Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher will join the Sky Sports punditry team for the 2013/14 season. The 35-year-old, who will retire from playing at the end of the current campaign, will work alongside the likes of Gary Neville, Graeme Souness, Jamie Redknapp and Alan Smith next term when Sky Sports brings you over 500 matches from the domestic, European and international games.
I watch Sky Sports all the time and I'm a huge fan. I can't wait to be part of their coverage and work with the best in the business. What Sky has done for football for over 20 years is incredible and I'm thrilled to be part of their exciting plans for next season. I don't think there could be a better move for me: to retire from one of the world's best football clubs at the end of the season and then join one of the world's best broadcasters. Until that time comes, I'll remain fully focussed on my remaining playing career with Liverpool and I'm looking forward to ending the season with good results.

Time for some morning updates from the American sports world, as the NBA play-offs continue Stateside. The Brooklyn Nets beat Chicago Bulls to keep their Eastern Conference series alive. West Ham centre-half Winston Reid has signed a new contract with the club until summer 2015. The New Zealand international has become a regular at the heart of the Hammers' defence alongside James Collins in the past two seasons.
I've really enjoyed being here. It's a good club and we've done really well over the last couple of years. Now, I'm looking forward to the next two years. I think I have played some good football over the last two years but that goes for the whole team as well. Hopefully we can continue that. Of course we now plan to build on the last two seasons.

In case you missed Aston Villa's 6-1 destruction of Sunderland last night, we've got all the reaction you need. You can check out the match report, and the chance to review the ratings, after Christian Benteke's hat-trick boosted Villa's survival hopes. The Belgian striker was then labelled 'world class' by his manager Paul Lambert after the game. But for Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio, the result was a 'humiliation', while the club will also appeal Stephane Sessegnon's red card. You can also check out our gallery with some of the best pictures from the match.

[stuartbarnes] Stuart Barnes is at the Lions announcement hotel and says Warren Gatland has a tough task picking his team for Australia.
I sat behind Warren on the plane from Montpellier and he was saying that his mind was far from clear, it was difficult, which is a slight worry for the Lions because there’s not a lot of players that have been screaming their name forward saying they must be included.
Barnes also thinks Jonny Wilkinson should be on the plane for Australia after his exploits with Toulon.
Sexton is the Lions Test starter there’s no question about that, but when he comes off as players tend to do, who do you want to come on. Wilkinson has been in tremendous form and his kicking has been rock solid under the most intense of pressure. Wilkinson’s weaknesses are also Owen Farrell’s weakness so out of the English duo I’d pick Wilkinson. Will he go? I’m not so sure, should he go? Absolutely.

    4/30/2013 8:35:47 AM

[garyneville] Gary Neville says Aston Villa's hat-trick hero against Sunderland, Christian Benteke, has been an "absolute saviour" for Paul Lambert's men this season.
At 22 years of age, to do what he has done in his first season in the Premier League, is an outstanding achievement.
    4/30/2013 8:38:28 AM

Tony Fernandes has launched a scathing attack on Queens Park Rangers players who have taken his money but have failed to keep the club in the Premier League. Fernandes has bit his tongue all year about the team's poor performances, but let rip at the players who he thinks have let the club down badly after relegation was confirmed by Sunday's 0-0 draw at Reading.
It was probably the low point for me when I saw the reaction of some of the players. It has shocked me because it is something that is alien to me. Whatever I have done as a job, for whoever has hired me, I put in 150 per cent. It's in my character. If I am taking someone else's money, then I am going to work bloody hard for that person. It's an alien concept to me that someone takes someone's salary, doesn't put 100 per cent in, thinks: 'Oh, we lost. No big deal. What club are we going to tonight?' That is an alien concept to me. It wasn't right to say anything during the season, but I noticed everything and I am a little bit wiser for it now.

Here's more on the report from FIFA's ethics committee into the scandal involving collapsed marketing partners ISL which named Joao Havelange and two former executive committee members Ricardo Teixeira and Nicolas Leoz as receiving bribes. All three have since resigned from FIFA. The report by FIFA Adjudicatory Chamber chairman Hans-Joachim Eckert also calls current FIFA president Sepp Blatter's handling of the scandal "clumsy" but says it did not breach ethics rules. Blatter immediately issued a statement welcoming that he had been cleared of misconduct.
I also note with satisfaction that this report confirms that 'President Blatter's conduct could not be classified in any way as misconduct with regard to any ethics rules'. I have no doubt that FIFA, thanks to the governance reform process that I proposed, now has the mechanisms and means to ensure that such an issue - which has caused untold damage to the reputation of our institution - does not happen again.
    4/30/2013 8:58:34 AM

There's a big game in the Championship tonight when London rivals Millwall and Crystal Palace meet at The Den. A win for Millwall would ensure that Kenny Jackett's side are playing Championship football next season. Palace also need the points, though, and know victory will guarantee Ian Holloway's side a place in the play-offs.

Daniel Routledge says Leicester are one of the great defensive teams in BBL history. But are they the best?

If you'd asked me about the great defensive teams in BBL history last summer, first in my mind would be Sheffield in the mid-90s and the recent Newcastle teams.

And here's some more from the ethics report by FIFA, which does not state the total sum of bribes paid but says they took place over eight years between 1992 and May 2000.
From money that passed through the ISMM/ISL Group, it is certain that not inconsiderable amounts were channelled to former FIFA President Havelange and to his son-in-law Ricardo Teixeira as well as to Dr. Nicolas Leoz, whereby there is no indication that any form of service was given in return by them. These payments were apparently made via front companies in order to cover up the true recipient and are to be qualified as 'commissions', known today as 'bribes'.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he has plans in place to improve his Manchester United squad in the summer. Despite not having the spending power enjoyed by the likes of Manchester City or Chelsea, Ferguson is confident that United can be competitive in the summer transfer window.
Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need. We're competitive in the market - we're not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we're competitive. We've been doing a bit of work on that over the last three or four months, targeting who the players are that we feel could enhance us, make us better or help us maintain the level we're at.

  • [bn] Sam Warburton will captain the Lions in Australia, no place for Jonny Wilkinson or Chris Robshaw in the squad
    4/30/2013 10:14:43 AM

Wales' Sam Warburton has labelled it 'unbelievable' to be named British & Irish Lions captain for this summer's tour to Australia.
Warren gave me a call a week ago Sunday, so it's been nine or ten days since I found out. It's been the hardest thing I've had to keep a secret. It was unbelievable. It's an accolade which very, very few people are able to achieve. To be able to have the opportunity to do this is unbelievable.

[stuartbarnes] Stuart can't believe Jonny WIlkinson was left out of the squad by Warren Gatland if he made himself available for the trip.
I find it mystifying to be honest as your second fly-half comes on to close the game out, and there's none better at doing that than Wilkinson. He has his weaknesses but who else would you want coming on for the final 10 minutes with the game level.

For my rugby career this is amazing, four years ago watching the tour I’d just won my first cap for Wales so now to be captaining them on the next tour is unbelievable. With Christian Benteke adding a couple of million to his price tag after a well-taken treble on Monday night, John Nicholson wonders just how the Premier League's top clubs failed to spot the Belgian's obvious potential in the first place.
