NatWest T20 Blast - May 17

Middlesex take on Essex, then play Sussex in a NatWest T20 Blast double-header at Lord's.

  • Over 5: Sussex 27/2 (Joyce 12, Hamilton-Brown 1)
Much better from Middlesex, both from the bowlers and the fielders, in the last two overs. Rory Hamilton-Brown is the new batsman and he's off the mark with a single third ball.
    5/17/2014 3:21:54 PM
  • Over 6: Sussex 35/2 (Joyce 14, Hamilton-Brown 6)
Hamilton-Brown edges a big drive over the vacant slip region and away for four. Roland-Jones' lbw appeal against Hamilton-Brown is turned down by umpire Illingworth. Just sliding past leg-stump but was tight. That's the powerplay finished, Sussex only hit four boundaries during it.

  • Highlights from the earlier game between Middlesex and Essex...

    5/17/2014 3:26:01 PM
  • [wicket]Joyce c Malan b Patel 14

Joyce hoists a short ball from left-arm spinner Patel high in the air and Malan, moving in from the long-on boundary, is able to take a low catch sliding forward. It was a half-pull, half-drive from Joyce, something and nothing. Another excellent piece of work in the field.
    5/17/2014 3:27:33 PM
  • Over 7: Sussex 37/3 (Hamilton-Brown 8, Zaidi 0)
Sussex in trouble as Ashar Zaidi joins Hamilton-Brown in the middle. Conditions haven't changed much from the first match, still a good pitch, not quite as sunny.
    5/17/2014 3:30:23 PM
  • [wicket]Hamilton-Brown c Stirling b Rayner 15

Hamilton-Brown had already survived a run-out chance and only just cleared long-on earlier in Rayner's over. His innings is finally ended by another attempt to go over the top, Stirling taking a well-judged catch as it dropped over his shoulder in the covers.
    5/17/2014 3:33:36 PM
  • Over 8: Sussex 46/4 (Zaidi 2, Yardy 0)
Michael Yardy, a World T20 winner with England in 2010, is the latest Sussex batsman to make his way to the middle.
    5/17/2014 3:35:00 PM
  • Hamilton-Brown wasn't in the picture... But his reprieve was brief.

    5/17/2014 3:36:05 PM
  • Over 9: Sussex 49/4 (Zaidi 4, Yardy 1)
Patel mixes up his flight and pace well during an over costing three singles. Yardy is unsuccessful with a reverse sweep.
    5/17/2014 3:36:27 PM
  • Over 10: Sussex 58/4 (Zaidi 8, Yardy 4)
Yardy drives through the covers for a sweetly-timed four after Rayner tossed it right up.

  • Does steak pie count as high tea?

    5/17/2014 3:41:48 PM
  • Over 11: Sussex 65/4 (Zaidi 14, Yardy 7)
Christian is back into the attack and is immediately dispatched for four by the left-handed Zaidi.

    5/17/2014 3:42:18 PM
  • Over 12: Sussex 72/4 (Zaidi 17, Yardy 10)
Rayner started his career at Sussex but found his route blocked by Mushtaq Ahmed. He's a  tall off-spinner and good at altering his length if he sees the batsman advance.  Six singles and a wide from the over.
    5/17/2014 3:45:15 PM
  • [wicket]Yardy c Simpson b Christian 12

Yardy tries to dink a sweep over his left shoulder but it comes off the bottom of the bat, giving wicketkeeper Simpson a simple catch.

  • Sussex struggling here - 78-5 off 13 overs, WASP prediction is down from 180 at the start to 140.… @NatWestT20Blast
  • Over 13: Sussex 78/5 (Zaidi 19, Brown 2)
Zaidi is struggling to time the ball, as was Yardy until his demise. New batsman Ben Brown gets going with a couple from his first delivery.
    5/17/2014 3:51:15 PM
  • [wicket]Zaidi b Stirling 19

Stirling is an instant success, bowling Zaidi with his first delivery of the match.
    5/17/2014 3:52:32 PM
  • Over 14: Sussex 81/6 (Brown 3, Jordan 2)
England seamer Chris Jordan is the new Sussex batsman and, as West Indies found out in Barbados during the winter, he knows how to hit the ball. Sussex need some boundaries, they've managed six fours and a six between them thus far.
    5/17/2014 3:54:23 PM
  • Crowd a bit more animated - but they've had only six fours and one six to enjoy in Sussex's first 15 overs

    5/17/2014 3:57:14 PM
  • Over 15: Sussex 89/6 (Brown 4, Jordan 8)
Patel limits it to ones and twos,  all ofSussex's batsmen have really struggled to time the ball.
    5/17/2014 3:57:15 PM
  • Over 16: Sussex 99/6 (Brown 13, Jordan 9)
Middlesex mess up their second run-out chance of the innings. Again the fielder does his job, getting the throw in quick and early but the bowler, Stirling, drops it and then demolishes the stumps with his hands (earlier Simpson left the ball when he thought it was going to hit the stumps direct... it didn't). Brown gives himself some room and twice drives Stirling through the off-side to end Stirling's over.
    5/17/2014 4:00:09 PM
  • Over 17: Sussex 109/6 (Brown 13, Jordan 19)
The boundaries coming thick and fast now, helped by Patel bowling short and wide throughout much of his final over. Jordan is twice able to thread back-foot forcing shots through the off-side field for four. Patel finishes with 4-0-22-1
    5/17/2014 4:03:00 PM
  • [andrewstrauss] All Sussex can do now is put a score on the board and hope it puts enough pressure on Middlesex.”

