Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been named as Australia vice-captain for the upcoming Ashes series tour to England. Haddin replaces Shane Watson, who stepped down as Michael Clarke's deputy after the troubled tour on India. Seamers James Faulkner and Ryan Harris and 35-year-old batsman Chris Rogers have also been included.
Speaking about Haddin's recall, Australia selector John Inverarity said:
We feel it's important to have a senior, seasoned player support Michael at this time. When Shane Watson advised of his decision to stand down, the NSP (national selection panel) viewed Brad as the exceptional candidate to step into this leadership void.

Saracens scrum-half Ben Spencer claims the club have learned from their 2012 Heineken Cup loss to Clermont. Saracens face Toulon at Twickenham on Sunday (live on Sky Sports 2 HD) for a place in the final - and Spencer insists past experiences will stand the club in good stead.
When we look back at last year we were good through in the group stages and then came up against Clermont in the last eight in front of a big crowd at Vicarage Road but we came unstuck. The club and players have learned from this. It is a difficult step up, so it is a big week as we know we will have to put the work in and train twice as hard.

With Luis Suarez today set to find out his punishment for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the club are right to stick by the striker. Carragher cites examples - including himself, Graeme Souness, Robbie Fowler and Jan Molby - of players who Liverpool had backed to their benefit following various misdemeanours and told the Daily Mail:
The way things are now being pitched is that Liverpool have got to do something about the rotten apple in their midst. It is as if Luis is the only player to have represented Liverpool who has ever been embroiled in controversy. That simply isn't the case. Every one of the players I mention regretted what happened and Luis is the same. More importantly, the club stood by every one of them.

[ssn]Former captain Steve Waugh is tipping Australia to win the Ashes this summer despite their recent troubles.
I can't see any reason why we can't win the series. I believe we can win although a lot of people don't believe we can. If we can get off to a good start, I am expecting us to do really well and I'll go for 2-1 Australia's way.
Australia have named Brad Haddin as vice-captain, as well as calling up James Faulkner, Ryan Harris and Chris Rogers for the trip to England - and Waugh is pleased with the make up of the squad.
It is good that Brad Haddin is back in the mix as vice-captain. I think that adds solidarity to the team. Chris Rogers is an interesting selection but he gives us some depth in the batting. I like our bowling attack and there is plenty of potential there.

Recalled Brad Haddin has been talking about his return to the Australia team as vice-captain for this summer's Ashes series and has emphasised the fundamental need for solidarity. Australia endured a miserable tour of India both on and off the field when a demoralising 4-0 series defeat was accompanied by dissension behind the scenes. Haddin told Fox News:
I know if I am playing at the best of my ability I am the number one in my position. From that point of view it has been an exciting day today: there is nothing more exciting in this game of cricket than being involved in an Ashes campaign. We've picked 16 guys now who are going to go over there and we've got one thing in mind which is to come together as a team and win. We need everyone going in the same direction and come together as a team and that is as simple as it is going to get, and the result in that is we will win the Ashes.

Bayern Munich 'destroyed' Barcelona 4-0 because their players were superior in every position, says David O'Leary.
Without a doubt [it's all over]. I don't see Bayern Munich going to the Nou Camp, being the team they are - and they are a really, really good side - and conceding five goals. I don't see Barcelona scoring five 'clear' goals either and, even if they did, I definitely think Bayern will score against Barcelona. They know that. We know Barcelona are fantastic on the ball and going forward but their weakness is at the back.

Sky Sports’ David Fulton believes Australia have a good blend of youth and experience after naming their squad for this summer’s Ashes against England in July. Fulton is backing Middlesex captain Chris Rodgers to impress against Andy Flower’s men.
Chris Rogers is the interesting one for me. I think a belated selection, a great selection. He averages 50. He’s scored over 19,000 runs. It’s an interesting selection. It’s a selection for now. They got a useful blend of youth and experience. It’s a good selection.
Meanwhile, Dominic Cork disagrees and believes the Aussies are running scared having decided to recall experienced wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, stating they are a team in decline.
I disagree with David Fulton. I actually think this is now an Australian side that is panicking. They are trying to bring back experience. Their average Test per player is only 22, so that shows even with the likes of Clarke and Watson who are solid players. They are having to go backwards to go forwards. I think it’s good news for England.

[ssn]Sky Sports News chief news reporter Bryan Swanson has brought us the state of play over Luis Suarez’s situation as the Liverpool striker waits to discover his punishment.

[bobwillis] Sky Sports’ Bob Willis has added his ten penneth on Australia's Ashes selection. He believes the selection of the inexperienced Chris Rogers highlights batting issues. Click here to see who made the Australia squad.
There’s a hint of desperation about the selection. Bringing back Haddin as vice-captain is a clear message to try and instil some experience and discipline back into the squad after the shambles which was Australia’s tour of India. Chris Rogers, who’s been a journeymen in county cricket for five or so years with Derbyshire and Middlesex, brought back after not playing Test cricket for five years shows what a problem Australia have in their batting department.
