NatWest T20 Blast Finals Day - August 23

  • Over 14 - Bears 111-2 (Porterfield 20, Clarke 25)
"Batty seems to have been playing for years," muses Vaughan as the spinner rattles through his final over to finish with 1-24 from his four overs. An excellent spell and even better reaction catch to send back Chopra, followed up by some celebratory football skills....
    8/23/2014 10:53:21 AM
  • Batty boots the ball in celebration of Chopra's wicket

    8/23/2014 10:54:17 AM
  • Over 15 - Bears 129-2 (Porterfield 37, Clarke 26)
Porterfield is teeing off now, much to Bumble's delight. He creams Dunn for successive sixes, over deep square leg and then extra cover, before tickling a full delivery past fine leg for four more. Clarke attempts to add insult to injury by reverse sweeping Dunn and he gets lucky as Batty, diving to his left, can't quite pull off his second stunning catch of the day.
    8/23/2014 10:57:45 AM
  • Clarke c O'Brien b Peterson 35 [wicket]

Peterson drags the ball down and Clarke, aiming big down the ground, can only pick out O'Brien
    8/23/2014 11:01:07 AM
  • Over 16 - Bears 139-3 (Porterfield 38, Evans 0)
Clarke's exit comes swiftly after the shot of the day so far as he advances and check drives Peterson over extra cover for six. Mahmood back into the attack...
    8/23/2014 11:03:00 AM
  • Evans b Mahmood 2 [wicket]

Nick's catwalk partner gets too far over, exposes his leg stump and is castled.
    8/23/2014 11:06:11 AM
  • Over 17 - Bears 146-4 (Portefield 42, Woakes 0)
With Surrey's fielding standards slipping - Mahmood decides to take matters into his own hands . Peterson, who can't hold a diving chance to his left offered by Porterfield, the latest guilty party.
    8/23/2014 11:08:17 AM
  • Fifty for Porterfield, off 37 balls with three sixes and two fours:… #FinalsDay
  • Edgbaston looking good. Thanks for all your messages. Haaammppshiiirreeee

  • Over 18 - Bears 157-4 (Porterfield 51, Woakes 2)
Healthy pace to Porterfield's innings, not least against Dernbach whose third over goes for 11 runs - the highlight a beaut of a six simply flicked effortlessly over square leg.
    8/23/2014 11:10:40 AM
  • Over 19 - Bears 175-4 (Porterfield 67, Woakes 3)
Porterfield - who was on 20 off 26 balls - powers the first ball of Mahmood's new over through extra cover for four but there's better to come as he changes his grip and hands to plunder four more with a cute reverse paddle over third man and a huge six over midwicket. 18 runs off that over. Ouch! 200 on the cards?
    8/23/2014 11:15:07 AM
  • [end-of-innings] Birmingham Bears 194-4 (Porterfield 81no)
Woakes plunders four more off the first ball of the final over then hands the baton over to Porterfield to sign off in style, which he does with a wristy flick through midwicket for four and a heave over midwicket for six. Seems he's pretty handy at despatching the full toss - but Surrey haven't picked up on that for some unfathomable reason... A scrambled two means 19 runs have come off the final over.
    8/23/2014 11:19:10 AM
  • [nickknight] The batting has at times been irresistible from the Birmingham Bears - and what an innings from Porterfield. Surrey were the bookies favourites coming into this first semi-final but they've got their work cut out now."

    8/23/2014 11:20:39 AM
  • Surrey will have to go some to get this after Bears post 194-4 off their 20 overs, Porterfield 81no:… #FinalsDay
  • Man of the moment Porterfield - 81no off 47 balls

