will be interesting to see what it is!”

    5/17/2014 10:43:06 AM
  • The fireworks and flame-throwers (just what you need on a toasty day) are poised to fire into action and there's a small guard of honour awaiting the players in front of the pavilion.
    5/17/2014 10:45:50 AM
  • All eyes will be on Essex's box office overseas player, Jesse Ryder...

    5/17/2014 10:51:28 AM
  • [andrewstrauss] Ryder has got very quick hands. He tends to favour the leg-side but at the top of the innings, in the powerplay in particular, he can score all around the ground. That’s what makes him so dangerous. The fact that he has had so many chances with New Zealand shows how much they rate him.

  • RYDER'S RUNS

    5/17/2014 10:55:17 AM
  • Monty Panesar is going to open the bowling from the Nursery End. Malan and Bopara are our Sky Insiders today...
    5/17/2014 10:58:48 AM
  • Over 1: Middlesex 7/0 (Malan 6, Stirling 1)
Malan threads a forcing shot off the back foot through a packed off-side for the first four of the day. First of many judging by the pitch, looks full of runs. No sign of Panesar's 'new' delivery yet...
    5/17/2014 11:03:55 AM
  • At the start of the innings WASP suggested a par score for @Middlesex_CCC would be 175. It's now 185. Midd 18-0 off 2 http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bn1UQZ3IQAAYxxT.jpg

  • .@Middlesex_CCC have won the toss and will bowl first against @SussexCCC . @NatWestT20Blast #midvsus Middlesex unchanged.
  • 5/17/2014 2:37:01 PM
  • Second chance for the Middlesex lads.

  • Luke Wright on his England future

Talking to the selectors, certainly the door doesn’t seem closed. I hope not. I feel like I’ve had four bad games - three in Australia and one in West Indies – and I didn’t get the chance to put it right in the World Cup. I’ve played well in all different formats around the world and I’ve put in some good performances in Twenty20 cricket. I certainly think I’ve got something to offer to the England side. But there are a lot of good players out there so I’ve got to go out there and show to Peter Moores and the selectors that I’m good enough to get back in.

  • What a great way to start off our @NatWestT20Blast campaign with a great win. #UpUpEagles
  • Here come the players for the second-part of our double-header... Dan Christian to open up from the Nursery End. The WASP Par Score has gone up to 180 due to the pitch and the small boundary square.

  • 5/17/2014 3:00:05 PM
  • [wicket]Wright b Christian 1

Christian salvages an otherwise horrible opening over by yorking Wright with the final ball. Wright played over the top of it.
    5/17/2014 3:05:17 PM
  • Over 1: Sussex 10/1 (Machan 6, Joyce 0)
Christian has struggled with the Lord's slope today, starting off with a short, wide freebie that is carved away by Machan for four through backward point. There is also a no-ball and a wide before the wicket of Wright to finish.

    5/17/2014 3:08:54 PM
  • Over 2: Sussex 17/1 (Machan 7, Joyce 6)
Off-spinner Rayner again is given the new ball and his over is going well until the final ball, which is too short and gets pulled away for four by the left-handed Joyce.
    5/17/2014 3:10:50 PM
  • Wright - back on the bench.

    5/17/2014 3:12:13 PM
  • Over 3: Sussex 22/1 (Machan 8, Joyce 10)
Harris into the attack with memories of his penultimate over mauling against Essex still fresh in the mind. Again a good over is ruined by a short ball from the final delivery and again it's Joyce who pulls it away for four.
    5/17/2014 3:13:08 PM
  • Gutted to not make the game today, fingers crossed my leg gets better for Friday! Great crowd at lords. #GOSBTS
  • Over 4: Sussex 25/1 (Machan 10, Joyce 11)
Middlesex have used four bowlers in the first four overs again, probably a pre-scripted tactic. Roland-Jones is unable to get a hand on a sharp return drive from Joyce. Three singles from the over.
    5/17/2014 3:16:33 PM
  • [wicket]Machan c Christian b Harris 10

Machan advances to drive but just fails to clear a leaping Christian at mid-on. Excellent catch as he had to move to his left and time his jump.
