NatWest T20 Blast - May 17

Middlesex take on Essex, then play Sussex in a NatWest T20 Blast double-header at Lord's.

  • [50]Over 6: Essex 71/0 (Pettini 56, Cook 14)
Three fours in a row off Roland-Jones takes Essex's stand-in skipper Pettini to a 23-ball half-century (9x4, 1x6). Middlesex have no answer to this. Pettini gives himself some room and makes it four fours on the spin with a square drive. Essex need 110 runs off 84 balls.

  • Over 7: Essex 77/0 (Pettini 58, Cook 19)
Respite for Middlesex at last as, with the fielding restrictions relaxed, left-arm spinner Ravi Patel is able to get through an over without conceding a boundary. Essex need 104 off 78 balls.
    5/17/2014 12:58:23 PM
  • Over 8: Essex 79/0 (Pettini 58, Cook 20)
The spinners have put the brakes on Essex's openers in the last two overs. Rayner varies his flight nicely and limits it to just two singles in the over. Essex need 102 off 72 balls.
    5/17/2014 12:59:40 PM
  • [wicket]Cook c Morgan b Patel 22

Cook pulls straight to Morgan at midwicket. He didn't get hold of it at all. The England captain's dismissal ends an opening stand of 81 from 50 balls.

  • Cook's exit brings Ryder to the middle...
    5/17/2014 1:00:41 PM
  • Over 9: Essex 82/1 (Pettini 59, Ryder 1)
Quiet start from Ryder, taking a look at a couple of deliveries before pushing a single off the back foot to get off the mark. Middlesex's spinners have put the squeeze on just when Essex looked to be turning the run chase into a formality. Essex need 98 off 64 balls.
    5/17/2014 1:04:12 PM
  • Over 10: Essex 89/1 (Pettini 61, Ryder 5)
Ryder lofts a pleasant drive over extra cover for a couple but otherwise Rayner keeps it down to singles, plus a wide down the leg-side. Essex need 91 off 60 balls.
    5/17/2014 1:07:04 PM
  • Over 11: Essex 98/1 (Pettini 67, Ryder 7)
Pettini gives himself some room and drives over extra cover for his 11th four (and one six). Otherwise it's just singles off Patel. Essex need 83 off 54 balls.

  • [6]Over 12: Essex 106/1 (Pettini 73, Ryder 9)
Stirling on to bowl some spin now. Pettini fetches a sweep from outside off-stump and gets it fine enough to run away for four. Essex need 75 off 48 balls.
    5/17/2014 1:15:12 PM
  • [wicket]Ryder c Roland-Jones b Patel 15

Ryder holes out to deep extra cover a couple of balls after slog-sweeping Patel the other way to the shorter boundary for six.
    5/17/2014 1:15:28 PM
  • [mikeatherton] That’s a much-needed wicket for Middlesex. The spinners are just bringing their team back into this game.

    5/17/2014 1:16:43 PM
  • [6]Over 13: Essex 114/2 (Pettini 74, Bopara 1)
Patel completes figures of 4-0-26-2, gaining his revenge on Ryder after the first ball of the over went the distance. Essex need 67 off 42 balls.

    5/17/2014 1:17:21 PM
  • Over 14: Essex 120/2 (Pettini 74, Bopara 7)
Bopara finds the boundary for the first time in a Stirling over costing seven runs.  This looks like it is going to go right to the wire. Essex need 60 off 36 balls.
    5/17/2014 1:20:19 PM
  • Over 15: Essex 129/2 (Pettini 78, Bopara 10)
Middlesex go back to seam for the first time since the powerplay in the shape of Christian. Essex happy to take ones and twos, plus a wide, in an over costing eight runs. Essex need 52 off 30 balls.

  • Over 16: Essex 138/2 (Pettini 84, Bopara 13)
Rayner finishes off his allocation for figures of 4-0-30-0. Pettini nails a sweep for four to square-leg, prompting a change in the field, which saves some runs when he tries to repeat the dose. Essex need 43 off 24 balls.

  • Fancy @SussexCCC to go back to back today, wicket should suit our balanced side and fancy Essex to win and tire them out also.Come on sharks
  • Over 17: Essex 149/2 (Pettini 89, Bopara 19)
Christian's slower ball is slapped to the midwicket boundary by Bopara, wasn't out of the middle but split the fielders back on the leg-side fence. Pettini has to put in the full-length dive to make his ground after coming back for two from the final ball to make it 11 runs from the over. Essex need 32 off 18 balls.
    5/17/2014 1:29:47 PM
  • [6]Over 18: Essex 160/2 (Pettini 91, Bopara 28)
Singles from the first four balls of Roland-Jones' over leave Essex badly in need of a boundary... Bopara sends the next one high and handsome to midwicket for six. Roland-Jones missed his length with the attempted yorker. Bopara keeps the strike with a single from the final delivery. Essex need 28 off 12 balls.

  • [6]Over 19: Essex 181/2 (Pettini 95, Bopara 45)
Bopara walks across his stumps and hits the first ball of the penultimate over from Harris for six to midwicket - only just though, Balbernie palming it over the rope. Bopara follows up with four slightly squarer on the leg-side and then six more, this time easily clearing straight midwicket. Pettini finishes off the game with seven balls to spare, cutting fine for four. Essex win by eight wickets.

  • Cracking first game at Lords !
  • And say so all of us, Bumble! So an important team meeting coming up for Middlesex - not just for this upcoming match against Sussex but in the context of the Championship clash against Northamptonshire, which begins tomorrow.

  • Best us of the word 'muffins' (so far) from Ravi Bopara, looking ahead to teaming up with the England squad prior to Tuesday's T20 clash against Sri Lanka...

The boys are really looking forward to it.
We’ve worked really hard over the last month or so since we’ve been back. I’ve been doing a lot of white-ball cricket training; it’s important you do that in between the Championship matches so that if you do get a low score instead of sitting upstairs eating muffins, you go and practice with the white ball and get some skills done.

  • [andrewstrauss] I think we saw two very mature innings from Pettini and Bopara. Pettini talked about the necessity of getting Essex off to a good start and he did that brilliantly. He targeted the short boundary consistently. It just showed what a good wicket this is because everything was coming off the middle of the bat. The great thing was that he saw them home all of the way through the innings to score his highest score in Twenty20 cricket.

  • Luke Wright on his England future

Talking to the selectors, certainly the door doesn’t seem closed. I hope not. I feel like I’ve had four bad games - three in Australia and one in West Indies – and I didn’t get the chance to put it right in the World Cup. I’ve played well in all different formats around the world and I’ve put in some good performances in Twenty20 cricket. I certainly think I’ve got something to offer to the England side. But there are a lot of good players out there so I’ve got to go out there and show to Peter Moores and the selectors that I’m good enough to get back in.

  • What a great way to start off our @NatWestT20Blast campaign with a great win. #UpUpEagles
  • Here come the players for the second-part of our double-header... Dan Christian to open up from the Nursery End. The WASP Par Score has gone up to 180 due to the pitch and the small boundary square.

  • [wicket]Wright b Christian 1

Christian salvages an otherwise horrible opening over by yorking Wright with the final ball. Wright played over the top of it.
