Valentino Rossi made a welcome return to the top of the timesheets as he edged out Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo in practice for Sunday's Catalan Grand Prix.
The Italian, a seven-time world champion in the top class, has not won a race since the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix, and just two weeks ago suffered the indignity of tumbling out of his home race on the opening lap.
But the 34-year-old showed some of the old magic remains as his late fast lap of one minute 42.297 seconds jumped him from the middle of the pack to the top of the standings.

Salford owner Marwan Koukash claims his club are being "victimised" by the Rugby Football League after having two points deducted for having 14 players on the field during a win over Castleford.
The Reds were today stripped of the points they gained from their 34-30 victory over the Tigers on April 27 after a mix-up involving the fourth official resulted in them having an extra man on the pitch at a crucial time in the game.
I may be wrong, but previously the only time a club has been deducted points was for breaching the salary cap. I feel we are being victimised. A mistake was made in the heat of the moment, with only a few minutes to go in the match.

British number three Johanna Konta has been given a wildcard entry to next week's Aegon International at Eastbourne, as too has former US Open champion Sam Stosur.
I'm very privileged and thrilled to have received a wild card into the Aegon International. Eastbourne is my home and my local tournament so I hope to do the wild card justice. It's going to be great experience for me to play in the main draw at Devonshire Park for the first time.
