    BAD DAY FOR ANA
Ana Ivanovic, who had been having her best season since winning the French Open in 2008, lost to Karolina Pliskova 7-5 6-4 in the second round today and after her match she said:

It was just really bad day. This is exactly what I think I have to reassess. I had great lead-ups to every grand slam. I played a lot of matches and won lot of matches. ... At the grand slams I just haven't performed that well. "

    8/28/2014 6:34:42 PM
    WINNING STREAK
[stats] Serena Williams is now on a 15-match Flushing Meadows winning streak after her win today. Williams has won five US Open titles, including in 2012 and 2013. DJOKO IN THE GROOVE
World No 1 Novak Djokovic barely worked up a good sweat on another sizzling day as he strolled past Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-1 6-3 6-0 and into the third round of the year's final grand slam.

"I have nothing to complain about, I wanted to get my job done as quick as possible," said Djokovic. "I don't feel like I need to play long matches to get into the groove. I mean, I feel that I'm hitting the ball very well. Second match even better than the first one. Under the circumstances I think I came up with a very good performance. Stayed mentally tough and did not allow myself to get frustrated because of the wind and conditions that were obviously very tough for both of us."

    8/28/2014 10:01:09 PM
    ALMOST TIME  ...
Andy Murray will hope to avoid any drama when he meets little-known German qualifier Matthias Bachinger in the second round at midnight UK time tonight. After the cramp that so badly affected him against Robin Haase on Monday, Murray will no doubt be happy to be playing in the relative cool of the night session in New York.

I feel like I'm playing pretty good tennis and hopefully results will be not too far behind."

He has never played Bachinger before in a professional match, although their paths crossed in the junior ranks. The German world No 235 only found out he had got into qualifying last Monday when he was back home in Munich but won three matches in three days after flying to New York and then beat Radek Stepanek for his first ever grand slam main draw victory. Bachinger, who lost to Britain's James Ward in qualifying here last year, has not dropped more than three games in any set so far.

    SOME EXCITED MURRAY FANS ...

    8/28/2014 10:26:21 PM
    INTRODUCING BACHINGER
Murray's opponent tonight is vastly inexperienced at the grand slam level, having only ever won one main draw match, in the first round against Radek Stepanek here at this year's US Open. His most notable career achievements include three tournament wins on the Challenger circuit and two semi-finals in ATP 250 tournaments. He was a fairly handy junior, however, and even beat Murray before they had both turned professional.

    8/28/2014 10:48:47 PM
    MURRAY FAVOURITE
[betting]Bachinger's outsider status is reinforced by the betting odds ahead of tonight's clash. The German is available at 6/1 with Sky Bet. who have massive favourite Murray priced at 1/2 to win in straight sets. If you fancy a flutter on some better value Murray bets, such as the correct set score or the sequence of set winners, then head over to Sky Bet.
    8/28/2014 10:55:06 PM
    CALM CONDITIONS
The build up to Murray's match has started on Sky Sports 3 HD and Boris Becker, having put on a jacket for the evening session after another sun-drenched afternoon, does not think the wind will be a major factor in the contest.
The wind has died down a little bit, it's not as swirling as it was this afternoon, which should benefit both players. It's a really pleasant night to play tennis.

    8/28/2014 11:03:37 PM
    READY FOR THE BIG STAGE
Annabel Croft believes the fact the evening session crowd is taking a long time to file into Arthur Ashe Stadium may play into the hands of the inexperienced Bachinger.
The question mark is how he's going to cope with coming out here and being on a big stadium court and having a crack at a former champion in Andy Murray. They do know each other, they've known each other since the juniors. It depends how he comes out - at the moment it's not that full out here and that may help Bachinger.

    8/28/2014 11:07:13 PM
    CRAMP IN THE PAST?
Murray had a cramping crisis in his first round match with Robin Haase but managed to make it through and Boris does not think it will have produced any lasting problems.
He's had more than 48 hours to recover. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in the first team meeting after that match to see (them discuss) the reasoning behind what was almost a physical breakdown. But I saw him in the locker room before, he looked fit and ready to go so I don't think there are any affects from Monday's match.

    8/28/2014 11:11:23 PM
    ALMOST READY
The two players are now out on the court and have commenced the knock-up. Both looked relaxed heading out onto Arthur Ashe Stadium, with Bachinger saying his main goal is to enjoy the occasion and the "big atmosphere".

Andy Murray is ready to face Matthias Bachinger at midnight

    8/28/2014 11:32:44 PM
    8/29/2014 8:45:06 AM
Hopefully the next match on Arthur Ashe will be more competitive than the Jankovic-Larsson opener. Former champion Venus Williams is up against Sara Errani, who is seeded 13th compared to Venus' 19th. Williams has won all three previous meetings without dropping a set but the most recent of those was in 2012.

    DJOKOVIC'S 'DANCE' MOVES
    8/29/2014 4:45:32 PM
[set]Monfils moves two sets up against Gonzalez, 7-5 6-3, and is now well on course for a third-round meeting with either French compatriot Richard Gasquet or Italy's Paolo Lorenzi. Monfils' best run at the US Open was a quarter-final appearance in 2010. Cilic, the 14th seed, is also two sets up on Marchenko, 7-6 6-2. But Janowicz and Anderson - who are both 6ft 8 in - are level at one-set all after the South African took the second set 6-2 in 33 minutes. Janowicz is still yet to hit an ace, while Anderson has sent down eight of them.
    8/29/2014 4:53:59 PM
[break]Seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov's second-round match against Dudi Sela is under way on Louis Armstrong. Dimitrov is an early break up, leading 3-0 in the opening set.

    [game-set-match]MONFILS BEATS GONZALEZ 7-5 6-3 6-2
Monfils came on strong after a slow start in the opening set and, in the end, ran out a comfortable straight-sets winner against Gonzalez in two hours and seven minutes. The French crowd pleaser could take on compatriot Richard Gasquet in the third round, if 12th seed Gasquet can see off Paolo Lorenzi later today.
    8/29/2014 5:23:51 PM
[break]Errani has made a storming start against Venus on Arthur Ashe. The Italian is a double break up, leading 3-0 in the opening set.
