Formerly a defensive player, Watson has revolutionised her game under Argentinian coach Diego Veronelli and is confident she can comfortably surpass the career-high ranking of 39 she set last year. She is only six places adrift of that and has very few ranking points to defend having failed to win a tour-level match over the closing months of last season.

    8/26/2014 3:40:01 PM
[break] WATSON 1-6 0-1* CIRSTEA: Watson, ranked 46, is feeling the pressure and is over-hitting her groundstrokes from the back of the court. She nets her backhand for an early break in the second set.
    8/26/2014 3:41:44 PM
[stats] Cirstea won 55% of her first serves and hit 14 winners. Meanwhile, Watson made eight unforced errors and three double faults during that opening set.
    8/26/2014 3:43:22 PM
[break] WATSON 1-6 *1-1 CIRSTEA: At 30-30, the net cord goes the way of Watson, who earns her first break point of the match. And she takes it after forcing Cirstea into an error on her backhand side. Game on!
    8/26/2014 3:46:06 PM
[break] WATSON 1-6 1-2* CIRSTEA: Watson double faults for the fourth time in the match before thundering her return high and wide. She the nets her backhand to gift the Romanian a triple break point. Another costly double hands Cirstea the break. Oh dear!
    8/26/2014 3:49:30 PM
WATSON 1-6 *1-3 CIRSTEA: Last year Watson arrived in New York low on confidence and still struggling to regain health and fitness after a bout of glandular fever. She lost to Daniela Hantuchova in the first major of the year in Australia, Simona Halep at the French Open and Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon - some big name players. The 22-year-old seems to be suffering with confidence on Court 13 as the Romanian holds to 15 to move clear now.
    8/26/2014 3:53:33 PM
[break] WATSON 1-6 1-4* CIRSTEA: Watson recovers from a sixth double fault of the match to move 40-30 ahead on serve, but a wild forehand lands long. The British No 1 is broken again after netting a straightforward backhand. It'll take something special from Watson if she is to win this now!
    8/26/2014 3:59:23 PM
WATSON 1-6 *1-5 CIRSTEA: Comfortable hold to 15 for the Romanian express train that is Sorana Cirstea on Court 13. She's just one game away from a place in the second-round.

Borna Coricthe 17-year-old world No 204 who was junior champion in 2013, also made a stunning grand slam debut with a convincing 6-4 6-1 6-2 win over 29th-seeded Czech Lukas Rosol, the man who dumped Rafael Nadal out of Wimbledon two years ago. The upset put Coric into a second-round clash with history-making Victor Estrella Burgos, the Dominican Republic's first grand slam participant, who is making his US Open debut at the age of 34.

It's an amazing feeling," said qualifier Coric, who arrived in New York with the goal of making it into the main draw. "I said to myself, 'If I achieve that, that's going to be perfect'."

    MASSIVE DISAPPOINTMENT FOR AGGIE
Aggie Radwanska has been speaking about her defeat to China's Peng Shuai.
The Pole has reached at least the quarter-finals at every other grand slam but has not made it past the fourth round here.

It always is disappointing (to go out), especially in the first week of a grand slam. But I think here it's not really a new thing for me unfortunately. I really want to know the answer. Then maybe I will find a way to play better here and just try another way to be in the second week. There is just something here that I can't really pass those rounds. I have couple of years to try. Hopefully one day I will do it."
