NatWest T20 Blast - May 17

Middlesex take on Essex, then play Sussex in a NatWest T20 Blast double-header at Lord's.

  • Over 7: Middlesex 59/1 (Malan 39, Morgan 15)
With the fielding restrictions now relaxed, Bopara is into the attack to bowl some medium pace. Just ones and twos during an over costing six runs.
    5/17/2014 11:28:56 AM
  • Nass is loading up with what appears to be Lord's finest leek and potato soup before his comms stint and some chicken sarnies... "Soup is nice and hot - although I'm not sure what it is". That hasn't prevented him finishing it off before a photo could be taken. Paul Allott has described it as "a ubiquitous cricket soup" and is off in search of his own serving.
    5/17/2014 11:31:51 AM
  • The remnants of Nasser's soup...

    5/17/2014 11:32:40 AM
  • [6]Over 8: Middlesex 71/1 (Malan 40, Morgan 26)
Off-spinner Greg Smith into the attack. Morgan takes advantage of the short boundary on one side by slog sweeping for six and, later in the over, lofts over extra cover for four more. That brings up the 50 partnership from 32 balls.
    5/17/2014 11:32:56 AM
  • Over 9: Middlesex 78/1 (Malan 42, Morgan 31)
Bopara's run up is getting shorter and shorter as his spell progresses. Morgan gives himself some room and drives through the covers for four. Very quick scoring conditions at Lord's today, that raced away.
    5/17/2014 11:35:20 AM
  • Over 10: Middlesex 80/1 (Malan 43, Morgan 32)
Jesse Ryder, another medium pacer, is on for his first bowl for Essex. Good start, stump-to-stump and mixing up his pace. Just a couple of singles in the over.
    5/17/2014 11:37:28 AM
  • Two runs from Ryder's first over for @EssexCricket . @Middlesex_CCC are 80-1 off 10 ovs. Malan 43*, Morgan 32*. @NatWestT20Blast #midvess
  • [6]Over 11: Middlesex 94/1 (Malan 45, Morgan 44)
Panesar is back on. He's trying out got a few new tricks today, including hiding the ball behind his back during his run up. Nothing much is working for him in that over. Morgan latches onto a short ball, carving it away for four and then gets down on one knee to heave a big six to the longer boundary on the leg-side.
    5/17/2014 11:41:40 AM
  • Morgan reaches his 12th fifty in 135 T20 matches from 30 balls: @Middlesex_CCC 104-1 off 12. Malan 49no off 36. @NatWestT20Blast
  • [50]Over 12: Middlesex 104/1 (Malan 49, Morgan 50)
    Morgan completes a 30-ball half-century (5x4, 3x6) with a drop-and-run single to mid-on. He'd driven Ryder for four earlier in the over to bring up Middlesex's 100.

    5/17/2014 11:45:28 AM
  • [andrewstrauss] Morgan really has timed the ball beautifully and he’ll want to go right through to the end of the innings now.”

    5/17/2014 11:47:56 AM
  • [50]Over 13: Middlesex 111/1 (Malan 50, Morgan 56)
Malan brings up a 37-ball half-century (6x4) of his own with a single off Topley. He's played a sensible hand, getting Middlesex off to a flier with some pleasing drives and now happy to turn the strike over to Morgan at every opportunity. Morgan pulls a short ball from Topley for four more later in the over.
    5/17/2014 11:48:12 AM
  • [ouch]Brief break in play as Malan recovers from jamming the ball into his own ankle from the last ball of Topley's previous over.
    5/17/2014 11:48:50 AM
  • [6]Over 14: Middlesex 131/1 (Malan 51, Morgan 75)
Morgan is on the charge and Ryder is the latest bowler on the receiving end. The England left-hander hits three fours and a six in an over costing  20 runs in total. The six was smashed to midwicket after Ryder missed with a yorker and the last of the fours almost decapitated umpire Richard Illingworth!
    5/17/2014 11:52:15 AM
  • Over 15: Middlesex 139/1 (Malan 57, Morgan 77)
Bopara continues with his stump-to-stump offerings off a shortened run. Malan finds the boundary - his seventh four - in an otherwise quiet over.
    5/17/2014 11:54:33 AM
  • [wicket]Morgan c Newby b Napier 77

Morgan holes out to Newby at long-on, giving Napier the breakthrough and ending the left-hander's 43-ball innings (9x4, 4x6). Didn't quite get hold of it, too much loft and not enough distance.
    5/17/2014 11:55:45 AM
  • First time watching a @Middlesex_CCC match at Lord's without playing, since before I turned professional.
  • Over 16: Middlesex 153/2 (Malan 71, Denly 0)
Essex getting a bit scruffy in the field, donating an overthrow to the Middlesex cause. Malan follows Morgan's dismissal with a couple of fours. Joe Denly is the new batsman.
    5/17/2014 11:58:59 AM
  • Our Isa has caught up with Eoin Morgan, who looks pretty content with life at present, saying...

“I really enjoyed myself. Once we got going we put them under a lot of pressure. If we got up to the late 190s that would be a great finish. I’m really happy [with my form].

    5/17/2014 12:00:19 PM
  • Over 17: Middlesex 160/2 (Malan 72, Denly 5)
Denly gets going with a couple of singles off Bopara and then squirts a drive away from three from the final ball of the over. In between, Malan missed out on a short ball, pulling it into his pads and away for a leg-bye. Bopara finished with figures of 4-0-27-0.

