Sri Lanka v England - First ODI

Interactive commentary of the opening one-day international, at Colombo

  • Over 16 – England 108-2 (Root 1, Moeen 60)
After Jayawardene pouched Bell to collect his 212th ODI catch, Root and Ali safely navigated the remainder of Perera’s over. Quite how the Sri Lankan seamer was not made to bowl one extra ball when he fired wide past Moeen’s leg stump is unclear, though.

    11/26/2014 3:33:22 PM
  • Over 17 – England 121-2 (Root 2, Moeen 72)
Moeen thumps Herath for successive on-side sixes. Watch out crowd! Will he carry on blasting or rein himself in as we approach the middle overs?

    11/26/2014 3:36:11 PM
  • Moeen Ali - launching it into the stands

    11/26/2014 3:36:22 PM
  • Wicket – Root c Sangakkara b Perera 2 – England 121-3
[wicket] Root gets a feather on the impressive Perera’s fifth delivery and Sangakkara does the rest.

    11/26/2014 3:39:14 PM
  • Over 18 – England 124-4 (Morgan 0, Moeen 72)
Five dots and a wicket for Perera. He and his team will be delighted with that as England welcome Eoin Morgan into the fray.

    11/26/2014 3:43:41 PM
  • Wicket – Morgan b Mendis 1- England 124-4
[wicket] Morgan, after surviving an lbw review, chops onto his stumps off the twirl of Mendis. Sri Lanka are beginning to turn the screw.

    11/26/2014 3:48:12 PM
  • A brief reprieve - Sri Lanka wasted a review against Morgan

    11/26/2014 3:48:23 PM
  • On his way - Morgan chops on.

    11/26/2014 3:48:57 PM
  • Over 19 – England 125-4  (Buttler 1, Moeen 74)
Jevan Mendis drops one out in the deep as Moeen gets a life and Ajantha Mendis’ lbw appeal on Morgan is then rejected on review with the ball having pitched outside leg. Morgan went shortly after, though, careering the ball into his poles. Jos Buttler is the next man to face the music.

    11/26/2014 3:50:43 PM
  • Over 20 – England 130-4  (Buttler 2, Moeen 77)
England get a small respite this over as they creep up to 130. They have got a lot of work to do from this point but have two players in who can up the ante. Survival may be the aim of the game at the moment, though.

    11/26/2014 3:54:19 PM
  • Over 21 – England 134-4 (Buttler 5, Moeen 78)
England were struck by Mendis last time out so play him more cautiously here. Another four runs are collected as the tourists try to keep their head.

    11/26/2014 4:01:48 PM
  • Over 22 – England 143-4 (Moeen 78, Buttler 14)
All the way! Buttler hits Perera – who was probing away nicely – deep over the long-off rope with fantastic hand speed. Timing, power – that shot had the lot. Buttler paddles a short ball to leg to keep the strike.
    11/26/2014 4:02:18 PM
  • Over 23 – England 155-4 (Moeen 84, Buttler 17)
Mendis charitably donates three of England’s haul of wides back by firing a rank ball down the leg-side, giving Sangakkara no chance after Buttler has paddled the first ball of the over for two. Denied of the strike for a little bit, Moeen makes the most of his opportunity by striking Mendis high and handsome over the large midwicket boundary for six.
    11/26/2014 4:02:33 PM

  • Buttler holds his pose after walloping Perera for a maximum.
    11/26/2014 4:03:01 PM
  • [wicket] Buttler b Prasad 21. England 159-5
What a blow for the tourists – Buttler, trying to run the ball down to third man, merely gets an inside edge onto leg stump.
    11/26/2014 4:06:17 PM
  • Over 24 – England 159-5 (Moeen 84, Bopara 0)
Moeen Ali – backing up quite a distance by the way – is a spectator as another wicket tumbles. For a moment it looked as though Buttler might get a break and the ball might bounce over the stumps, but the skipper must have used up most of the luck. Bopara is solid in defence to his first ball and his efforts to pinch a single off the final ball of the over are quickly thwarted.

    11/26/2014 4:10:53 PM
  • Over 25 – England 162-5 (Moeen 86, Bopara 1)
Moeen  can probably feel a 100 in the distance but the order of the day at present is to keep things tight. England can take few risks here having lost half their wickets.

    11/26/2014 4:16:34 PM
  • Over 26 – England 175-5 (Moeen 98, Bopara 2)
Moeen is dropped for the second time in his innings and profits by smashing Herath into the stands for six. The opener is closing in on a ton. He’s now just two away.

  • And there it is - a fantastic hundred for Moeen Ali, the third fastest for England in ODIs! #SLvEng http://pbs.twimg.com/media/B3YXGoHIAAAdluS.jpg

  • [nickknight] He looks in complete control – what a six months he’s having. A Test match hundred, now a one-day hundred. Can he go on? England need just over a run a ball from here. What an eye-catching innings from Moeen Ali. So good against the seam and so good against the spin – that’s what has made the innings so special.

    11/26/2014 4:25:12 PM
  • Over 27 – England 178-5 (Moeen 100, Bopara 3)
There it is! Moeen reaches three figures for the first time in ODI cricket. A quite fantastic innings which has so far featured 10 fours and four sixes. The selectors can take credit, too, having preferred him to Alex Hales.
    11/26/2014 4:25:57 PM
  • Over 28 – England 186-5 (Moeen 106, Bopara 5)
Moeen keeps on finding the fence, this time a four is plundered from Dilshan. His century was the third fastest by an Englishman in ODI cricket and came off 72 balls.