    8/23/2014 11:30:26 AM
  • Over 1 - Surrey 13-0 (Roy 11, Davies 0)
Not the best of starts from Clarke, who piles into the stumps at the non-striker's end to open up with a no-ball. Porterfield pounces at backward point to deny Roy an early chance to get off the mark but it doesn't remain that way for long. Roy swinging from the hip to power a short delivery into the crowd. Surrey hearts in mouths as Roy clips Clarke just wide of Patel at straight-ish midwicket.
    8/23/2014 11:34:35 AM
  • Over 2 - Surrey 16-0 (Roy 13, Davies 1)
Woakes straight into his stride, bowling in the high eighties and Roy risks a single off the first ball of the over. Direct hit and he might have been struggling. Davies takes a look at a couple and then gets off to the mark with a single down to third man. The early morning sunshine has gone and worryingly the ground staff have cleared the advertising boards in front of the covers... No immediate danger, though, it would appear.
    8/23/2014 11:40:19 AM
  • Over 3 - Surrey 42-0 (Roy 39, Davies 1)
"Game on," says Nass, and he's not wrong. Roy picks Clarke's slower ball and helps himself to four over mid-off, before launching a six high and handsome over the covers to the short boundary. Clarke loses his line and the Surrey showman helps himself to four to fine leg, then another couple of boundaries through the covers - the first on the ground, the second aerial. But there's more. The final ball disappears over the ring for four and that's 26 OFF THE OVER.
    8/23/2014 11:44:04 AM
  • Over 4 - Surrey 55-0 (Roy 43, Davies 10)
Davies a little belatedly joins the party and after struggling to one off seven balls, helps himself to consecutive fours through the off-side. Not one short ball and not one yorker yet, observes Nass, a point Athers has been making for a little while now. Roy only has to face one ball of the over and he makes the most of it - smashing Woakes for another boundary. Here comes Rankin...
    8/23/2014 11:48:10 AM
  • Can we have the ball back?

    8/23/2014 11:50:25 AM
  • Fifty for Roy off just 19 balls. Nine fours, two sixes. "He's living up to the hype," says Strauss:… #FinalsDay
  • Over 5 - Surrey 64-0 (Roy 51, Davies 11)
What an innings this is from Roy. Rankin refuses to test the lid and Roy takes advantage, driving through the off-side for four and then reaching his fifty with an inside edge to the fine leg rope. Fortune favours the brave. Time for some spin...
    8/23/2014 11:53:35 AM
  • Over 6 - Surrey 78-0 (Roy 56, Davies 19)
Jeetan Patel, such a star for the Bears this season with 23 wickets in the competition, can't turn the tide. Davies - determined for a share of the limelight - picks up consecutive fours at the start of the over and Roy - you've guessed it - flicks four more past extra cover. That's the powerplay done, much to the Bears' relief.
    8/23/2014 11:56:40 AM
  • Over 7 - Surrey 88-0 (Roy 58, Davies 27)
Davies despatches Rankin high over deep square leg who, just for a second, was interested in what looked like a possible steepling chance - only for the ball to sail high over his head. Rankin appears to have got the Surrey memo about bowling full tosses and concedes 10 off the over.
    8/23/2014 11:59:08 AM
  • Roy c Woakes b Patel 58 [wicket]

What a breakthrough. Roy attempts to sweep but rather cue ends it and Woakes pouches a simple catch behind square a few yards in from the rope.
    8/23/2014 12:01:58 PM
  • Over 8 - Surrey 92-1 (Davies 30, Pietersen 1)
Not for the first time this season, Jeetan Patel comes to the Bears rescue to end a scintillating innings from Roy. Will we see him again today? The answer to that question could well be down to Pietersen, who gets a rather mixed reception walking to the wicket...
    8/23/2014 12:03:33 PM
  • Jason Roy - rather cut off in his prime

    8/23/2014 12:05:07 PM
  • Over 9 - Surrey 96-1 (Davies 31, Pietersen 3)
Rankin has rather regathered and he digs in a couple of shorter deliveries to Pietersen who survives a strong Bears lbw decision that looked like it was just sliding down the leg-side. As WASP suggests, this match is right in the balance...
    8/23/2014 12:07:41 PM
  • Over 10 - Surrey 104-1 (Davies 31, Pietersen 11)
Hearty applause for Flintoff as he makes his way around the boundary for a few warm-ups with Lancashire. He rather draws attention away from six more for Pietersen, although there's a suspicion Porterfield might have done a touch better with his effort on the boundary. He rather palmed it over. That may be a touch harsh, to be fair, but standards are so high these days...
    8/23/2014 12:10:52 PM
  • Over 11 - Surrey 108-1 (Davies 33, Pietersen 13)
Surrey are rather losing momentum as Rankin finds his range to finish with 0-26 off his four overs. He rather snatches his cap from the umpire in frustration at not getting a wicket but in the context of the game, his run-rate is just what's required.
    8/23/2014 12:14:36 PM
  • Pietersen c&b Javid 13 [wicket]