    5/17/2014 12:03:41 PM
  • [wicket]Denly b Topley 6

Denly is bowled aiming across the line. He had twice played and missed with similar strokes earlier in the over.
    5/17/2014 12:06:12 PM
  • [wicket]Christian b Topley 0

Action replay as new batsman Dan Christian is bowled first ball aiming into the leg-side.
    5/17/2014 12:07:32 PM
  • Over 18: Middlesex 162/4 (Malan 73, Balbernie 0)
Two singles and two wickets from Topley's over. Essex will take that!
    5/17/2014 12:08:29 PM
  • Malan's (73no) chances of scoring the 50th domestic T20 centurion since T20 began in this country are fading fast...

[benedictbermange] Forty nine centuries have been scored, but only one player has reached three figures on three separate occasions. Ian Harvey scored 100no for Gloucestershire against Warwickshire in 2003, 108no for Yorkshire against Lancashire in 2004 and 109 for Yorkshire against Derbyshire in 2005."

    5/17/2014 12:08:50 PM
  • [6]Over 19: Middlesex 174/4 (Malan 83, Balbernie 1)
Andy Balbernie is the new batsman. He's an Irish right-hander, 23, playing in his first T20 game for Middlesex today.  Napier goes into yorker mode and keeps it to ones and twos until the final ball, which is sent sailing over square-leg for six by Malan.
    5/17/2014 12:12:21 PM
  • [wicket]Balbernie c Foster b Topley 2

Balbernie gloves a slower-ball bouncer through to wicketkeeper Foster. He was through the shot too early.
    5/17/2014 12:16:02 PM
  • [michaelatherton] Ever since Morgan got out the WASP predicted score has come down and down and down. It has been an impressive fightback from Topley and Essex.

    5/17/2014 12:16:42 PM
  • [end-of-innings]Over 20: Middlesex 180/5 (Malan 86, Simpson 2)
Topley keeps it to ones and twos in the final over - plus the wicket of Balbernie - to finish with figures of 4-0-26-3.

    5/17/2014 12:17:22 PM
  • .@Middlesex_CCC post 180-5 as Malan finishes 86no. Run-rate 9.00. "It's a tough ask but @EssexCricket have got a chance," says @Athersmike
  • Malan: “We have to take wickets early on. I think it’s a very, very good wicket. The way we were going we were probably aiming for about 200 when Morgs was smashing it so we’re a little bit disappointed not to get there.

    5/17/2014 12:24:18 PM
  • Great knock from @dmalan29 gets him a @SkyCricket interview here @homeOfCricket as the Panthers post 180 v Essex

  • @ajj30 : @finnysteve do u think the 180 is enough finny.” Should Be. Especially if we take early wickets
  • Only once has a side score more than 170 to win a domestic T20 match at Lord's, reports Paul Allott - so that should give Middlesex some peace of mind. Pettini to take first ball. His batting index is 153, while Cook's is 162. WASP gives Essex a 40 per cent chance of winning.

  • Cricket Index explained...

    5/17/2014 12:29:17 PM
  • [6]Over 1: Essex 13/0 (Pettini 13, Cook 1)
Middlesex also go for the spin-first tactic. Ollie Rayner takes the first over. Pettini's off the mark with a five! He scampers through for a sharp single and Middlesex take a shy at the stumps, only to see it race away to the boundary after deflecting off Rayner's fingers. Cook opens his account with a single and Pettini heaves a top-edged slog for six to midwicket. Short boundary and he took advantage. Essex need 168 off 114 balls.
    5/17/2014 12:31:50 PM
  • Jesse Ryder (left) in good spirits waiting to bat...

    5/17/2014 12:33:32 PM
  • Over 2: Essex 23/0 (Pettini 22, Cook 1)
Aussie import Christian's having a shocking debut for Middlesex; following his first-ball duck with an over costing 10 runs. Pettini cracks the first delivery, which was short and wide, for four through backward point and adds four more on the leg-side later in the over. Essex need 158 off 108 balls.
    5/17/2014 12:35:12 PM
  • Middlesex Panthers '@SkyCricket 'insider' @dmalan29 get mic'ed up ahead of the Essex innings #PanthersRoar

  • Over 3: Essex 32/0 (Pettini 26, Cook 6)
Cook flicks James Harris' opening delivery off his hip for four. Pettini has a few wild swings and misses but does manage to lift Harris' final ball back over the bowler's head for four. Essex need 149 off 102 balls.
    5/17/2014 12:39:30 PM
  • [nasserhussain] In general Essex are bowling too short and are getting hit both sides of the wicket and now WASP has them as firm favourites to win. Pettini and Cook have turned this around.

    5/17/2014 12:42:30 PM
  • Over 4: Essex 40/0 (Pettini 22, Cook 1)
Toby Roland-Jones is the fourth bowler to be tried already by Middlesex skipper Morgan. Pettini pulls a short ball for four, finishing with one leg off the ground a la Gordon Greenidge. Essex need 143 off 96 balls.
    5/17/2014 12:44:04 PM
  • Over 5: Essex 54/0 (Pettini 40, Cook 14)
Pettini drives Harris back over his head once again for four more but is then fortunate as a leading edge drops safely between converging fielders. Cook hasn't seen a lot of the strike early on but gets involved by clearing mid-off for his first four and Pettini finishes off the over with another four, this time driven over extra cover. Essex need 127 off 90 balls.
    5/17/2014 12:47:48 PM
  • .@EssexCricket cruising at 71-0 off six. Pettini (56no) reached his 50 off 23 balls. #midvess @natwestt20blast 110 needed off 84 balls