    11/26/2014 4:28:26 PM
  • 11/26/2014 4:30:16 PM
  • Over 29 – England 190-5 (Moeen 108, Bopara 7)
The luck is back with England - Bopara is almost bowled around his legs by the first ball of Dilshan's over and then Moeen spoons one straight over the bowler’s head into an acre of space.
    11/26/2014 4:31:28 PM

  • England are ahead of where Sri Lanka were after 30 overs but will the three extra wickets they have lost prove the difference?

    11/26/2014 4:33:02 PM
  • Over 30 – England 193-5 (Moeen 110, Bopara 8)
Shouts of catch it from Sri Lanka but there was no chance of catching a firm drive down the ground for one by Moeen.
    11/26/2014 4:35:32 PM
  • [wicket] Moeen Ali c & b Mendis 119. Eng 203-6
A memorable innings comes to a close as Moeen Ali pushes a simple return chance back down the pitch.
    11/26/2014 4:38:54 PM
  • Over 31 – England 203-6 (Bopara 9)
Is that the match right there - a crucial breakthrough for Sri Lanka as Moeen departs shaking his head in disbelief.
    11/26/2014 4:41:43 PM
  • Over 32 – England 207-6 (Bopara 11, Stokes 1)
Bopara and Stokes are now charged with pushing England to what looks like a highly unlikely victory. Bopara nearly departed, though, paddling one towards Sangakkara but fortunately for the Essex batter, the ball hits the keeper's legs, not the back his gloves.

    11/26/2014 4:44:07 PM
  • Over 33 – England 210-6 (Bopara 13, Stokes 2)
Bopara and Stokes keep the board ticking over as they try to steady the ship but you can feel the pressure building given the number of wickets lost.

    11/26/2014 4:45:29 PM
  • Over 34 – England 213-6 (Bopara 15, Stokes 3)
Time is still very much on England’s side but these two have got to play sensibly – get the team within touching distance and then have a right go at the end. Dilshan throws himself to his left to save some precious runs – Sri Lanka’s ground fielding has been for the large part very good.
    11/26/2014 4:47:30 PM
  • Over 35 – England 219-6 (Bopara 19, Stokes 5)
A nice touch of backspin as Bopara sweeps aerially to deep square leg – the ball pitching and rolling a safe distance from the boundary rider. Stokes almost lifts himself off his feet aiming an expansive drive, missing the ball entirely, as the runs continue to come slow but steady.
    11/26/2014 4:50:12 PM
  • [davidlloyd] England have got time. Bopara has got a nice little start but it is pretty important for these two at the crease to say: 'Let's stick around for at least another 10 overs'."
    11/26/2014 4:50:23 PM
  • Over 36 – England 223-6 (Bopara 21, Stokes 7)
The powerplay is taken and the gaps close up a little – Stokes working the first ball from Herath to leg for one. Bopara half-connects with a sweep and picks up two for his troubles. Buttler is backing up a distance – but is in his crease at the point of delivery.
    11/26/2014 4:54:09 PM
  • Nick Knight is refusing to write England off - but what you think? @skycricket #SLvENG
    [nickknight] It's on - just."
    11/26/2014 4:55:24 PM
  • Over 37 – England 228-6 (Bopara 24, Stokes 9)
Mendis continues, which is no surprise, with Stokes struggling to get the ball away – a pull for one brings a little light relief and rotates the strike, Bopara helping himself to a single down the ground. A couple off the final ball means that’s five off the over – England now need 90 off 78 balls.

  • Over 38 – England 236-6 (Bopara 31, Stokes 11)
Sri Lanka stick with the spin of Herath and Bopara – alive to the rising run-rate - eases the pressure with a sweet strike over wide long-on, using his feet nicely to get to the pitch. A full, quick delivery beats Stokes outside off as he attempts to sweep to leg. He tries the same shot to the final ball of the over – which is outside leg - with greater success for a single.

    As we stand...
    11/26/2014 5:02:15 PM
  • Over 39 – England 241-6 (Bopara 32, Stokes 14)
With runs tight Bopara chances his arm and takes a tight single – a direct hit from Jayawardene would have done for him – and the Essex man takes a painful blow on the back of his leg for his troubles. A brilliant diving stop by Kusal in the deep denies Stokes a much-needed boundary from a reverse sweep.
    11/26/2014 5:04:42 PM
  • [wicket] Stokes st Sangakkara b Herath 16 Eng 243-7
Stokes swipes his bat in frustration after coming down the track and being stumped by a distance.
    11/26/2014 5:07:47 PM
  • Over 40 – England 243-7 (Bopara 32, Woakes 0)
You sensed that wicket was coming – Stokes was nearly bowled around his legs, then was denied a boundary in the deep. Herath fired the next ball in and the batsman did a neat job of yorking himself.
    11/26/2014 5:10:12 PM
  • Over 41 – England 251-7 (Bopara 38, Woakes 2)
Mendis continues to wheel away. Good work in the deep restricts Bopara to a single down the ground off the first ball so it’s a case of ‘over to you’ Mr Woakes, who gets off the mark second ball in similar fashion. Midwicket stands no chance as Bopara sweeps low and hard throw midwicket for four – the first boundary for 20 balls and 14 minutes. Mendis sends down another short ball but this time Bopara misses out, picking out the fielder on the rope, and Woakes can do no better as Mendis ends the over with a woefully short ball.