Smart catch, was that, as Pietersen drilled the spinner's first ball straight back at him but Javid took the chance two-handed.
    8/23/2014 12:15:57 PM
  • Over 12 - Surrey 112-2 (Davies 35, Wilson 2)
Javid, to be fair, did well to hold onto that because it was hit pretty hard. Took it fingers pointing up. He also did well to avoid the stumps at the non-striker's end as he wheeled off in celebration. That could have been calamitous. Four singles off the over - plus the wicket - equals job done (for now).
    8/23/2014 12:18:17 PM
  • Over 13 - Surrey 116-2 (Davies 37, Wilson 4)
Wilson is cutting a rather frustrated figure as he and Davies struggle to get Hannon-Dalby away, the seamer mixing his pace up well. Surrey need 79 more off 42 balls.
    8/23/2014 12:22:51 PM
  • Wilson c Chopra b Javid 4 [wicket]

The skipper falls as he walks down the track and aims to leg only to spoon a simple catch via the leading edge.

    8/23/2014 12:24:20 PM
  • Over 14 - Surrey 117-3 (Davies 38, O'Brien 0)
What a bowling change this has been. Javid is in his element now and has O'Brien tied up in knots, so much so that the batsman flicks his bat up in the air in frustration. Javid now has 2-5 off two overs.
    8/23/2014 12:26:41 PM
  • Davies run out 39 [wicket]

Calamitous running by O'Brien and Davies who is short by a yard attempting to sneak an extra run
    8/23/2014 12:29:51 PM
  • Over 15 - Surrey 126-4 (O'Brien 3, Mahmood 5)
Disaster for Surrey as Davies goes. He and O'Brien had already run two into the leg-side but then attempted to steal another as the throw hits the non-striker's end and cannons away. It was never there, though, and Clarke quickly spots Davies is struggling and fires the ball to the 'keeper's end. Surrey need 69 off 30 balls.
    8/23/2014 12:32:49 PM
  • Over 16 - Surrey 134-4 (O'Brien 5, Mahmood 11)
Ambrose in a heap of pain as O'Brien advances and gets a tickle behind, the ball diverting onto one of the 'keeper's digits and seemingly dislocating it. The physio is on quickly and appears to yank said finger back into place. Not the time, probably, to mention the missed catch and stumping opportunity. Ambrose is fine to continue. Mahmood steps back and cuts for four as the skies get ever darker.
    8/23/2014 12:38:54 PM
  • Over 17 - Surrey 144-4 (O'Brien 10, Mahmood 15)
O'Brien breaks the shackles a little, mowing Hannon-Dalby through midwicket for four and Mahmood is fortunate to survive a possible run out chance when the throw in from the deep cannons off his bat and away to safety when he seemed well beaten. Woakes returns...
    8/23/2014 12:43:27 PM
  • O'Brien run out (Porterfield) [wicket]

Porterfield the star again as his long-range throw catches O'Brien well out of his ground
    8/23/2014 12:47:41 PM
  • Mahmood b Woakes 16 [wicket]

Surrey folding here as Mahmood steps across his stumps and is cleaned out by a full delivery
    8/23/2014 12:48:57 PM
  • Over 18 - Surrey (Peterson 0, Ansari 1)
The Bears are bossing this and loving it to boot. O'Brien didn't get the dive out but it might not have made that much difference, Woakes doing well not to intercept the ball at the non-striker's end and allow it to hit the stumps directly. Mahmood was aiming to tickle the ball down to fine leg but showed Woakes too much of his leg stump and paid the price.
    8/23/2014 12:51:23 PM
  • Javid celebrates dismissing Kevin Pietersen

    8/23/2014 12:52:29 PM
  • Over 19 - Surrey 164-6 (Peterson 13, Ansari 3)
Peterson powers Hannon-Dalby back down the ground for six but it's too little too late as Surrey need 31 off six balls. The Bears have just about got their overs in with bonus time allowed for stoppages and injuries.