    5/17/2014 4:03:19 PM
  • [wicket]Brown c Balbernie b Roland-Jones 14

Brown pulls a short ball to Balbernie on the midwicket fence. He was aiming to clear the longest boundary and failed.

    5/17/2014 4:07:12 PM
  • Balbernie lbw b Piolet 0[wicket]

Balbernie is pinned lbw for a two-ball duck. Piolet's appeal was a lone voice as wicketkeeper Brown was chasing after the ball. Nothing wrong with the decision, was going to hit leg-stump.

    5/17/2014 5:30:52 PM
  • All this travelling clearly gets to some of the older members of the squad! #oldman @smithyg83

  • Over 16: Middlesex 88/5 (Christian 13, Simpson 0)
Piolet's double strike has set up an exciting finale with Middlesex needing 41 off 24 balls. Jordan and Arafat each have two overs left so can bowl out for Sussex from here.
    5/17/2014 5:32:37 PM
  • Athers STILL struggling to come to terms with shelling out £80 for a cricket bag for his son... WITH a 15 per cent discount...
    5/17/2014 5:33:07 PM
  • [wicket]Christian c Hamilton-Brown b Arafat 14

Three wickets in eight balls for Sussex as Christian joins the procession by holing out off Arafat's bowling to Hamilton-Brown at midwicket.
    5/17/2014 5:34:52 PM
  • [nasserhussain] Things are going from bad to worse for Middlesex. Earlier they couldn’t bat well, now they can’t bat well! Yasir Arafat is showing his experience; he hasn’t gone for yorkers yet, he’s gone length. Don’t change what is working. Middlesex need to find some boundaries.

    5/17/2014 5:35:29 PM
  • Over 17: Middlesex 93/6 (Simpson 3, Rayner 1)
Superb over from Arafat, conceding just five singles to go with the wicket of Christian. He's getting his yorkers in, offering nothing for the two new batsmen to work with. Middlesex need 36 off 18 balls.
    5/17/2014 5:36:32 PM
  • Worrying times for Middlesex fans... Can they get home?

    5/17/2014 5:39:43 PM
  • Over 18: Middlesex 97/6 (Simpson 5, Rayner 2)
Jordan keeps it full and outside off-stump, bowling to his field while conceding just four runs from the over, including a wide. Middlesex need 32 off 12 balls.
    5/17/2014 5:41:54 PM
  • The evening sunshine is starting to cause the fielders some problems...

    5/17/2014 5:44:54 PM
  • Over 19: Middlesex 107/6 (Simpson 9, Rayner 8)
The setting sun is causing trouble for the fielders out in the deep. Rayner finds the boundary from the lone blemish in Arafat's over, a full toss. Rayner keeps the strike with a push-and-run single to make it 10 from the over but that still leaves Middlesex needing 22 from six balls.
    5/17/2014 5:46:08 PM
  • Great scrapping sharks!! 2 from 2. What a great team performance!!
  • Over 20: Middlesex 115/6 (Simpson 14, Rayner 9)
Jordan finishes off the job for Sussex without alarm, keeping it to ones and twos in a final over costing eight. Sussex win by 13 runs to hand Middlesex their second defeat of the day at Lord's.
    5/17/2014 5:50:26 PM
  • That's it - @SussexCCC win by 13 runs to condemn @Middlesex_CCC to their second defeat of the day. Home side finished on 115-6.
  • You beauty! Well played lads, defending 128 was a special effort! @SussexCCC
  • [mikeatherton] Middlesex will be wondering how they lost this one. It has been a good day’s cricket in many ways – we’ve had a good crowd in and the sun has shone brightly for the most part – but the cricketing part of it has been a fairly poor day for Middlesex.

    5/17/2014 5:53:44 PM
  • Man of the Match goes to Steffan Piolet for his 2-15. Join us on Sunday for @SomersetCCC v @surreycricket from 2pm on SS2. @NatWestT20Blast
  • [andrewstrauss] Middlesex’s bowling was much better in the second game but their batting was shocking. To not be able to chase 128 no matter what sort of wicket you’re batting on isn’t good enough and they’ll go home very disappointed. Sussex are always hard to beat because they’ve got good, experienced cricketers. Although we thought Sussex were out of the game at the halfway mark, I think they thought that they still had a chance and they produced some really good performances with the ball.
