[break] Tsonga decides to change his tactics and come to the net to take on Murray. He makes an easy smash to level at 30-30, but then the world No 9 drives his opponent out wide before making a smash of his own. At deuce, the Frenchman earns a break point opportunity thanks to a spectacular backhand down the line. And a tame drop shot from the Scot falls well short!

  • MURRAY 7-5 2-3* TSONGA

  • 9/1/2014 7:47:09 PM
  • MURRAY 7-5 *2-4 TSONGA
Murray produced a quite sensational lob to bring the latest game to 30-30. Tsonga double faults for the second time in the match to hand Murray a break back chance! Another attempted lob lands harmlessly into the alley this time though. The Scot is at the net in a shot to make a crosscourt volley and earn a second break back point opportunity, but he nets from the baseline. An 214 km/h ace followed by an unreturnable serve hands the Frenchman the hold and that's an opportunity gone for the 2013 Wimbledon champion.

  • MURRAY 7-5 3-4* TSONGA
The Frenchman revealed ahead of the clash that there was no longer the same fear factor about Murray in the locker room, and he also sensed there was not the same power in Murray's serve and groundstrokes. He was proven wrong in that first set, but he's show little fear in this set up to now. A beautiful crosscourt drop shot from Murray keeps him in contention in this set with a hold to 30.

  • MURRAY 7-5 *4-4 TSONGA
[break] Murray has not beaten a top-10 player since last year's Wimbledon final, but he's playing close to the top of his game today against his junior rival. At 30-30 the Scot's return lands long. Tsonga's forehand then misses the baseline and we're quickly at deuce. Murray fails to angle his backhand, but is quickly at the net to flash his backhand away for a winner. The 29-year-old then fires his forehand into the alley to hand Murray a break point chance, but a 125 mph ace gets him out of trouble - his sixth ace of the match. Murray fizzes a double handed backhand away to earn a second break point opportunity and this time he takes it by dragging a forehand winner into the open court - just brilliant!

Tsonga scrambles from the back of the court to keep the point alive, but then Murray goes crosscourt for the winner. At 30-15, the net cord goes the way of the Frenchman. The British No 1 is at full stretch to lay his strings on the crosscourt backhand. A wild forehand is long, so Murray holds. He's a relieved man!

  • MURRAY 7-5 7-5 *0-0 TSONGA
[set] Murray looks to put Tsonga under pressure in this crucial service game for the ninth seed from France. He fires his forehand long - 15-30, but a first serve at 128 mph out wide is too powerful for Murray. The Toronto Masters champion makes the smash, despite some amazing scrambling from his opponent. Murray makes an amazing double handed backhand return winner with the ball dipping in at the last. A stunning backhand from Tsonga hands him the advantage, but back comes the Scot with another flashing forehand winner. He earns a set point after an error from his opponent and another error gifts Murray a two sets to love lead.

Murray certainly looks more comfortable back on Arthur Ashe Stadium and away from Louis Armstrong, where he dropped sets against both Robin Haase and Andrey Kuznetsov. He'll need to break the Tsonga serve for the fourth time today if he wants to win this in straight sets though. Tsonga holds serve comfortably.
